Four fraud routines to beware
soliciting funds or other in-kind support for a phony ice fishing derby.The department’s organized fraud unit has already had one report of someone targeted through a phone call asking for money on behalf of the Ottawa Police Service. The caller said the money is for an ice fishing derby to help mentally-challenged children and asked for credit-card payment of the donation. The Ottawa Police Service
is not organizing an ice fishing derby or any other charitable event. Anyone who receives a similar call should phone the Ottawa Police Service at 613-236-1222, ext. 7300, or their local police station, or the CrimeStoppers confidential tips line at 1-800-222-8477. The phony inspector scam is in operation again in Eastern Ontario. Police in Lanark County have received calls about individuals claiming to be furnace inspectors from the Ontario Power Authority (OPA). They are trying to get victims to agree to furnace and hot water heater inspections.The OPA does not do door-to-door or phone solicitations for furnace or hot water heater inspections, and does not hire outside personnel to do them. Anyone approached by these phony inspectors should ask to see one or more pieces of proper identification and alsomake a note of the I.D. details. They should not allow them to enter the premises or agree to any pressure demands to sign a contract agreeing to an inspection until their creden- tials are checked out. If the person persists, they should hang up or shut the door and call police. A phone scam involving bogus billing for electricity is making the rounds. Police have a report of a person called by someone clai- ming to represent Ottawa Hydro and saying there was a problemwith the victim’s power bill.The caller hinted that failure to clear up the bill would result in power cut-off. Reports from the Canadian Anti-Fraud
Centre indicate this scam is in operation in other provinces also. Victims are pressured into buying a “Pay Power Money Pack Reload Card”, which is supposed to be a prepaid VISA or other credit card that will put the money to an account provided by the scam artist. Police warn against providing any finan- cial or personal I.D. information to anyone over the phone or in person. They should hang up and report these calls to the police. The old Internet inheritance scam is still around, though the alleged country of ori- gin for the person pushing the con may be changing. OPP in the EasternOntario region have reports of multiple emails showing up claiming to be from someone in the Sudan seeking help to claim an inheritance after the other members of the family were killed. This type of fraud routine features an offer to reward the victim with a percentage of the inheritance if they prove themselves trustworthy and reliable by providing spe- cific financial and personal I.D. information and records access. Anyone who receives such an email or any of its variations should not respond. Many of them involve alleged schemes for a “back door” money transfer from a region going through civil unrest to a “safe” bank account. One other variant involves a demand for advance payment on a finder’s fee to allow transfer of a surprise inheritance to the target victim. Such emails should be deleted and reported to police.

Ice safety reminder February’s subzero cold has kept the ice on the rivers and lakes good and thick. But police still remind anglers, snowmobilers and anyone else venturing out onto local ponds and streams to keep ice safety in mind. Check weather first and do not go out on warm or stormy days when the ice may be weaker or poor visibility could result in getting lost. Also, extreme cold could create pressure cracks that may be hazardous for vehicle travel. Do not go out on the ice during extreme cold conditions and wind-chill factor. Avoid alcohol when riding a snowmobile or ATV. Keep to familiar or known pathways. Always use the buddy system when out on the ice in case of trouble. Let someone know where you are going and when you will be back. Have a winter survival kit handy. More information on ice safety is at www.ofsc. on.ca. – Gregg Chamberlain Stay clear of snow plows OPP in the Ottawa area and surrounding region have had many calls since the beginning of the year about traffic accidents involving snow plows and other motorists. Since the latest snow storm over the Family Day long weekend, police remind drivers that they need to keep a safe distance from snow plows working on the highways and other roads. A blue flashing light indicates a snow plow at work, which means slower driving for anyone following behind. Do not try to pass a snow plow because there may be temporary whiteout condition for the road while the plow is working. Oncoming vehicles in the opposing lane may not be visible until too late. Wait until the plow has moved off the road along its route and visibility is good before attempting to move on. At night time, motorists approaching a snow plow at work from the opposite lane need to slow down and be careful to both avoid the blade and also watch out for impatient drivers following behind the plow who try to pass it. – Gregg Chamberlain

The Hawkesbury detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is investigating several incidents of break and enter that have happened in the area recently. All incidents remain under investigation and the public’s help is requested. On January 10, officers were called to a residence in East Hawkesbury regarding a daytime break and enter. An investigation revealed that someone had broken into the bedroom window and stole several items. Items missing include four confederation coins with the dated inscription 1867-1967; a 1941 brass sheriff shaped dog medal with East Hawkesbury written on it; a black North Face jacket; and a Nikon Coolpix digital camera. On themorning of January 11, police were called to a residence on County Road 14 in East Hawkesbury concerning a break and

Prescott- Russell united against bullying On February 13, the Prescott-Russell Coalition unveiled its new website, PRUnitedAgainstBullying. ca, which meets accessibility standards and provides, among other things, a variety of resources to children/adolescents, parents, employers and the general public. Interactive quizzes allow young people and parents to learn about the consequences of bullying. User-friendly navigation lets users quickly locate the information required, including national news and events organized to counter bullying in Prescott-Russell. In a news release, the coalition states that there is no place in Prescott-Russell communities for bullying and it is time to take action. It also says that bullying is a disturbing phenomenon not only among children, adolescents, and adults, but also among seniors and it is essential that everyone has access to resources needed to eliminate this social problem.

Le député de Glengarry-Prescott-Russell, Pierre Lemieux, s’est dit déçu de la récente décision de la Cour suprême d’invalider la législation canadienne interdisant l’aide médicale à mourir. «Je suis extrêmement préoccupé par la décision de la Cour suprême d’invalider une disposition législative qui a pourtant bien servi les Canadiens en protégeant toutes les personnes, et surtout les plus vulnérables», a affirmé le député dans une déclaration. La décision unanime prise par la Cour suprême a, entre autres, déterminé que cette section du Code criminel canadien était inconstitutionnelle et contraire à la Charte canadienne des droits et liber- tés. Dès lors, les patients souffrant d’un problème de santé grave et irrémédiable causant une douleur incessante et insup- portable pourront, suite à un consente- ment éclairé, réclamer une aide médicale pour mettre fin à leur vie. Cependant, la Cour suprême a accordé un sursis de 12 mois avant d’invalider les articles du Code criminel pour que les lois soient récrites, afin de respecter les nouveaux éléments présentés par la Cour suprême. Dès lors, l’aide médicale à mourir demeure toujours illégale.

Lors de la réunion dumercredi 18 février du conseil des Comtés unis de Prescott et Russell, le consultant Paul Blais a livré un résumé verbal au sujet d’une stratégie d’in- vestissement économique pour Prescott- Russell. Une partie de la stratégie porte sur le Collège d’Alfred et si sa mission à titre d’éducation postsecondaire et de centre de recherche en agriculture dans l’Est ontarien se poursuivra. «Il y a un argument de taille voulant que les investissements des comtés et de la pro- vince auront un impact fort positif sur le collège», a déclaré M. Blais qui a aussi fait remarquer que le Collège d’Alfred représente des retombées de 10.5millions $ par année en retombées directes et indirectes et qu’il emploie 90 personnes. Plusieurs maires se sont dits préoccupés par le fait que la stratégie semble suggérer aux Comtés d’investir les fonds des contri- buables pour conserver ouvert le Collège. L’éducation, ont-ils fait valoir, est une res- ponsabilité provinciale. Le directeur général des comtés, Sté- phane Parisien, a rétorqué qu’il ne s’agissait pas là de l’objectif du rapport stratégique.

Voix ƈ Là entre dans l’histoire de La journée M’enchant
Belle première, pour le groupe Voix ƈ Là, qui participait au grand mouvement, La journéeM’enchante , le 4 février dernier à la résidence pour personnes âgées, leManoir Carillon, à Chute-à-Blondeau. Ce chœur, composé de chanteurs et de musiciens de l’Est ontarien, devenait ainsi le premier groupe ontarien à prendre part à cette initiative qui, depuis 2005, invite les artistes à se produire gratuitement, le premier samedi de février, dans les résidences et centres de soins, notamment. La journée M’enchante a pris racine au Québec et s’est étendue à travers le monde. Ils sont aujourd’hui environ 500 ensembles à répondre à ce grand rendez-vous qui, le temps d’une journée, apporte joie et bonheur par le truchement de la chanson. The Arbor Gallery’s sixth annual Eros exhibition of erotic art began on February 11 with artwork from 10 local artists. Artists were onsite on February 14 to meet the public and discuss their art. The pieces included paintings, drawings, and textiles. “We try to get a range of outlooks,” said curator John Olsthoorn. “It is always very diverse.” This year’s exhibition focused on the influences of erotic art and its creation. Artists were asked to emphasize on classic, modern, and contemporary literature including film, poetry, novels, theatre, lyrics, and the spoken word. Fishing derby attracts nearly 1000

The event offered more than $40,000 worth of prizes, including a $2,000 early bird draw and a 2015 Polaris Sportsman 50 HO. Prizes were lined up alongside the pond for contestants to look over and inspire to catch the big one. There were fishing holes from one end of the pond to the other. No one seemed tomind the cold temperatures. In spite of their red faces, bright smiles lined the fishing holes. The contest ran from12 p.m. to 3 p.m. on February 14 with a brunch available on site from6 a.m. to 12 p.m. Fishing licenses were not required for the contest; however, there was a $75 entrance fee for each fishing hole. To be eligible for prizes, the anglers could only fish Pike. Contestants could register as many fish as they liked, but only one prize per person was allowed. Prizes were determined by weight and time of registration. All the fishing holes were drilled prior to the derby
Despite theminus 20 degree temperature on Saturday, close to one thousand anglers ventured out onto the ice at Island Park in Alexandria for the annual Alexandria Fishing Derby. “It was not the best day for weather,” said Denise Lavigne, one of the derby’s organizers. “But it was a great day for fishing.” The Valentine’s Day event saw people of all ages vying for a chance to win a prize and spend the afternoon outdoors.The derby has been going strong for 13 years and seems to grow each year as people hear that the odds are great to catch a Northern Pike and get a chance to win cash and prizes. “It’s a good day for being outside,” said Alain Turgeon, one of the entrants in the Derby. “I haven’t got any fish, just a few friends.”

Pour son 10 e anniversaire, le Amnesia Rockfest de Montebello s’offrira tout un party du 18 au 21 juin prochain, avec une centaine de groupes musicaux, artistes solos et humoristes sur scène. En tête d’affiche, le groupe Linkin Park, qui a vendu plus de 70 millions d’albums de par le monde depuis leur premier disque HybridTheory en 2000. Selon les
organisateurs, le groupe System of A Down, le plus en demande par les festivaliers, montera sur scène le 20 juin, un rare concert en 2015 en dehors de leur tournée d’avril en Arménie, qui commémore les 100 ans du
génocide arménien. Several organizers were involved in the weekend’s activities, which included skating, sliding, a dance, zumba, a fishing tournament, lunches, suppers, and a bunch of free stuff for the kids. “There were many organizations that worked together for this weekend,” said Manon Parent, organizer of the Family Day event. “We have a really good turnout today. We are so pleased.”
Organizers were thrilled with the turnout for Family Day at the Robert Hartley Sports Complex onMonday. By 1 p.m., there were 524 people celebrating the day. “It’s getting bigger and bigger every year,” said Stephanie Houle, one of the event volunteers and organizers. “Last year, we had left-over spaghetti, this year we ran out. Every year, we have something different. Last year, we had the Science and Techmuseum here. This year, we have Little Ray’s Reptile
