ROCKLAND | They’re collecting leaves over at École Carrefour Jeunesse. Lots and lots and lots of leaves, along with anything else that can make good garden mulch. The senior classes at École Carrefour Jeunesse and Rockland Public School are working together on a joint ecological gar- dening project. During the past few weeks the students at both schools have been gathering up all the leaves that fell or were blown into their school yards. They’ve also salvaged close to a dozen “used” pumpkins that had their brief evening of glory as Hal- loween jack-o-lanterns before being rel- egated to the garbage if they had escaped getting smashed the morning after Oct. 31. The students are creating, under the direction of volunteer supervisors Sonia Lavoie and Paul Davies, a compost collec- tive for their schools using the leaves and the pumpkins and any other clean organic items available like leftover vegetables or fruits that won’t attract any scavenging ani- mals while they rot under cover of a tarpau- lin. Right now the students have more than four dozen bags of leaves collected along with the pumpkins. The local Wal-Mart and Canadian Tire outlets donated the bags for the project. When the compost has “cooked” over the winter, the resulting mulch will be spread over parts of the two schools for future gar- dens as part of student-led beautification projects for the two neighbouring schools. The students also welcome anyone with bags of leaves to contribute to the com- posting project. There is a marked drop-off site at the end of Giroux Street where the two schools abut each other. Only compostable leaves are accepted at the drop-off. Students ask that people re- spect their project and not dump any other garbage at the site. P-R Trail calendar It proved such a popular item last year that the Prescott-Russell Recreational Trail Calendar makes a comeback this year. The 2014 edition of the calendar, featuring sce- nic shots from the photography students of The Barnyard Studio, is now available. The Rockland art group initiated the annual calendar project in cooperation with the Prescott-Russell Recreational Trail Commit- tee and others to promote the walking/cy- cling trail and all of its related activities. Tenders must be submitted in the prescribed form and must be accompanied by a deposit in the form of a money order or of a bank draft or cheque certified by a bank or trust corporation payable to the municipality and representing at least 20 per cent of the tender amount. Except as follows, the municipality makes no representation regarding the title to or any other matters relating to the land to be sold. Responsibility for ascertaining these matters rests with the potential purchasers. This sale is governed by the Municipal Act, 2001 and the Municipal Tax Sales Rules made under that Act. The successful purchaser will be required to pay the amount tendered plus accumulated taxes and the relevant land transfer tax.
The municipality has no obligation to provide vacant possession to the successful purchaser.
