Tips for Staying Grateful

December is all about gratitude and embracing how impactful it can be not only in your life but the lives of those around you. Gratitude is defined as “the quality of being thankful; readiness to show appreciation for and to return kindness.” Quite simply, gratitude is short for counting our blessings. Below are our favorite tips for remaining grateful this season! Below are our favorite tips for remaining grateful this season! 1. Find gratitude in the challenges you face in your life. I know it sounds counterproductive but thinking about and acknowledging the things that are not ideal in your life right now can put into perspective those things that are great. This applies to physical

therapy, too! We know that the healing process isn’t always easy, and that injury can throw off the plans you’ve made. Acknowledging that you have a bounty of health outside of your injury will put into perspective all that you do have to be grateful for, and hopefully make your healing process seem like an easy feat. 2. Practice mindfulness daily. They say that just eight weeks of continuous gratitude practice starts showing changed brain patterns that lead to greater happiness. Just eight weeks to change the way your brain functions to start habitually focusing on the positive in your life. Science shows the connection between gratitude and happiness. One study* stands out. The

study randomly assigned three groups: one was instructed to note five things that they happened to them that made them feel grateful within a week. Another group was instructed to note five things that made them feel burdened within a week, and the last group was instructed to choose five things that happened to them, not focusing on either positive or negative. After ten weeks, the “grateful” group reported being 25% happier than the “burdened” group. If you wonder how this relates to you, know that those who reported they were happier participated in exercise on average 1.5 hours or more in a week, and reported fewer health complaints. Pro tip for practicing mindfulness: every night, note three great things that made you feel great during the day.

HAVE YOUMET YOUR Insurance Deductible?

An insurance deductible is the amount of money that you must pay before your insurance company pays for your medical services. If your deductible is met, your Physical Therapy may not cost you anything. Patients with family plans or those who have had major surgeries or have a chronic illness are especially likely to have a $0 balance remaining on their out-of-pocket expenses. This means that the cost of physical therapy could be minimal or completely covered by the patient’s insurance plan. If you are close to or have met your insurance deductible for the year, then now is the time to come in for Physical Therapy! Are you feeling aches and pains? Need to work on your core? Let us help you get a head start for 2020. Contact us today to schedule your appointment.

that you’ve been putting off. These can include volunteer work, healthy choices in your food and activity, spending more time being selfish, like reading more, exercising more, spending some well-deserved “you” time. Exercise is a great way to get endorphins flowing and once you achieve that, gratitude will come more easily. Your options are not limited! Do more of whatever make you feel fulfilled. Then, you’ll be able to make list after list of all the things in your life you can give thanks for. What are you grateful for this holiday season?

3. Keep a gratitude journal. This isagreatplace todedicateyour recordingsof thepro tipgivenabove. You can also use this journal if you decide to practice any meditation as a form of mindfulness... you would jot down any thoughts (positive or negative) you had during that mindfulness session to reflect. 4. Improving your happiness in other areas of your life. Not happy with your health? Change it... being grateful can make you happy but being happy makes it easier for you to feel gratitude. Make positive changes in your life

High. Low. Cheer!

STAFF SPOTLIGHT

Each person at the table is responsible for identifying and sharing the best part of their day, a part that maybe didn’t go so well, and gratitude or acknowledgement of someone else that made their day better in some way. Every person gets a turn and each person MUSThave a high and a cheer. If you can’t think of a low for your day, that is a-ok! We invite you to try the game with your families! Please letusknow ifyoucomeup with any fun adaptations. We are sure that Ryan would love to try out a new version of the game.

Kiersten’s 6 year old son, Ryan, has a favorite dinnertime activity. He calls it “High. Low. Cheer” and has become a consistent part of the Langel family routine. With 3 young children, it is often challenging tofindaway to listenandshare with each other. This game has become a great way to create the time to listen to each other, hear excitement, and see any struggles. With all of the time spent with family (and at a table) in the holiday time ahead, Ryan would like to share his game with you and encourage you to give it a try!

A healthy, strong, and active lifestyle is what everyone strives for. It is not always easy to obtain, especially for those suffering from chronic pain. The very thought of going out and exercising with your aches and pains may leave you feeling uncomfortable. There is fortunately a simpler solution to gaining the active lifestyle you desire. Physical therapy can help you achieve optimum levels of health and fitness, all while reducing your pain. How Do I Begin? Maintaining a healthy lifestyle takes work, but once you get into the groove, it becomes much easier. For example, eating nutritious foods is one of the easiest ways to improve your health (although we know those sweets are hard to kick.) Physical activity is the hardest aspect to get in the habit of doing, especially if you are being held back by chronic pain. With the help of a physical therapist, it is possible to reclaim your pain-free, healthy lifestyle, and get back to doing the activities you love. What Exactly Is Physical Therapy? Physical therapy is generally comprised of three important phases: pain relief, strengthening, and functional integration. Your physical therapist will make sure that your treatment plan won’t bring you any pain or discomfort. This is achieved through several treatment services, such as ice and heat therapies, stretching, bracing, and ultrasound. Becoming Healthier, Stronger, &MoreActive

An active lifestyle is also dependent upon movement. We will cater your treatment plan around specific movements designed to increase your strength, flexibility, balance, and overall mobility. You will be assisted with many of these exercises, and will also be provided some simple ones that can be done at home. The end result of physical therapy is living the life you want, free from painful limitations. That can only happen when you apply the concepts you learn from your treatments to the outside world. We are as dedicated as you are, and will encourage you to achieve all the goals you set forth in the beginning. How Will Physical Therapy Help Me? The purpose of physical therapy remains the same, no matter what you are seeking its services for. Perhaps you are still suffering from the lingering pain of an injury. Perhaps you are recovering from a surgery and trying to get your range of motion back. Perhaps your joints simply aren’t what they used to be, and you are looking for relief. Whatever the case may be, physical therapists are dedicated to relieving your pain and getting you back to your peak level of physical health. A physical therapist is a movement specialist, educated in analyzing mobility issues with walking, running, jumping, bending, stretching, and almost every other form of physical activity. Your physical therapist can pinpoint problem

areas and create a customized treatment plan aimed at improving those areas. Through in- office sessions and at-home exercises, patients strengthen their muscles and joints, improve their balance, build endurance, and experience pain relief, all without the unwanted harmful risks of drugs or surgery. What Should I Expect? Your physical therapist will work closely with you to evaluate your mobility, balance, range of motion, and severity of pain. Your physical goals will also be taken into account when creating your treatment plan, as well as any health risks that may be holding you back. At your initial evaluation, you may be asked to perform basic movements, such as sitting down, standing up, walking, lifting, stretching, or other motions. Once your physical therapist has a clear picture of what you need, he or she will begin constructing a treatment plan to help relieve your pain and achieve your goals. An active lifestyle is more than possible, even if you struggle with chronic pain. If you are looking to improve your health, strength, and physical activity, look no further - we are here to help. Schedule a consultation with one of our physical therapists today and get started on your journey toward better health and wellness!
