“Wherefore, as the Holy Ghost saith” (ch. 3:7). “The Holy Ghost this signify ing (ch. 9:8). The Holy Ghost is a wit- ness to os” (ch. 10:15). In these three brief, and as it were incidental, expres sions will be seen the three essentials of authorship. An author must first have something to say or to write; he must then signify (manifest) his meaning; and he must further testify or bear his wit ness to the truth of what he writes. And is it not intensely beautiful and ap propriate that this autograph signature of the Holy Ghost should occur in the Epis tle to the Hebrews? The whole Epistle is written to glorify the Person of the Lord Jesus Christ; to declare His Eternal Sonship and Godhead; and to set forth His glory as the great High Priest of His Church. The effulgence (ch. 1:3) of the Father’s glory and the lowliness of the Son of Man herein manifestly meet in the Person of Jesus. He who created the angels, and is worshipped' by them, is made “a little .lower than the angels for the suffering of death.” It would almost appear that the Holy Spirit intentionally forbade the human penman to affix his name, that nothing might for a moment obscure the glory of Jesus! And is not this exactly what the Holy Ghost does today and daily in the hearts of His people? He first speaks of Jesus; He then signifies, manifests, makes real His glory as Emmanuel; and He further testifies 'o r bears witness to the efficacy of His one all-sufficient sacrifice. This con stitutes His heavenly seal and signature in the soul. Have we not here idh' excellent exam ple for every dear servant of God? Would it not be in complete harmony with the mind of the Holy Spirit to “speak, signify, and testify” of Jesus; and to be willing for our poor names to fade into utter nothingness in the presence of His matchless glory and beauty? — o— Comforted to Comfort Said Dr. Jowett: “We are comforted in order that we might be comforters. We are to take His tenderness and touch the sorrows of others as He touched ours. Within a few hours after Mrs. Gladstone had lost her husband she was in the home of a poor miner, comforting a widow whose husband-had just been killed in the mine. Comforted to comfort! And what need there is of comforters today! Let us study God’s dealings with us, that in the power of His grace we may be skillful in the comfort of others.” —o— The Holy Land Of the stories told of Dr. Joseph Par ker there is none more beautiful than that of Dr. W. J. Dawson’s visit to him in his garden. His visitor told him of an in tended visit to the Holy Land. Dr. Par ker waved his hand to the blue sky above him. “My holy land,” he said, “is there.”
