Explore worlds of wonder with Dominik Parisien

a sort of Victorian-era setup and yet science has still managed some of the achievements of the 20th and 21st centuries, such as com- puters, robots, and even a limited form of space travel based on Newtonian physics and mechanics rather than modern astro- physics, cybernetics, and nuclear energy. Imagine if Thomas Edison or Nikolas Tesla had worked together on a real rocket to the moon project based on Jules Verne’s “super cannon” premise in his novel, From the Earth to the Moon . One thing Parisien noticed that makes Clockwork Canada stand out from other offerings in the steampunk genre is a fascina- tionmany of its contributors have with cultu- ral and ethnic values. It separates Canadian steampunk from the American and British

varieties where there is less attention paid to the social background of the story. “A lot of the stories were considering a lot of themore problematic aspects of Canadian history,” Parisien said. “A lot of the stories were from the point of view of people and groups we didn’t often see in steampunk.” When not working on either an anthology project or his own fiction, Parisien enjoys most of all spending time with his partner, Kelsi Morris. “What we love as work is also a hobby for us,” Parisien said, smiling. “We watch movies, we read books, and we talk about what we’ve seen and read.” For Parisien the fun is always in the jour- ney, exploring new worlds of wonder. “These stories really do resonate.”

Final announcement of the Sunburst Awards is not until this autumn, so Pari- sien is relaxing a little bit before hitting the promotion trail for Clockwork Canada and also getting down to work on his next antho- logy editorial project. While he has several SF and fantasy stories of his own in print in various anthologies, Parisien smiles when he says that he has more fun as an editor, shepherding together a collection of writers and their tales of wonders. “My forte really is the editing side,” he said. “I love getting people to tell their stories and also providing them with a venue for those stories. My absolute love is helping to shape the work of others.” The Clockwork Canada anthology is one of the most Canadian SF projects Parisien has ever been involved with since he began pursuing the editorial side of his love for speculative fiction. The overall theme of the anthology is Canada, its history, culture, and place in the world at large, as seen through the ratchets and gears of the steampunk genre. Steampunk is one of the recent spinoff subgenres of SF. It is a variation of another SF subgenre: alternate history. With steam- punk, the premise is that society is stuck in

Dominik Parisien loves telling a good story. He loves listening or reading good storytelling even more when the stories excite the imagination with trips Beyond the FieldsWe Know or explore strange new Worlds of If. “I love storytelling,” Parisien explained during a visit back home to Rockland to spend some time with his family and also drop in at his almamater, L’Escale, and share some advice and anecdotes about his expe- riences both as a writer of speculative fiction and as an editor. Parisien is the editorial mind behind se- veral very successful anthologies for science fiction and fantasy on the bookshelves in Canada and the United States. His latest effort, Clockwork Canada , is already getting international attention and recognition for its Canadian take on the steampunk genre of science fiction. The book is among the nominees for a Sunburst Award for best anthology, a very prestigious literary prize in both the Canadian and international SF community.
