What matters now
Time has a way of changing our perspective. The lessons that seemed ordinary at school often prove invaluable later in life, while success can come to mean something quite different from what we imagined as teenagers. In this new annual feature, What matters now, we invite Old Boys from across the generations to reflect on their lives by answering the same four questions. Their responses are honest, thoughtful and, we hope, a source of encouragement for both current students and Old Boys.

What advice would you give your 16-year-old self? Do everything with gusto and be the best you can be because you end up getting to where you aspire to be. Rheon Salt (15317)
What life experience has shaped you the most so far? Balancing full-time work, studying towards becoming a Chartered Accountant, and launching the Sumner Wellness Studio, outside of work hours, have shaped me more than anything else so far. It has taught me the importance of discipline, resilience, and making the most of the time available to you. What does success mean for you now? To me, success is having the perspective to appreciate how far you’ve come while still being motivated by where you’re going. What advice would you give your 16-year-old self? Have more confidence in your own ability. Don’t spend so much time comparing yourself to others; focus instead on making the most of the opportunities in front of you.
What lesson from College became more important later in life? A person decides inside themselves they can get on with anyone if they look hard enough. What life experience has shaped you the most so far? My 17-year-old son making negative, defeatist comments about our planet and our civilisation’s future because of anthropogenic climate change. What does success mean for you now? Striving to be a good person in everything I do.
What lesson from College became more important later in life? Simply saying yes to opportunities. Whether it was taking part in the rock band, completing the Duke of Edinburgh Award, House Plays, or getting involved in activities outside my comfort zone, some of my best experiences came from giving things a go.
