Wincanton held its first race meeting at Hatherleigh on August 1, 1867 when thousands of spectators attended in all their finery. Wincanton came under the wing of The Jockey Club in 1966 – the second Jockey Club racecourse after Cheltenham – and continues to thrive as a flagship course. Former Wincanton directors, such as Lord Stalbridge, Harry Dufosee and Dick Hunt, played a pivitol role in safeguarding the future of the racecourse. Indeed, Wincanton’s directors continue to campaign for the racecourse and have commissioned a 60-page coffee-table book called Wincanton Racecourse: The First 150 Years. With the help of families who have been involved with the racecourse for generations, George Bingham has recalled Wincanton’s 150-year history through pictures, records and words. Illustrations are by the acclaimed artist Michelle McCullough and the book is available from the racecourse office. The 2017-2018 season starts in earnest
on Friday, October 20 with a schedule that takes in 17 racedays and includes the prestigious Badger Ales Chase in November, the popular Boxing Day fixture, the thrilling Kingwell Hurdle in February, plus a stream of popular Thursday fixtures. The Season Opener, on October 20, celebrates with insights into Wincanton’s 150 years and the season ahead. ITV and At the Races presenter, Luke Harvey, returns as raceday host and will interview personalities about their Wincanton memories. There
