Close to $1 million is going into a new pro- ject in Eastern Ontario, to help farmers in the region with water management needs for their lands. The SouthNation Conservation Authority (SNC) is taking the lead in developing a hydro geologic model that will provide farmers in the SouthNation River watershed regionwith up-to-date information onweather and water conditions that may affect their operations. The federal Ministry of Agriculture and Agri- Food is providing a $997,654 investment in the SNC’s project, which will use a Canadian- designed hydrologic simulator which predicts the movement of water on and through the ground. “Our government recognizes that Can- adian farmers face risk every day inmanaging their businesses,” said Francis Drouin, MP for Glengarry-Prescott-Russell, during the Aug. 23 news conference announcement of the project in Winchester. “This investment is all about giving farmers the tools they need to adjust their farms to a changing climate. Helping farmers be better informed inmaking their water management decisions is good for the sector’s sustainable growth, good for

farmers’ bottom lines, and good for the Canadian economy.” The 15-month project will create an integrated groundwater- surface water forecasting model for the South Nation River water- shed. The project will use the HydroGeoSphere, a piece of Canadian technology, as part of the analysis and forecasting system that will provide SNC technicians with real-time information on surface and subsurface water conditions to pass on to farmers, and also aid the SNC with its flood condition monitoring and forecasting for the watershed region.

The SNC will sponsor one of the youth leaders eligible to attend the conference. Youth leaders, ages 14 to 19, fromacross the province will attend interactive workshops on sustainability, nature exploration, and climate action. “We’re excited to work with local youth to provide themwith opportunities to gain a better understanding of environment issues and insights into sound, sustainable practi- ces,” saidHolly Nyenkamp, SNC communi- cation and outreach official. “We invite youth to write us a letter explaining local environ- mental issues within their community. We

would also like to know what participants hope to gain from the summit.” SNC sponsorship will cover the cost for workshop participation, accommodations, and meals during the summit. Ontario Na- ture staff and volunteers will provide super- vision during the weekend event. Applications with the accompanying let- ters of intent must be sent to the SNC by Sept. 6. A scanned copy of the letter can be emailed to hnyenkamp@nation.on.ca or the original mailed to Holly Nyenkamp, South Nation Conservation, 38 Victoria Street, Finch, ON, K0C 1K0.

Local high school and college students with an interest in the environment may want to get their names in for one of the seats available in a provincial youth sum- mit later in September. The South Nation Conservation Author- ity (SNC) is partnering with Ontario Na- ture on hosting the 2017 Youth Summit for Biodiversity and Leadership. The three-day conference is Sept. 22 to 24 at the YMCA Geneva Park in Orillia.
