Balwearie High School: Innovative and Entrepreneurial Solutions to Climate Change Project: Strategic partnership on “Innovative and Entrepreneurial Solutions to Climate Change”
Description: 40 pupils from the UK and Germany got the chance to go behind the scenes of the fashion industry and explore what the future of textiles could look like. Across five days in Scot - land in October 2022, participants took part in a range of workshops covering handcraft skills, sustainable practice and cultural exchange.
Countries: Finland, Germany, Scotland
Funded by: UK-German Connection
Organisations: Students from schools in the participating countries (aged 12-15)
Contact information: E-mail: youthseminar@ukgermanconnection.org
Description: This project, highly relevant to current concerns over climate change and sustain - ability, involved students creating novel and entrepreneurial ways to tackle these issues, for instance conducting surveys, completing scientific research projects and studying national and EU policies promoting sustainable and renewable energy solutions. As well as increasing pupils and staff’s knowledge on the effects of pollution and global warming on the environment, the project gave pupils the skills they would need to follow their education and career paths. All participating pupils were granted the John Muir award through achieving the four challenges: discover a wild place, explore it, conserve it, and share the experience. Staff also benefitted, developing innovative approaches to teaching and learning and sharing pedagogy across different educational regions within Europe.

Countries: Cyprus, Latvia, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Türkiye, UK
Project: Workshop in schools
Description: “Ego vs eco” was a multicultural youth exchange that ran between 14 and 25 September 2021 in Funchal (Madeira). The initiative and idea originated with young proac - tive people who wanted to emphasise the importance of worldwide pollution issues and develop pro-environmental behaviour amongst their peers to reduce harmful actions both in their community and globally. Participants learned from each other and from mother nature, explored global environment threats, engaged with locals, and brought this knowledge back to their communities.
Countries: Brazil, UK
Organisations: Private individuals: Emma Espley, Adriana Meirelles
Description: The overall aim of the workshop is to provide an opportunity for pupils to use tech- nology to explore the Amazon rainforest and learn about the natural and human patterns and processes at work there, and explore some of the issues that arise in such a large geographical area. This project consists of a full-day workshop for primary school students, which not only explores the geography of the Amazon region, but also integrates critical thinking, themes such as sustainability and consumerism, creativity (through the medium of natural art and animation) and regular, direct contact with an indigenous community in Brazil.
