W e have often to deny ourselves in matters that may be in themselves allow able. If they tend in our case to withdraw our hearts from Christ, we must b,e willing to give them up. They being innocent in themselves, we might be at liberty to choose them or not as we liked, but we have to think o f the discipline and maturity of our Christian character. In regard to this, such voluntary sacrifices are in the sight of God of great price, moulding us as they do into a loving and wide-embracing obe dience to Him.— S elected . for your sake long a go; something that shall make it worth His while to have loved and suffered and died; a joy for which He will be content to have endured the cross and despised the shame. W ill you not go afresh to Him, as you see the store He sets by your love, and give Him the promise that will gladden His heart, “ I will love Thee, O Lord,” putting far away from heart and life everything that would be inconsistent with such a promise, or grieving and disappointing to such de votion as His?—¡•A nnie W . W e have never known in the floral world a lily with thorns, but we have met with many lilies in the kingdom of His grace abounding with thorns, and consequently hard to get on with. A lily with thorns— what a ^contradiction, and what a carica ture! The more we ar.e like our Lord Jesus, the lesSÿprickly we shall become. Is it not suggestive that when He refers to Himself there is no mention of thorns? He is the Lily of the Valleys; we, the lily among thorns. But we may become like Him, and He can causé the thorns to disappear. ^ B - R obert L ee .
