Wonder by Ed Palacio. The reason this book is one of my favorites is because it relates a lot as to what I might run into as a speech-language pathologist. The story follows a young boy named August “Auggie” Pullman who has a rare medical facial deformity. The book does a great job illustrating how he faces so many challenges in his life because of his deformity. It also has differ- ent chapters in which you can read how other people around him and in his life perceive him. This book just shows the importance of the saying “Don’t judge a book by its cover.” We shouldn’t make any judgments or opinions about someone because of a deformity or any difference they have from oneself. Journal: Do you have a favorite subject? Garcia: My favorite subject has to be anything science-related. Not necessarily Biology or Chemistry, but more of the sciences related to my major. Specifically, in the speech pa- thology major, I have taken courses

such as Anatomy and Physiology, Neuroscience, Speech Science, and Hearing Science. I am really interested in how the brain works in regards to speech production and comprehension. I enjoy learning about how everything is working si- multaneously to simply produce one speech sound or motor movement. Garcia: I found Kappa through my mentor. Miles and I were sitting down studying one day and I saw his Kappa Alpha Psi ® lanyard and asked him “What is that? The letters.” He told me that it was his fraternity and he left it at that. The next day I looked up Kappa online and looked through the website and it all just made sense. A fraternity that strives to “Achieve in Every Field of Human Endeavor” and just reading about the Founders, was very intriguing. From that day on, I would see the Nupes on the yard making big moves. They were out here accomplishing things, running organizations, throwing par- ties, and on top of it all, they were Journal: How did you find Kappa?

Journal: What are your hobbies?

Garcia: I really enjoy working out. I do it as a way to stay in shape and just relieve any unwanted stress. I try to workout 5-6 days a week and make sure I stay active the rest of the day. Having a healthy life is im- portant to me. I also enjoy watching movies whenever I can. Some of my favorites are Training Day, Paid in Full, and Public Enemies. I can also watch whatever Denzel Washington is in, that’s my man. Garcia: My mentor is Miles M. Spann (Kappa Alpha 2012). Miles and I were paired up through a minority-mentoring program. He was pretty much the first person I met at ISU and he did not leave my side at all that entire year. He was also the first person on campus to tell me that I can make it. Miles is the type of person to think about everyone else before he thinks about himself, Journal: Who is your mentor?

a very selfless person. He made it his prior- ity for me to have a successful first year of college and really passed all his wisdom down to me. I tell him all the time that he really set up the path for me and I have been using his tips to make my way through. Currently, Miles is finishing up law school at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. Journal: Do you have a favorite book? Garcia: One of my favorite books is
