Jail sawfive hangings, one in 1883, 1891, 1904, and the last two in 1933. Gallows were built in the courtyard the night before the hanging, and taken down the next day. There were two courtyards, one for women and one for men. As is in every old building, rumours fly. In this case, rumour has it that some bodies were buried in the women’s courtyardwhen no one claimed the remains. In 1985, the prison added a new section with prisoners working every day to complete the project, and they were happy to do so. Prison cells and common areas were quite small with limited activities, so being able to get out and build something helped the

The L’Orignal Prison wanted to start off OntarioHeritageWeekwith an open house giving guests the opportunity to see first hand some of the history of the region. Guests were invited to take a tour of the museumon February 15, to see the historic jail and find out about upcoming events. In 2007, the L’Orignal Jail opened its doors to visitors offering tours of the prison to see where prisoners spent their days and nights, serving out their sentences and sometimes being hanged. In its long history, the L’Orignal

time pass. “The prisoners worked hard, and slept well,” said Louise Bédard, president of the board of directors for the prison. “They ate well at the end of the day. They say the food was very good here.” The addition contained a laundry room, a classroom, a chaplain’s room, and a social worker’s room. The classroom is nowused formeetings that hold between 30 and 40 people and can be rented out for those interested.

“People can hold special events here,” said Bédard. “We have catering and guests can eat their foodwith spoons just like the prisoners did.”The old prison nowholds several special events throughout the year including a play, which runs weekends through part of June and July. The play, performed by La troupe des non-coupables, has been presented for the past five years withwaiting lists each year. “It’s a very popular play,” Bédard said. “We have a total of 714 tickets to sell. I already have 475 reservations.”The play is presented in the courtyard and in the courtroom in the old prisonwith a pre-theatre dinner available for those who wish to experience dining as the prisoners did, with a spoon. The prison also holds some regional historical exhibitions such as The heyday of Caledonia Springs and Origins of L’Orignal and is now working on an exhibition about World War I with the help of local students fromhigh schools. High school students are granted volunteer hours for the work they do to help with the exhibition. The L’Orignal Jail was in operation from 1825 to 1998 when it closed because it did not comply with government standards concerning prisoners’ detention. Until 1968, the prison held prisoners under federal jurisdictionwith sentences of more than two years. After that, it changed to a provincial jurisdiction for prisoners with less than two years sentence. The jail was the oldest in Ontario and second oldest in Canada with the first oldest in Trois-Rivières, Quebec. It was also the only francophone prison in Ontario. The building is now considered an historical site under the OntarioHeritage Act. Information about the L’Orignal Prison is available at at www.lorignalprison.com.. The old jury chairs can be seen at the L’Orignal Prison. However, they are not as comfortable as they look.
