Dr. Harry Ironside pointed out, "The most frequent name or title that Jesus gave to Himself was that of Son of Man. In the gospels He so speaks of Himself 78 different times. The expression occurs frequently in the Old Testament such as in Palm 8." We can be reasonably certain that Jesus was not express ing only His oneness with human ity or even His mortality. He was saying that He was the One for whom God had appointed great power and tremendous glory. He was to overcome the powers of this world. Jesus Christ told the high priest, "Hereafter shall ye see the Son of Man sitting on the right hand of power and coming in the clouds of heaven" (Matthew 26: 64). It is clear that the Son of Man and the Son of God are united in the same Person. Jesus asked Peter, "Whom do men say that I the Son of Man am?" (Matthew 16:13-17). Peter answered that He was the Christ, the Son of the living God. Because of this Jesus blessed him for his utterance, telling him that it had come to him only by divine revel ation. Jesus Christ very clearly cre ated the impression, especially in Page 37
about Jesus is that which He had concerning Himself. While Paul rightly considered Him as God the everlasting Son, we trace thé Sav iour's own teaching about Hjs pur pose and program on this earth. He repeatedly referred to His in volvement in the past. As He spoke to the woman at the well of Jacob she reasoned, "I know that the Messiah is coming and that He will tell us all things." The Saviour re sponded, "I that speak unto thee am He" (John 4:25, 26). What a tremendous declaration! The Gospels readily portray Him as the One who was painted in the Old Testament. The prophetic pre dictions were absolutely fulfilled. Isaiah, as an example, pointed out that the Redeemer would preach the gospel to the poor, heal the broken-hearted, preach deliver ance to the captives, give sight to the blind, set at liberty those who are bruised and to preach the ac ceptable year of the Lord (Luke 4:18, 19). Certainly Jesus did not think of Himself as just another man who had been sent into the world. He knew He was the One whose coming had been absolute ly foretold.
