when their time at Casa San Andres was over because they felt like they were leaving their own little brothers and sisters. Another lesson, Bourdon noted, that students will learn during their mission trip to Guatemala concerns what the really im- portant things in life are. Part of themission requirements for participants is they must leave at home their cellphones and other typical «must have» electronic devices and games that are very much a part of Western culture, along with jewellery, makeup and other «necessities of modern life» and learn to live without them. «We don’t want to be ‘flashy’,» said Bour- don, adding that the week at Casa San An- dres will teach the students to enjoy amuch simpler lifestyle. «Brand names don’t matter to anyone down there.» While in Guatemala, the students will be expected to help out at the orphanage in various ways. That includes working in the garden, working in the kitchen, working on finishing a visitor’s house at the orphanage, and helping the staff with special needs for the children at Casa San Andres.

Four students from Saint Francis Xavier Catholic High School are spending their March break below the Equator, away from the Canadian snow and the cold almost- spring wind. They are part of an annual Mission Trip program in Guatemala. Courtney Harmison, Abby Hyndman, Franco Cuevas and Aaron Brisson are staying and working at the Nuestros Pequeños Her- manos Orphanage (NPH) village of Casa San Andres in Parramos, Guatemala. Along with students from several other schools in the Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario (CDSBEO), the four will be helping out at the orphanage along withmeeting and working with the children who live there. But, as one of their school mission shepherds noted, the students fromCanadamay learn more from the children of Guatemala by the end of their week’s stay than the children learn from them. «They’ll be seeing a different culture, and living a different culture,» said Chrs-

during themission trip, is the idea of family. The children may be orphans, due to one reason or another, but they do not see them- selves as orphans or as alone in the world. They have each other and the guardians who care for them in the village. «They consider themselves a family,» Bourdon said, adding that for students from North America who took part in past mission trips, this is one of themost impressive things about the children. Some students who have no siblings of their own at home even cried
