Stupendous Lack of Modesty Dr. R. A. Milliken, president of the California School of Technology, has gotten before th e m inisters of Los An geles a number of times recently, to present papers on Science and Religion, in which he tries to prove th a t evolu tion is an exact science and religion must be fitted into it. The Rev. Bob. Shuler, president of th e Los Angeles M inisters’ Association, says of him in his paper: “Dr. Milliken did not de p art one jo t from th e usual treatm en t of th e question by so-called scientists. He joined his fellows by bringing in a verdict of abject and almost depraved ignorance against all who disagreed. He was very nice and soft voiced about it. He failed to give one single proof of th e doctrine of evolution. Dr. Mil- lik en ’s paper did one thing. It clearly portrayed the nerve of so-called sci entists who deny th e Christian m inister th e rig h t to en ter into scientific discus sion because, forsooth, he is not classed as a scientist, while the Doctor and his fellows en ter w ithout hesitation into the realm of religious discussion, glibly showing us how God has evolved from trib al gods and how th e Christian re ligion has come by progressive stages from religions th a t were n u rtu re d in barbarism and given th e ir origin in th e most nauseating sources possible. In all th is he clearly proved th a t so- called scientists are evolving a m ighty gall and progressing to a stupendous lack of modesty.” Slippery Methods of th e Modernists R idicule and half tru th are weapons th a t seem readily to fit th e hands of as sailants. of those who defend the his toric faith. F o r example, th e Chris tian Century, referring to th e Dr. Sla- ten incident, says th a t he was “ re lieved of his duties and paid his sal ary for the re st of th e year on account of his adm itted lack of faith in Satan as a physical being.” A few of Dr. Slaten’s own statem ents published in th e New York Times are all th a t is needed to show up th e method of the Christian Century: “ Jesus was only a good man. Joseph or some other man was his father. He never rose from the dead. He is now dead. HIs death had no significance for us except th a t he died as a tru e man ought to do, in th e pu rsu it of high ideals. He did not ascend to the rig h t hand of God. He is not th e re now to make in tercession. The F a th e r did not send
her w itness to -th e tru th and power of the Gospel in the present and the future, as she has in all h er past.” Bishop Manning stated th a t he believed in Jesus Christ not only as the Son of God, hut as God th e Son. Bosh! Ao exchange published by higher critics makes this sta rtlin g adm ission: “ It can hardly be do.ubted th a t th e large m ajority of th e young people of every community are quite outside the effective influence of any church. Those who a t first deny th e tru th of such a statem en t usually come, upon exam ina tion of th e facts, to yield assent. The youth of the country in th e small towns and villages pour into th e com munities of larg er size and into the large cities a t a surprising rate. The g reat mass of these young people never form contacts w ith th e churches.” The w riter goes on to say th a t th e rea son for tjie failure of the church to get in these young people is th a t it has overlooked its duty in relation to public recreation. He says it is the function of the church to provide some adequate plan of community recrea tion. The churches should secure a competent director of recreation for all th e young people who wish to avail themselves of its opportunities. Modern Scientists Don’t Know it All According to Colonel A. O. Green, of the B ritish Royal Engineers in Egypt, th e designers of the G reat Py ra mid had an accurate knowledge of th e figure of th e earth, for it is proven th a t th e pyram id stands a t the tru e center of the land surface of th e globe according to Mercator’s projection. It is tru ly oriented to the four cardinal points of the heaven, w ith an accuracy apparently unattainab le in any build ing a t the present time. Another in teresting fact shjowing th a t th e an cients were well enlightened in the sciences has been brought to light by Colonel Lockwood Marsh, secretary of the Royal A eronautical Society, in an ancient m anuscript which contains the rem arkable statem en t th a t King Solo mon gave to th e Queen of Sheba “ a vessel wherein one could traverse the air, which Solomon had made by the wisdom th a t God had given unto him .” Was the wise man far wrong when he declared, “There is nothing new under th e sun” ?
