La province de l’Ontario a établi 9 jours fériés où il est obligatoire aux commerces d’une certaine taille d’être fermés. 9 jours ce n’est pas beaucoup ! Et pourtant, le conseil de la Municipalité de Russell V¬DIIDLUHjpWXGLHUXQSURMHWGHUqJOHPHQWD²QGHSHUP]HWWUHDX[ commerçants d’être ouverts les jours fériés. D’un point de vue économique, on pourrait penser que cela donnera un avantage compétitif aux commerces locaux en attirant la clientèle G¬DLOOHXUVjPDJDVLQHUFKH]QRXV,OQHIDXWWRXWHIRLVSDVSUHQGUHOHV commerçants des environs pour des idiots. Eux aussi emboîteront le pas et il n’y aura pas d’avantage compétitif pour les commerçants locaux. D’un point de vue communautaire, comment l’adoption d’un tel règlement fera de la communauté d’Embrun et de Russell un meilleur endroit où vivre ? Les commerces sont déjà ouverts à tous les jours de la semaine, les soirs et les weekends et d’autres même la nuit sans compter la possibilité d’acheter en ligne en tout temps. 9 jours de congé par année ce n’est pas trop demander. Pour être ouverts, nos commerces comptent sur l’appui indéniable d’employés dévoués qui eux aussi méritent amplement de prendre une pause de temps en temps pour décrocher du quotidien. La Municipalité de Russell regorge de jeunes familles qui choisissent de s’établir ici pour s’éloigner de la ville et se reposer dans une communauté comme la nôtre. Les jours fériés sont profondément incrustés dans nos habitudes. Ce sont des moments précieux passés avec nos proches à l’abri des tentations de la consommation déjà omniprésente dans nos vies. Embrun et Russell ont bien d’autres choses à offrir à leurs résidents que 9 jours de magasinage supplémentaires. Nous avons des installations sportives et culturelles qui se prêtent parfaitement bien aux familles en congé. The Province of Ontario has 9 statutory holidays per year when it is PDQGDWRU\IRUEXVLQHVVHVEH\RQGDFHUWDLQVL]HWREHFORVHG GD\VLV not much! And yet, Russell Township is considering drafting a bylaw that would allow businesses to remain open on these statutory holidays. From and economic point of view, one would think that this gives local businesses a competitive advantage by attracting customers from elsewhere to shop with us. However, do not assume that our local merchants are complete fools. Everyone will feel the need to MXPSRQWKHEDQGZDJRQDQGUHPDLQRSHQ,QWKHHQGWKHUHZLOOEHQR competitive advantage whatsoever for local merchants. From a community point of view, how would the adoption of such a ruling make the community of Embrun and Russell a better place to live? Stores are already open seven days per week including eve- nings and weekends and some even overnight, while online shopping is available around the clock. 9 days off per year is not too much to ask. To remain open on statutory holidays, our businesses rely on the undeniable support of dedicated employees who they also deserve to take a break from time to time to get away from the everyday hustle and bustle. Russell Township is brimming with young families who chose to settle here, away from the city, to relax in our community. Statutory holidays are deeply embedded in our customs. These are precious moments spent with our loved ones away from the temptations of constant consumerism that is so very present in our daily lives. Embrun and Russell have so much more to offer to their residents than an additional 9 days of shopping. We have recreational and cultural facilities that are perfectly tailored towards family time.
