Fort Worth Police Department Strategic Plan

Recruiting It is important the FWPD provide the public with the most current policing career facts and utilize conceptual recruiting strategies, to improve the intellectual capital of this department. The Recruiting Unit will share the results of the tremendous amount of hard work from city employees and officers who travel throughout the country to recruit some of the best and brightest candidates to serve our great community in Fort Worth annually, as a staffing report will be included in each annual update. Currently, the FWPD Recruiting Unit consists of one (1) full time officer, one (1) supervisor, and several officers who volunteer to travel to recruiting events throughout our country. The FWPD candidates of today were (predominately) born into Generation Y (1981-2000). They have full and sometimes hectic schedules, and are extremely adaptable to the modern technological environment. Researchers claim that members of this generation have developed skills, habits, and behavioral norms of using technology, that obviously differ from those of previous generations. Because of the sheer size of this generation, there has already been substantial research into how Generation Y members play, learn, and work. Marketing analysts, corporations, agencies, educators, and employers, acknowledge the commitment necessary to understand the Generation Y learning and working styles and FWPD is no different. The events, trends, and occurrences of a generation’s first 20 years mold their core values and social traits, and in turn affect their attitudes toward policing, employment decisions, and lifestyle choices. Generation Y members offer a variety of labor strengths, as they adapt well to structured learning environments, large groupings of technology, and fast moving excitement, and with the right recruiting strategy, make excellent officers. As persons who grew up with the Internet, they are completely at ease within the online atmosphere, making them easy to train in new policing technologies, and in many cases, possess more facts than most instructors possess. Another important aspect of the FWPD recruiting effort is the desire for the composition of our police department to empathize with and/or reflect, as close as possible, the society we serve. The following charts illustrate FWPD diversity, and compare it to city population. Who is FWPD recruiting?
