hundred to one; th is m an’s g ift was then as of one hundred dollars, while the first m an’s gift was as of one penny. Now the proportion of one hundred dol lars to one cent is ten thousand to one. So the gift of the second man was ten thousand times g reater th a n th a t of th e first, though each gave a silver dol la r of th e same coinage. But compare the poor widow w ith her two mites, all the living th a t she had. If we would estim ate th e value of her gift, as compared w ith w hat she had left, it would tak e th e symbols of infinity, and more, to express it. Is it any wonder then th a t th e Lord said she had given more th a n all who had n Ü n A Philosophical Oddity The following appeared as a com munication in th e P asadena S tar News. I t was w ritten by Prof. Roland C. Ross, A ssistant Superintendent of N ature Study in th e Los Angeles City Schools, in answer to Dr. Daniel P. Fox, who lectured in favor of evolution in P asa dena. Prof. Ross for several years has stood like a Daniel against th e on rush of evolutionary propaganda in the school system, and while he has made for him self a few good enemies because of his defense of the Scriptures, he has won th e respect of not a few well- known educators and school teachers and has a lot more of them doing some thinking, for he has challenged the evolution question w ith clean-cut facts th a t no one has been able to gainsay. We may imagine th a t she dropped one of h er little coins into th e box appointed for procuring lambs for th e temple sacri^ces, and the other into the box set aside fo r the poor. Thus she showed th a t she tru f - loved the Lord her God w ith all her soul, m ight and strength, and h er neigh bor as herself. Possibly we should unlearn some of our worldly mathem atics, and learn something of th e divine arithm etic of giving. By Roland C. Ross, Pasadena, Calif. Logically and morally such an union cannot be m aintained, for th e phrase Christian-évolution is a contradiction in term s and a philosophical oddity. Evolution is a purely n atu ra listic doctrine, while Christianity postulates the supernatural. Evolution stands purely upon investigation, Christianity upon revelation, “Thus saith th e Lord.” Evolution satisfactorily explains the origin and existence of living things w ithout th e necessity of divine in te r ference. Christianity teaches th a t creatures became existent by th e m ir aculous act of omnipotence, and ac counts for th e ir continuance by the immediate and present action of a God both omniscient and omnipresent. “F o r by Him were all things made and by Him all things consist.” Many are impressed by th e claim th a t evolution is the product of mbd- ern science. It is not, bu t is, ra th e r as old as philosophy. Twenty-five hun dred years ago H eracleitus of Ephesus taugh t the doctrine of “ ceaseless
