WhenmysonMasonwastrainingasayoungmanhewas clear he was going to play college basketball, I always tookhisdriveforgranted. Ifiguredallyoungpeoplewould take advantage of opportunities and this commitment was common. Over time I discovered some kids will, but others won’t. It is a conscious decision that a young athlete makes, to be great. Talent is half of it, the other half is willingness to “redirect pain, setbacks, highs and lows to reach your goals”. Johnson. For those of you unfamiliar with him, I urge you to look up his story on U Tube. Here is some quick background: Inky grew up with a tough life in Atlanta. An over achiever by nature, just look at his size in the photo, healwayshadawinningattitudeanddreamed, likemany, of playing in the NFL. Just prior to his senior season at Tennessee his coach told him that his dream would become reality – word camedownhewasprojectedtop30 inthedraft.Justplay the next 10 games and your life’s dreams will come true Coach Folmer told him. His main goal for success was being capable of supporting his mom who was working double shifts at Wendy’s at the time. His life-long dream wasshort-lived– inthesecondgameoftheseasonagainst Air Force hemade a play that changed his life forever. He sustainedadevastating injurythatparalyzedhisrightarm andwas informed deathwas possible by his surgeon. He recalls the conversation. So,howdoes Inky’sstorygo?Hehitbottomandwallowed in self-pity? Hementioned that this was, next to the birth of his children and hismarriage one of the top three days of his life. Now stop and think, NFL sure thing with millions of dollars, gone! This is the best day of your life? I was taken back by his words. He turned lemons into lemon aid. I completely admire Inky – his resilience, strength, attitude and faith. Inky was told “son you will never use that arm” his reply was no sir I will use it every day. He uses it to inspire and motivate others with his story. One quote he uses I love. Along with manual labor jobs, work around the house such as cleaning gutters or hanging up wet clothes are common culprits. Inaddition,athleticpursuits likeweightlifting,swimming,andtenniscanunfortunately lead toshoulder injuries.Alongwith theseactivities,passivemovementscanalso be a problem. If you have continuous poor posture, the improper positioning of your shoulders, can make you extra vulnerable to scapula (shoulder blade) and rotator cuff injuries. Know the Warning Signs Allofusexperienceoccasionalachesandpainsfromdoingtoomuch,whichdoes not necessarily mean a chronic problem is emerging. However, when those pains don’t go away, or when the uncomfortable feelings have certain characteristics,
it’s important not to ignore them, and seek help. If you keep experiencing shoulder clicking or “popping,” for example, it may indicate a more serious problem in the shoulder area. Sharp pain should also be checked out with your physical therapist, as this means the shoulder joint is not moving in good alignment. There are also more easily-ignored symptoms, like a dull painthatrunsalongthesideofyourarm,orsuddenarmweaknesswhenever you try to carry something or reach for an object. These symptoms, you should definitely not ignore. USE IT OR LOSE IT
You can certainly ease problems associated with shoulder injury through medical attention and physical therapy. However, protecting your shoulders in the first place is always the best strategy. Make sure your posture is the best it can be at all times, whether it’s while you’re relaxing in your favorite chair, standing in line, hitting the gym, or working long hours at your desk. Think “up and back,” because letting the weight of your head and trunk rest forward puts pressure in all the wrong places, including your shoulders. Positioning yourself before sleep is also crucial; resting on your favorite side when the weight is on your shoulder can definitely create shoulder impingement over time. Avoid any positions where your arm is over your head while sleeping. You’ll additionally reduce wear and tear on your shoulders by being more mindful of how you use them. Does your job or sport absolutely require repetitive lifting, reaching or swinging? If so, it’s helpful to get coaching from a physical therapist—or even an actual coach—about how to reduce the strain on your shoulders by shifting your positioning and using correct technique. Along with placing your body more efficiently to perform tasks, it’s also helpful to strengthen your shoulder muscles for light but frequent daily chores as well as strenuous, repetitive motions. Try to do a combination of some basic exercises a few times a week, in order to strengthen a range of muscles, including those in your rotator cuff region.
Doing wall push-ups—essentially a standing push-up in which you “lift off” from the wall rather than the floor—is one classic option. Secondly, consider buying resistance bands, which are inexpensive and portable. Attach them to a doorknob and pull them toward you, holding for a few seconds with each repetition. Do these reps in groups of five, two or three times a day. Lastly, don’t forget that classic “chair push-ups,” in which your arms do the work of lifting off the chair, are great for toning shoulder muscles. What is one thing you’d like every patient to walk away with from their experience at Fyzical? If I could have every patient walk away with one thing is that they had a good experience and made friends with the Fyzical staff. We get to spend a good amount of time with our patients and end up knowing each other on a personal level. It’s nice to hear about different peoples life experiences, share knowledge, and just chat when they come in. What do you enjoy to do in your free time? During my free time, I really enjoy being outdoors, especially going out hiking. I also enjoy going to estates sales as well as auctions because there is nothing better than a good deal! What’s your favorite TV Show? My favorite TV show, as well as one of the only T.V series I have followed is Game of Thrones. What was your first job? My first job was as a busboy at the state line. I had a good time, made some good friends, and worked hard. Plus, I got to take home free bread so that was great!
