plaining and asked Moses to pray for them, which he did. In Numbers 21:8, we read, “And the L ord said unto Moses, Make thee a fiery ser pent, and set it upon a pole: and it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten, when he looketh upon it, shall live.” Verse 9 says, “And Moses made a serpent of brass, and put it upon a pole, and it came to pass, that if a serpent had bitten any man, when he beheld the serpent of brass, he lived.” We will let this picture of a ser pent remind us of the one at which the children of Israel looked and lived. In the third chapter of John, Jesus was explaining to Nicodemus what it meant to be born again and how this wonderful experience could take place. He used this very experience of the brazen serpent to show what He meant. He said, “And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilder ness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: That whosoever believ- eth in1 him should not perish, but have eternal life” (John 3:14, 15). I will turn this serpent around and a red cross opens. This is what Christ wanted to teach Nicodemus, as well as us — that those who look to the cross are born again, even as the chil dren of Israel lived because they looked at the brazen serpent.
