LEMONADE DAY

Feature

“We came up with the idea because we all wanted to make money and what better way to do it than through a lemonade stand!” Nora says. Her favorite part of the experience was seeing the results of the work after the event. “Getting to count the profits in the end is wonderful!” she says. “We are spending some, giving back to our community with a donation, and saving a little too!”

“I drew the signs by hand and wrote my own advertising slogans to encourage people to stop by and try my lemonade,” Iris says. “One of my slogans was ‘Made with Love and Sunshine,’ and I was happy to see that customers really liked it.” Beyond learning how to operate a stand, Iris gained confidence through interacting with customers. English is not Iris’s first language, and she says she was nervous at first about speaking with people she did not know. Over the course of the day, she became more comfortable greeting customers, collecting money and managing sales. “I learned that it is okay to be nervous at first, and that I can become more confident when I keep trying,” she says. Iris sold 20 cups of lemonade and gave away another 10 cups. Her favorite part was meeting customers and connecting with other young entrepreneurs. “We visited each other’s stands, bought lemonade from one another, tasted different flavors, and encouraged each other throughout the day,” she says. After the experience, Iris was already looking ahead. “The whole experience was so much fun that I told my mom I would love to sell lemonade every weekend!” she says. For Nora, Lemonade Day was a familiar experience. This year marked her third year participating, and she continued building on what she learned in previous years. Her stand, Lovely Lemon, sells lemonade in multiple flavors along with cookies. The idea came from wanting to create a business and learn the process of earning money.

"It helps in getting their minds thinking about what to do with the money they make and shows the financial side of the lemonade stand with the emphasis on making sure to have fun!"
