easy access to the victim. Since most IPV occurs in the home, behind closed doors, there is less opportunity to uncover and stop the abuse. Additionally, many abusers socially isolate their victims, leaving them no safe place outside the home and no access to services that could assist. This allows the cycle of violence to continue which often escalates to the point that the victim suffers serious injury or death. In order to increase the opportunity to intervene and break this cycle, all reports with a domestic connection are now routed to our Domestic Violence Unit for review. The Sex Crimes Unit (SCU) investigates sexual assault cases, indecent exposures, public lewdness, improper photography, injury to the elderly in care facilities, stalking, and any other crimes of a sexual nature involving adults 17 years old and older. The Sex Offender Registration and Monitoring Unit is responsible for ensuring sex offender compliance with court ordered registration requirements. The Victim’s Assistance Section works closely with the investigative units and social services to provide quality care and referrals to victims of crime. This group works to remove victims from dangerous situations and provide them with a pathway to recovery. The Criminal Investigations Division is exploring different initiatives to reduce the occurrence of offenses including an offender-focused initiative aimed at disrupting the cycle of domestic violence and expansion of the crime victim services currently offered.
