unwoven light, broken up by passing through Nature’s tears, but there are to be no tears in heaven. The color of that rain bow is emerald—the emblem of faithfulness ( “who is like . . . . to .thy faithfulness round about thee” ?)—JEHOVAH->'is not only a covenant-making, but a covenant-keeping God. Moreover it is the tint of the bursting spring: its promise is the pledge of a new life. And, last of all, it is round about the throne. It does not typify the covenant and prorhise of impotence, but of Omnipotence; what He undertakes He not only will, but can per form. We must not forget, however, that this fact of the King- ship of the Promiser lays upon us the responsibilities of loyalty. The rainbow_ has no message for the rebel or the persistently disobedient. SOME confusion of thought is likely to arise in our minds in consequence of our.diets of worship being called “Divine Ser vice.” Worship is not service. A master is not satisfied that his servant should praise him, pr sing to him, or beg of him, or hear about him—he desires that, he should serve him,, i.e., do his will and execute his commands. So we, if we be the Lord’s servants; must engage in His active service day by.day; \Ve must fulfil His Word; we must go upon His errands; we must seek to promote His interests; we must conform ourselves to His will. We wor ship God in the Sanctuary, but the place for service is the home, the marketplace, the street, the playground, the Senate,«the, office, the drawingroom, the kitchen—in a word, whatsoever locality we may visit or occupy, in the course of. our daily, life. For, be it noted, the service required of us is not merely ‘‘sacred,J|;but sec ular. The Lord’s servant is never off duty; he is never upon holi day as regards his Master’s calling. That calling does not concern a part, but the whole of his life; so that who does his daily work with sloven hands, or careless mind, or apathetic heart, is wasting, not his own time and talents, but His Lord’s. No Sabbath magnificat can compensate for that. HP I . m A pril 3. “My servant Caleb.’’—Numbers 14:24: ■ CALEB was the only type of God’s faithful people who went up from Egypt into the Promised Land: (Joshua was a type of Christ). His name signifies “a dog.” It is a striking coinci dence that the N ew T e s t a m e n t w o r d for •worship in its root significance means-“to act like a dog.” Doglikeness, then, is the characteristic of faithfulness and of worship. There are dogs whom no one dan safely touch, but their masters may pull their ears and their tails and put? their fingers- into their mouths without a1reproving growl. The commands of a stranger they will not heed, and his voice they will not follow, but they will do all that their owner bids them, and will go at his call to the furthest ends of the earth. In a palace among aliens they are miserable; in a hovel, or beneath the unkindest sky with the loved ones they are content. Their fidelity has become a proverb, and death is not able to_ dissolve the bond of affection which binds them to their lords. The master may do what he will with his dog; may treat him as he pleases; may appoint him such a place as he thinks fit: there is no protest, no rebellion, apparently no discontent. “The Father seeketh such to worship Him;” such is the fidelity.which is pleasing in the eyes of God; this is the attitude of heart and soul which brings us at last into “Canaan’s pleasant land.” I M A pril 4. “The Lord is at hand.”—Phil. 4:5.. SOME people’s God is afar off. He sits in “the circle of the heavens,” they know not quite where, upon a sapphire throne. Their only means of communication with Him is to send up A pril 2. “His servants shall serve him.”- — Rev. 22:3. “Who fails his earthly task to do, Neglects his heavenly business too;”
