3 Ways to Treat Yourself in the Season of Love

Valentine’s Day has dark origins. In the third century A.D., two priests were executed by Emperor Claudius II on Feb. 14 for defying his decree that no marriage ceremonies be performed. Both were named — you guessed it — Valentine. To commemorate their deaths, the Catholic Church began the holiday. Fortunately, much has changed since then, and the celebrations we now enjoy each February are much more focused on love. From chocolate and dinners for two to the increasingly popular “Valentine’s Day,” the day of love is celebrated worldwide. Whether your plans include a glass of wine with your girlfriends or a weekend getaway with your husband, we all have one question on our minds during Valentine’s Day: How can I look and feel my best? For a rejuvenating treatment, exfoliation is a quick and easy way to give your face a refreshed glow. Exfoliation works by getting rid of dead skin cells that build up on the skin. Without exfoliation, our skin looks dull and flaky, and it may even suffer from pigmentation issues. There are a few different types of exfoliation, and it’s important to find the one that works best for you. Treatments that are too harsh can irritate delicate skin and affect its appearance. Products that use alpha hydroxy acids (AHA) utilize the natural acids found in fruit to refresh your features. According to Harvard Medical School, AHA products are more effective than abrasive exfoliants, like scrubs and cloths. In addition to clearing the way for new skin, AHA treatments can help lighten skin that’s been pigmented from scars or acne, increase absorption of other skincare products, and reduce the severity of wrinkles. When using an exfoliant, practice caution and work with an aesthetician to find the right product. From treatments that an aesthetician provides to at-home regimens, we can help you find the best exfoliant for your skin. 2. Remove Hair removal has served many purposes throughout history, including cleanliness, defining status, and ridding oneself of a louse infestation Well, we have some ideas! 1. Rejuvenate

(yeah, gross). Hair removal by means of plucking, shaving, and even waxing with melted sugar has been around for centuries. Like any other beautification technique, hair removal has been updated as new technology and information have been introduced. About 50 years ago, the first laser designed to destroy hair follicles was invented. Over the course of the following half century, lasers were tested, altered, tested, and altered some more. Fortunately, science never gave up on our need for eliminating unwanted hair. Eventually, technology gave us modern-day laser hair removal in the form of electrolysis and intense pulsed light (IPL). All skin and hair types can be treated using these methods, and because of better knowledge about hair growth cycles, permanent hair removal is achievable and virtually painless. If you’re not already part of our Hair Free Club, your hot date this month might be the perfect excuse to join! You’ll get special discounts and the ability to be hair-free in less than a year! 3. Renew When was the last time you bought a new lipstick or makeup tool? Updating your makeup bag is important not only to get rid of out-of- season colors, but to ward off infection and products that have gone bad. Yes, even your makeup has an expiration date. Bobbi Brown, the respected makeup artist, suggests these guidelines for your products: toss out lipstick after one year, powder after two years, cleanser after one year, sponges after six months, mascara after six months, and wash your brushes every few weeks. You can also use your best judgment; if something develops an odd smell, toss it out. After you perform your cleanse, check out our beauty shop to fill in your gaps (and to find the newest lipstick colors). We even have products that are featured on “Oprah’s Favorite Things” list.
