The Beast of wrestling

hurt far worst in my professional wrestling career than I have in all my cage fights com- bined,” said the 56-year-old fighter. “The greatest competition is life and unless you put something into it, you’ll never get any- thing back from it.” With a professional MMA Record of 101– 19–7, Dan Severn has seen it all and isn’t intimidated one bit by Hannibal’s ruthless aggression. Greco-roman, freestyle or pro- fessional wrestling, the heavyweight fighter can hit, stretch and wrestle circles around his opponent. While Hannibal was able to escape A.J. Styles’ high flying offense at the last GNW show in Hawkesbury, he might not be so lucky against the gritty Severn. “Themarquee says wrestling, that’s what my background is, and by God, I will get Hannibal to actually wrestle,” the UFC hall of famer said with confidence. “The fans will witness an athletic contest. In a lot of professional wrestling matches, you see a lot of punching and kicking, but not a lot of true wrestling elements. What happened to the wrestling portion? Replaced by leng- thy promos that sometimes boreme to tears. So, that he likes it or not, Hannibal will have to wrestle!” At 56, Dan Severn is still an influential mind and trainer in the wrestling world, with his training facility inMichigan, his worldwide seminars and his classes at his alma ma- ter, Arizona State University. Many remember his classic bouts with Ken Shamrock, Don Frye or Leri Khabelov, while other respect his 1,479-day reign as NWA heavyweight champion from 1995 to 1999. An intense indi- vidual, he thrives on competition and learning, two motivations and assets he never let down, inside and outside the ring. “Agent and wrestler Scott D’Amore said to me a couple of times that I’m the only guy that can work a shoot and shoot a work,

said Severn. Yes, there’s some UFC fighters I could embarrass in the cage, them being beaten by someone older than their father! But you know, the hardest part for a profes- sional athlete is to knowwhen his time is
