Become & Behold - Empowering participation through local identity Project: International youth exchange

Project: Escape room game

Country: Germany

Countries: Participants from Belarus, Germany and Latvia

Organisation: In Via Köln e.V / Eurodesk Cologne

Organisations: Ob’shchestvennoe ob’edinenie “Ecodom” (Belarus), Naturfreundejugend Nieder- sachsen (Germany), Deundejugen Zadini (Latvia)

Description: Eurodesk Cologne has designed a workshop concept on the topic of climate and mobility opportunities for young people that is offered for free to local schools and youth clubs. In solving the escape room game, students learn about climate change, plastic, fishing and their impact on our oceans. By dealing with global issues, students’ interest in foreign coun- tries is awakened. For this reason, Eurodesk Cologne also provides information about various programmes such as au pair schemes, volunteering opportunities, internships, work & travel and public funding opportunities. Depending on the group, the impact of travelling on the climate is also discussed.

Description: Global thinking - local action: The international youth exchange illuminated this motto with young people and actively used it to help achieve climate policy goals. Furthermore, the exchange wanted to help young people from different cultures to become aware of their own political voice and explore the effectiveness of their own actions. The group collectively worked out what a green, diverse Europe can look like.

Project: Franco-German exchange programme for children

Project: International youth exchange

Countries: France, Germany

Countries: Participants from Armenia, Georgia, Germany, Italy, Poland and Ukraine

Organisations: Association Emma Laboratoire Culturel (France); Kalkhorster Kinderkram e.V. (Germany)

Organisations: Today Art Initiative (Armenia); Student youth council (Georgia); PEWOBE gemein - nützige soziale Betreuungsgesellschaft (Germany); Associazione Culturale di Promozione Sociale Gentle Giant (Italy); Fundacja Sempre a Frente (Poland); civic organisation “Development and Initiative” (Ukraine) Description: The international youth exchange brought together young people and youth workers from Germany, Georgia, Poland, Italy, Ukraine and Armenia to discuss environmental problems. In group works, role play sessions, simulation games, brainstorming, team building games, workshops, debates, presentations and a theatre forum, the young people discussed and learned about, e.g., environmental protection, recycling and preventing pollution. During the project, the 30 participants had the chance to set up working groups and present ideas for future projects. To succeed in combating environmental problems and engage in the above-mentioned activities, participants created agendas and planned the activities they wanted to implement in their countries.

Description: The central theme of the international exchange programme was the joint devel- opment of a circus and theatre performance in daily workshops. By exploring different forms of artistic expression and throughout the entire process, the children were allowed as much participation as possible. Another goal of the exchange programme was to address other issues, such as the finite nature of resources, sustainable resource use, the importance of democratic processes, and gender equality. The topic of environmental protection was actively introduced by the children themselves and became a central theme of the performance. The value of demo- cratic processes for a harmonious community, in which everyone regardless of their abilities and needs is heard and respected, was demonstrated practically by living it together. The menu was dominated by vegetarian food, leading to conversations about a more sustainable lifestyle. The children, almost all of them from villages, were naturally interested in avoiding food waste.
