Helps for the Children Jesus Makes a Choice Luke 4:1-15 MEMORY VERSE: "Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God and Him only shalt thou serve" (Luke 4:8b). The Lord Jesus, God’s only Son, was sinless, but there were times when He had to make a choice between right and wrong. One of these times was immedi ately after He was baptized by John in the Jordan River. Forty days the devil tempted God’s Son to sin. During that time Jesus did not eat. After forty days, Satan knew how hungry Jesus was and suggested that He take some round, smooth stones lying on the ground and make them into little biscuits or loaves of bread. The Lord Jesus did not argue with Satan; He quoted a verse from God’s Word to him. Three times Satan tried to cause the Saviour to sin by disobeying God. Each time the Saviour answered Satan with a verse from the Bible. At last Satan began quoting Scripture to Jesus. He did not quote the verses cor rectly. After the temptations were over, the Son of God returned into Galilee and be gan to teach the people concerning God and His plan for them. Every false religion today uses Scrip ture to prove its sinful teachings. The followers of these false religions quote only a part of a verse to try to prove something that God’s Word does not really say. Each day we must make a choice between right and wrong, even in what others quote as being a part of God’s Word.

When others tempt you to sin, quote God’s Word, for it is the Sword with which God’s children fight Satan and his workers. Oct. 30, 1955 The Mission of the Master Today’s lesson takes us into the experi ence of our Lord as He goes back to His home town after His entrance into His public ministry and His wilderness testing. Some remarkable and practical things take place upon this occasion. A Notable Custom (v. 16) Jesus had the habit of attending the house of God on the Sabbath Day. There is a custom here which all of His follow ers ought to emulate. The day of the week has been changed because of the Lord’s resurrection, but the principle is the same. Teachers may well emphasize the importance of faithfully attending the house of God for worship and instruction in the Word of God. See Heb. 10:25. Failure at this point is to be one of the signs of the end time. Remember the illustration of the coal of fire which turns grey and cold when taken from the bed of coals. So with those who neglect the fellowship of God’s house. A Significant Reading (vv. 17-21) Doubtless in response to an invitation CONTINUED Luke 4:16-24, 28-30 Pointers on the Lesson
