“beloved physician.” This is clear from a comparison of the opening verses of both books. The Date —The book of Acts was written at the beginning of Paul’s first imprisonment in Rome (Acts 28:16,30,31). This would place the writing about A.D. 63. The Purpose —Luke wrote the book expressly to continue the record of the activity of Christ. In the Gospel of Luke he traces the earthly minis try of Christ; in the Acts he traces the work of the Saviour from heaven through the Holy Spirit in the lives of believers. Acts is also of great value as an inspired history of the found ing and early expansion of the Chris tian Church. The record gives us val uable information about Paul, his conversion and how he became an apostle (ch. 9), and also about some of the churches to which the apostle later wrote, viz., Thessalonica, Cor inth, Ephesus, etc. Study Questions on Chapter 1 1.
