Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Slater Heelis recognise that everyone is unique. As a business, we believe that embracing diversity is key to success. We want to create a culture where a diverse group of people can bring the best of themselves to their careers, to build an environment where everyone feels supported and where difference is valued. Our aim is to help remove some of the social barriers to joining our business, either as a lawyer or in any of the support functions, to ensure we attract the best talent from all backgrounds. We are challenging ourselves to support and promote diversity within our teams and to ensure that we nurture inclusivity for everyone. We encourage cooperation and teamwork, providing fair, ethical treatment of all employees. This commitment is also true in the provision of services to our clients. The firm is committed to developing and implementing best practice in equality, diversity and inclusion as employers; providers of legal services; purchasers of goods and services; and in their wider role in the community. All employees, and those acting on behalf of the firm, are required to adhere to the firm’s equality and diversity policy which covers employees, clients and third-party suppliers. We are also the first law firm to be accredited by the LGBT foundation, which is a testament to our dedication to making our workplace somewhere everyone can thrive.

Living Wage Employer

Slater Heelis has joined the movement of over 7,000 responsible employers across the UK who voluntarily commit to paying the real Living Wage to our employees and our regular contractors. The real Living Wage is the only rate calculated according to the costs of living. It provides a voluntary benchmark for employers who wish to ensure their employees earn a wage they can live on, not just the government minimum. We are delighted to have been given accreditation as a Living Wage Employer, ensuring salaries will never be lower than the independent benchmark set by the Living Wage Foundation. At Slater Heelis, we recognise that paying the real Living Wage is the mark of a responsible employer.

Doing our bit for the environment At Slater Heelis we are passionate about our environment and understand that many of our clients are equally concerned and share our ethos. Slater Heelis has hosted a variety of green projects in recent years, from tree planting days and waterways clean up, to helping get our staff out in the community and giving back to nature. Additionally, we have delivered a paper saving initiative with many departments now working ‘paperlite’ as well as recycling nearly all of our computer equipment for inner-city schools to expand IT labs for their students.

Our locations

We have offices in Sale, Timperley and Manchester City Centre. When working in the office, we prioritise the wellbeing of our employees. From fresh fruit deliveries to social events throughout the year, we offer a variety of activities and initiatives to boost wellness and togetherness. Most of our employees split their time between working in the office and at home. We support his way of working as it empowers our employees in allowing them to work where and how is most suited for them. Equally, we get the best out of our employees because they are happy and are able to strike that work- life balance just right. Where possible we will continue to adopt a hybrid working model.

What our employees say

Jay Lafinhan, Partner

Richard Bradbury, Partner I began my time at Slater Heelis in 2015 as a newly qualified solicitor in the Commercial Property team. From the outset I was provided with the tools I needed to provide a first-class service to the client whilst progressing my legal career. I have been lucky to work on some extremely challenging but equally rewarding transactions. Within a little over 7 years, I was promoted to the position of Partner. This was testament to the support and encouragement I had received from my colleagues throughout the firm, not just those within my department. During this time, I have watched Slater Heelis grow organically and go from strength to strength. Despite the increase in employees the ethos and culture has remained constant.

I joined Slater Heelis as an Associate in the Commercial Property team in September 2015. I was made a Partner in April 2018 and was supported by senior partners in my department during the partnership application process. During my time at the firm, I have been given a lot of opportunities to go out and win new work and promote the firm, which has helped me carve out my own niche within the department. Whilst a lot of firms pay lip service to the work-life balance and having a family atmosphere, these are core values of Slater Heelis which is reflected and actively encouraged by senior management and resonates throughout the firm.

Mohima Miah, Solicitor I started as a solicitor in the Court of Protection team in May 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic. Starting a new job in the middle of lockdown isn’t the best way to embark on a new role. Despite that, team morale was really uplifting and everyone made me feel so welcome during this difficult time. The team at Slater Heelis really go above and beyond caring about clients; it is not just a file for us to deal with. I love looking after my clients, so working with a team that has the same ethos as I do reassures me that this is the right firm for me.

Kristen Drummond, Chief Marketing Officer I joined Slater Heelis as a Marketing Manager in 2015 and was made Chief Marketing Officer in 2023. Since working at the firm, I have never felt more at home. Slater Heelis really does support inclusion and diversity in the workplace, and that’s important to me. I became the firm’s first LGBTQ+ Champion and helped Slater Heelis to become the first legal firm accredited by the LGBT Foundation in 2022. Additionally, I sit on the firm’s Equality, Diversity & Inclusion steering committee where we work in allyship towards inclusivity to help shape our internal policies and processes, as well as our approach to client care for all.
