SIX STEPS TO EFFICIENT PRACTICE

By Chris Carfangia | PGA Professional at Pine Lakes Golf Club

10 Set Clear Goals. Before diving into practice, it's important to have clear and specific goals in mind. Defining what you want to achieve helps provide direction and focus. Having a clear goal allows you to structure your practice sessions accordingly and measure your progress along the way. Break It Down. Complex skills are often composed of multiple smaller skills. Breaking down the skill into its components and practicing each one individually can be extremely effective. By isolating and practicing individual components, you can pay attention to the details and build a strong foundation before putting it all together. Focus On Quality. Many people mistakenly believe that the more time they spend practicing, the faster they will improve. However, the quantity of practice is not as important as the quality. It's better to have focused and concentrated practice for a shorter period than mindlessly going through motions for hours. Maintaining focus during practice allows you to be more present and attentive, leading to better skill development. Embrace Deliberate Practice. Deliberate practice refers to an approach where one engages in focused and targeted practice with the intention of improving specific areas of their performance. Deliberate practice involves setting specific tasks, receiving feedback, and making adjustments to refine your skills. It pushes you out of your comfort zone, challenges your mind, and facilitates growth. Record And Reflect. Recording your practice sessions and reviewing them afterward can be a powerful tool for improvement. Seeing yourself from an outside perspective allows you to identify areas for growth, spot mistakes, and make necessary adjustments. Additionally, reflecting on your practice sessions and noting what worked well and what didn't can help you fine-tune your approach and optimize future practice sessions. Seek Feedback. Lastly, seeking feedback from a PGA Professional can greatly enhance the effectiveness of your practice. Another perspective can provide valuable insights, identify blind spots, and offer guidance on how to improve. Constructive criticism is an essential component in the learning process, as it can help you identify areas of weakness and provide actionable steps to overcome them. So, go ahead, practice smart, and unlock your full potential!

CLEVELAND, OHIO

THE HOME OF SUPERINTENDENTS By Eric Hanisko Superintendent at Pine Lakes Golf Club As a Golf Course Superintendent, I have been blessed in my thirty years to be able to work in multiple states and at different levels of the golf maintenance hierarchy. From working

at high-end country clubs in California and New Jersey to

America’s first municipal golf course in the Bronx, I have experienced all facets of greenskeeping. I finally landed back home at Pine Lakes Golf Club where I played in my first golf league as a junior golfer. My love for the game and the aesthetically pleasing views of the golf course are what drew me to my profession as a superintendent. This is what the Trail offers each day with over sixty different courses. To be able to play courses with some of the best conditions you’ll find anywhere in the country that were designed by some of golf’s great architects is truly unique. Agronomically speaking, this is not surprising as the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America was founded in Youngstown by Youngstown Country Club greenskeeper John Herley. Whether you play our lush conditions in the spring, the hard and fast conditions of the summer, or take in the beauty of the changing leaves of the fall, The Penn Ohio golf trail has a unique experience for every golfer.

Cleveland is known as being the home of Rock and Roll, but the golf is just as fantastic as the music scene. With top courses like Sleepy Hollow, Boulder Creek and Fowler’s Mill, it’s a great golf destination with big city nightlife. Take in a Guardians Game, visit the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, or make it Christmas in July at the “A Christmas Story House”. With a number of different areas and courses to explore, Cleveland is the total golf vacation.

TIPS FOR BOOKING A PACKAGE

“Like herding cats.” I hear this phrase over and over again when booking golf packages. Group leaders get frustrated trying to create a golf package that fits the group’s needs while keeping everyone happy at the same time. While this is always the case with larger groups, even the smaller groups have problems coming to an agreement on what works best for them. For group leaders that have put together packages for years or group leaders that are just getting started, it’s important to remember a few helpful tips when starting your booking. The first tip is to think about the golfers in your group. How many golfers do you have, and probably more importantly, how many golfers do you want to have? Managing a group of four can be difficult; managing a group of thirty-six can seem impossible. Remember, if you are playing certain games or the popular “Ryder Cup” event, if one player drops out, you have to be able to replace him or her quickly. Think about the golfer’s handicaps and what types of courses they want to play. At the Penn Ohio Golf Trail, we offer over sixty different courses and fourteen private country clubs. This can fit any group’s needs for courses. However, if you have a group of higher handicap golfers or a mix of high and low handicappers, not every course may be perfect for your group. A course like Olde Stonewall, the No. 1 public course in Pennsylvania, with a slope rating of 149 might not fit what your group is looking for. Most importantly, what is your golfers’ budget? Some groups may want more expensive courses but are not as concerned about lodging. Other groups may just be looking for a house to gather the entire group and are less concerned about high- end courses. Second, think about what lodging works for your group. Does your group want to be under one roof together, or do they want the privacy of individual hotel rooms? Do you want to be on the course or close to courses, or does driving to courses not matter? The Penn Ohio Golf Trail offers many different hotel options, but the most unique aspect is the mansion lodging. They feature large common areas, big-screen TVs, pool tables, poker tables, full kitchens, and outdoor grill areas. For many golf groups, the ability to gather in one house creates the atmosphere that most golf packages lack. Finally, speak to your golfers about what courses they want to play. Think about the handicaps of each group member and if a particular course fits your group. What style of courses does your group prefer? With over sixty different courses, the Penn Ohio Golf Trail has everything from classic private member-only country clubs, such as Youngstown Country Club and Trumbull Country Club, to new public courses that are a shot maker’s dream — The Quarry and Boulder Creek. I always hear group leaders say, “Give me the best courses.” While playing high-end or difficult courses may work for some groups, more often than not, they don’t work for all groups. There are so many amazing public courses that offer great golf but will not break the bank or the golfer. Pine Lakes, Chippewa, Yankee Run, Reserve Run, The Links at Firestone Farms, Mill Creek, Sable Creek, Tam O’Shanter, and Oak Tree, among many others, will create a perfect golf package. At the Penn Ohio Golf Trail, we can do all this work for the group leader. We can help create the perfect golf package. With over sixty courses, fourteen private country clubs, four mansions, twenty hotels, eight destinations, and private catering, we can create a package to fit any group’s needs. The best tip I can give a group leader is to make it easy on yourself: call the Penn Ohio Golf Trail to book your package (877-534-6789)!

“G-o-o-g-l-e-.-c-o-m, Matt typed. Then, b-e-s-t O-h-i-o g-o-l-f r-e-s-o-r-t-s. A month later, we were standing on a 1st tee in Hubbard, a northeast Ohio town of about 10,000, according to its website, with at least one great grocery store (Giant Eagle!), at least two Waffle Houses just off the interstate into town, and the home to a golf package that includes 70 courses and 25 places to stay. T-h-e-b-e-s-t. The Trail, through its website or a phone call (877-534-6789), coordinates the golf and lodging, and the price depends on where you play and where you stay. I would get in on a Tuesday night, Matt the next afternoon, we would play 54 holes over two days and leave Friday. I left the Upper West Side of Manhattan at around 11, listened to a Pennsylvania radio potpourri of Queen, Huey Lewis and Eurythmics, and turned into the “Tod Mansion” at around 5. The Tod had multiple bedrooms named after golfers (I, naturally, stayed in the downstairs Ben Hogan room, and Matt, naturally, in the upstairs Jack Nicklaus room), an outdoor grilling area, an outdoor porch and a downstairs game room – all to ourselves. We were kings, and, yes, there was also a room named after Arnie. Wednesday, we played Pine Lakes, a 6,612-yarder from-the-tips par-72. Fall golf at its finest. Lots of red and brown trees. Lots of birds flying south. A few beers. A few pars. Afterward, we grilled 30 wings on our outdoor grill. In our mansion. Thursday, we started at Oak Tree Golf Club in West Middlesex, PA, a 6,658-yarder-from-the-tips par-71. Fall morning golf at its finest. We teed off at 9, but we were the first car in the parking lot, the first to roll Titleists through the morning dew and likely the first to crack open a beer. (A coffee stout – we got our morning coffee in.) A few traps. A few doglegs. Lots of shot making required. We played our second 18 at Reserve Run Golf Course in Poland, Ohio, a 6,161-yard par-70. Fall afternoon golf at its finest. Come for the 18, which includes a terrific two-hole stretch along a winding river on the front nine. Stay for the stories from the course’s owner, who was sitting in the clubhouse when we checked in. Matt told him that he lived in Milwaukee. He had a Milwaukee story. I told him that I lived in New York. He had a New York story.

Afterward, we stopped at Giant Eagle again (great meat department!), then grilled some steaks on our outdoor grill. In our mansion. Friday. Time to leave. And a pact that we would annually come back to Hubbard, a northeast Ohio town named after Nehemiah Hubbard, according to its website, with at least one great grocery store (Giant Eagle!), a mansion that can accommodate 20 or two, and at least three fall-golf-at-its-finest golf courses. T-h-e-b-e-s-t.”
