Would that many others would be as manly. Dr. Riley, referring to the theories of. critics concerning the construction of the Pentateuch, says: “ When 4,000 years from now the living critics ex hume the First- Baptist Church and find my library, they will take my hooks and prove that they are- composites. Wherever I speak of God, they will find one author and name him “ G” ; wherever I speak of the Heavenly Father, they will find another author and call him “ H. F.” ; wherever I call Him Lord, they will find a third author and name him “ L” ; and wherever I speak of Christ, they will name a fourth author “ C” ; and they will have exactly the same basis to prove that my hooks were produced by^ four men. that they have applied to the development of the composite theory of the Pentateuch.” r Read this letter from a Methodist Bishop ho a pastor, and say whether or not the spirit of popery is confined to Rome. “ My dear Brother: — “ It was the judgment of the Bishop and Cabinet that you should not be returned to W---------- . I am expecting you, as a loyal Methodist preacher, to go to the place to which you have been appointed. “ I made no appointment to W— -:';H for the coming year because those pro fessing to represent the charge repre sented to the District Superintendent that they would not support any pastor other than yourself; that all the money that had been subscribed for pastoral support next year was with the under standing that it was to be given person ally to you, and to no other pastor whom the conference might send. Of course this made it impossible for me to appoint anybody to that charge, and until they change their mind they will have no pastor.” The above is in line with the said Bishop’s policy to clean out the men who stand for the second coming of Christ. The bishops are making some desperate strokes, and a crisis is clearly coming along the same line in several denominations, hut we believe the lay men wiill stand solid for the “ Old Book” when the time comes. Something of the same method is seen in the recent action of the Baptist con vention in Michigan. Notice was given that delegates would be made up from churches co-operating with the conven tion plans. This was an unheard of
