The Lakes South Morang College respectfully acknowledges that beneath the significant River Red Gums that feature across our school's landscape lay the traditional lands of the Wurundjeri-Willam people of the Kulin Nation. thoughtfully, collaborated with purpose, and demonstrated the confidence, creativity, and leadership that makes us so proud. It was inspiring to see them share ideas, set goals, and begin shaping a strong vision for the year ahead. 2026 will see a new and more involved Student Leadership Structure with actions teams in Learning, Wellbeing, Events and Communication. A massive thank you to Mrs Greaves and Ms Hayton who organised the half day to engage and educate our 2026 Student Leaders. I hope you have made the time to enjoy some sunshine over the long weekend and spend time recharging your batteries for a busy time into the lead up of Easter. Last week, I had the pleasure of attending the Primary & Secondary Leaders Conference capably run by the School Captains. Over 40 students were involved in a range of activities to build their leadership capabilities with a focus on whole school improvement. Our students across both Primary and Secondary engaged

The Lakes South Morang College Newsletter COLLEGE REPORT
NEW KINDERGARTEN We are delighted to announce the opening of the new The Lakes South Morang Kindergarten. This wonderful new space will provide funded 3- and 4-year-old kindergarten for local children with a welcoming, safe, and inspiring environment to learn, play, and grow. The new kindergarten reflects our commitment to supporting early childhood education and ensuring families in our community have access to high-quality learning opportunities close to home. We look forward to seeing many young learners begin their early education journey at The Lakes South Morang Kindergarten and wish all staff, children, and families a fantastic start. NAPLAN 2026 While we have completed our early entry tests and data collection, we now prepare for the Year 3, 5, 7 & 9 NAPLAN. The testing process began on Wednesday 11th March and will conclude on Tuesday 17th March. We wish all our NAPLAN students the very best as they share their learning and knowledge during this process. NAPLAN is a measure of a point in time and is an adaptive test. Students begin with the same test question however their following questions are then tailored based on the previous responses. This allows students to respond to answers at their level and hopefully alleviates any angst. SCHOOL COUNCIL 2026 We have now concluded our School Council nomination process. I am pleased to announce our 2026 parent representatives – Veronica Marsh, Anna-Lisa Tewma, Grant Voss, Jenny Archibald, Katie Morris, Laura Johnson and Jo Mallapa. We will hold our AGM on Tuesday March 17th, to present the Annual Report to the School community and to co-opt nominated community members onto council. Our School Councillors play an important role in our school and we are grateful for their thoughts, considerations, and perspectives. A massive thank you to Josie Benfari, Helen Skendaris and Kathryn Lieschke, who are taking a well-earned rest after serving on the School Council for over a combined 10 years with dedication and distinction. Your commitment and contribution to making our College the best it can be, cannot be denied. We are incredibly grateful for the time, energy, and passion you have given to our school community. MOBILE PHONES A reminder that the Department of Education has in place a mobile phone ban that requires students who bring mobile phones to school to have them switched off and securely put away during school hours. Smart devices such as iWatch need to be put on flight mode or School mode, if they are going to be worn during school time. The Department required all schools to ensure the ban was in place and enforced from the beginning of 2024. The ban applies equally to all Government schools right across the State. For further information, please visit our school website.
LEARNER REVIEW MEETING Thank you to all parent/carers who attended our Learner Review Meetings on Tuesday. It was fantastic to see a very high number of bookings and conversations happening throughout the College. We highly value the opportunity to meet with families and students in person. Students have been working hard to develop their learning goals to share with their families. This is a new focus for the Term One meeting on Primary. We changed the timing of the Term One Learner Reviews in response to feedback we received from parents and carers that they wanted more information about their child's learning sooner in the year. This will be further enhanced by a progress report that will be completed by teachers at the end of Term One. Parents and carers will also receive formal semester reports in Term Two and Four, which is a requirement of the Department of Education. FAMILY ENGAGEMENT AT THE LAKES At The Lakes, we believe that when schools, homes and communities agree that they are stronger together than apart, students will be able to thrive academically and personally.
Good partnerships are based on: Open and honest communication
Trust and respect Working together Fair and reasonable expectations by all.
The Department of Education Respectful Behaviours within the School Community Policy outlines the shared roles of parents, carers and school staff in creating a positive environment for learning. We want all students, staff and families to feel safe and supported in our school environment. We want to emphasise the importance of raising issues or problems in a respectful manner with the school. It is not appropriate to approach other families or children in the school environment. If something has happened at school, please raise it with the class teacher or a member of leadership. EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT AT THE LAKES Throughout the year, we are required to conduct emergency management drills as part of our school Emergency Management Plan (EMP). This will include a range of drills for different purposes including fire drills, lockdown drills, evacuation drills etc. If for any reason you think that these drills may be a cause of concern for your child, please contact the office to discuss this further. We will let the community know via Compass prior to the drills being conducted. IMPROVING TOILET BEHAVIOUR We have noticed a range of issues in the toilets over the past few weeks, including throwing toilet paper, vandalism and wasting learning time. To help minimise disruptions and ensure our facilities remain clean and available for everyone, we strongly encourage students to use the toilets before school and during scheduled break times such as recess and lunch whenever possible. We appreciate everyone’s cooperation in taking care of our school facilities and supporting a positive learning environment for all students.
Have a wonderful week ahead.
POLICY SPOTLIGHT
EXCURSION POLICY CHANGES regarding Use of Train Services
Dear Parent/Guardian,
I am writing to inform you that, following the tragic death of a young person in our community last week at Mernda Train Station during peak hour, the College leadership team has made the decision to implement additional measures to mitigate safety risks associated with school- organised excursions in 2026.
Effective immediately, no school-based excursions are to involve the use of train transportation. This includes meeting at or disembarking from any train station .
This decision has been made in response to the increasing number of incidents occurring on trains and at train stations.
As a College, we believe it is important to take proactive steps to minimise risks to our students at this difficult time. We also believe that our families will understand and support this precautionary approach.
This matter will be included on the agenda for final approval at the School Council meeting on 17 March 2026. The College Excursion policy change will be reviewed at the beginning of 2027.
In the meantime, this change takes effect from Tuesday 10th March .
Staff will be asked to make alternative arrangements for excursions via alternate transport (including buses, trams and Ubers/Maxi cabs for small groups) where possible or otherwise, cancel the excursion. For VCE students studying external VET courses and for independent excursions in Years 11 & 12, we will be writing to senior school families to strongly recommend that students avoid train transportation and seek alternative methods of travel to attend to their vocational studies.
We will always prioritise student and staff safety at the College.
Regards
Bill Panas College Principal

I help create and share messages through announcements, newsletters and social media. I also support presentations and assemblies and make sure everything we share reflects our College Values and includes everyone. One thing I would like to implement at our school is “The Voice Vault”. “The Voice Vault” is a question box where students can share ideas, ask questions and suggest improvements for The Lakes. The Communications Action Team can answer some questions at assembly each fortnight. Enjoy this new look Student Perspective space where we will keep you updated on what has been happening and what is coming up!
Hi everyone! My name is Danny and I’m part of the Primary Communications Action Team. I’m in Year 1 in Miss Adams’ class. At school, some of my favourite subjects are Math and Art because I love solving number problems and being creative with my drawings. When I’m not at school, I really enjoy playing Minecraft because I like building cool worlds and coming up with fun ideas. I also love playing Mario Kart with my family and friends, it’s so much fun trying to race each other and win! My role is to help make sure student voices are heard across the College. The Lakes South Morang College Newsletter CURRICULUM
It has been an exciting and energetic start to the year for our Athlete Development program. Students have embraced every opportunity to challenge themselves, improve their performance, and represent our school with pride. IMPROVING PERFORMANCE
Our Athlete Development Program has started the year with purpose and intensity. Students have been working consistently across three key performance areas:
Strength Development (Weights Room)
Formula 1 Excursion
Athletes have been building foundational strength in the weights room to directly transfer into their chosen sports. Sessions have focused on: Lower body strength (squats, lunges, hinge patterns) Upper body strength and stability Core strength and trunk control Safe lifting technique and progressive overload The emphasis has been on quality movement first, ensuring students develop proper technique before increasing load. Stronger athletes are more powerful, more resilient, and better equipped to handle the demands of competition.
Earlier this week, the Athlete Development Students attended the Formula 1 Grand Prix excursion at the iconic Australian Grand Prix held at Albert Park Circuit. The Formula 1 excursion was one of the best experiences I’ve had through school sport. Seeing the cars up close and hearing them at full speed was incredible. The speed of the drivers really stood out to me. What I enjoyed most was watching how every team worked together. It made me realise how important teamwork and preparation are in any high- performance environment. I also took away how much attention to detail matters. It made me think about my own sport and how I can focus more on technique, recovery, and preparation to improve my performance.” The excursion was not only an exciting day out but also a powerful learning opportunity. Students were able to connect elite sport performance to their own development, understanding the importance of preparation, teamwork, and high standards.
Sport-Specific Skill Work
Athletes have also been refining their individual sport skills during targeted sessions. Whether it’s ball handling, striking, agility patterns, or positional movement, students have been focusing on:
Repetition under pressure Decision-making Game-speed execution Technical correction and feedback
The goal is to bridge the gap between training and performance.
Speed Mechanics & Acceleration
Speed has been a major focus this term. Students have been learning how to:
Improve sprint posture Develop explosive acceleration Enhance stride efficiency Increase overall running mechanics
Through structured sprint drills and coached feedback, athletes are not just running more — they are learning how to run faster and more efficiently.
SCHOOL COUNCIL REPORT
Hello all,
A very (belated) warm welcome to all our new families and returning families to The Lakes in 2026. Hope everyone has settled in OK – amazingly we are already in the last weeks of Term 1!
For our new families, School Councils play an important part in Victorian schools and is made up of parent/carer representatives, teacher representatives, students and the Leadership Team. We are essentially the parent/carer voice of the school community and act as that conduit regarding school issues between the parent/carer community and the school. Council meets 8 times per year on a Tuesday and visitors and observers are always welcome!
Our 17 February meeting was our last meeting for the 2025/26 Council term. At this meeting we:
Had a walk through of the new kindergarten on the Primary Campus, facing The Lakes Boulevard. Operated by Kids First, it is now open offering both a 3-year-old and 4-year-old program.
Heard a presentation from our new 2026 Secondary School Captains on the new student leadership structure across both campuses.
Were presented with our 2025 Year 12 scored VCE student destination data.
Were presented with the 2026 Annual Implementation Plan – this plan sets out the school’s performance goals and targets for the year.
Were updated with updates to the school’s organisational structure. It has been updated in 2026 to reflect the changes to leadership roles, including the appointment of Ms Short to the role of Assistant Principal, Teaching & Learning.
Endorsed installing air-conditioning in administration and leading teacher offices.
Endorsed the updated Uniform Policy to reflect the Department’s policy that parent/carers no longer need to purchase shorts and pants with the school’s logo on them. Communication to clarify the updates was sent to families in mid-February.
Discussed the Fundraising Sub-committee’s plans for this year’s Mother’s Day breakfast and stall. The breakfast will be held on Monday 11 May (the day after Mother’s Day) and the stall will be on Wednesday 6 May.
Raised the possibility and support for Camp Australia to start offering a holiday program at The Lakes.
Requested that communication goes out to parent/carers around the promotion of the ‘nude food’ concept to Primary families.
Requested that the school review primary book resources and explore options for sourcing decodable books to replace the current primary readers.
Endorsed a separate uniform for students and staff in both the Athlete, Artist and Dance Development Programs on Secondary.
Our next meeting will be the AGM on March 17 at 5:30pm, where the results of the recent call for nominations will be announced and the new 2026/27 Council will be formed.
As always, if you have any issues, ideas, questions that you would like raised at our next Council meeting, or any other support, we are more than happy to hear from families so please feel free to send me an email to amanda.farrelly@education.vic.gov.au.
Cheers,
Amanda Farrelly School Council President

The Photographing, Filming and Recording Students Consent Form is provided by The Lakes South Morang College at enrolment. Recent Departmental changes to this policy mean that this now only has to be completed once during your child’s educational journey at The Lakes. As a component of our transition to Compass, all families across the College will be sent a message on Compass or contacted by a member of staff in regards to Permission to Publish for your child provided at enrolment. If at any time parents/carers wish to give or withdraw their consent, they can by contacting the College or completing the form below.
NO HAT - NO PLAY We will be enforcing our ‘No Hat, No Play’ policy in Term 1 on the Primary Campus. Wide-brimmed hats (with the school logo), are available at the uniform shop.
YEAR 5/6 NOTEBOOK PROGRAM - 2026 We’re writing to inform you of an important change to our technology program for Year 5 and 6 students starting in 2026. After careful consideration and in consultation with the School Council and broader school community, The Lakes South Morang College has made the decision to transition from iPads to Windows touchscreen notebook computers for students in Years 5 and 6. This move aligns our Primary and Secondary learning experiences and brings our technology use in line with most primary schools across Victoria, who have already adopted Windows-based programs. It also ensures our students are better prepared for the digital expectations of Year 7 and beyond. Why Are We Transitioning to Notebooks? While iPads have served many learning purposes, they are limited in supporting the broader skills needed in upper primary and secondary education. Windows-based touchscreen notebooks: Offer a full desktop computing experience Support keyboard proficiency and multitasking Provide compatibility with the software and systems used from Year 7 onwards Offer improved file management, software flexibility, and better integration with our college systems Devices purchased through our approved portals will be
ROAD SAFETY AROUND THE LAKES SOUTH MORANG COLLEGE The Lakes South Morang College is situated near busy roads with heavy traffic throughout the day, with particular attention to the front of our school, where we have several busy intersections and shared pathways with Coles, Collingwood Language School, Merriang SDS and the Kinder. We strongly remind all families that students must always use the designated school crossings. We are increasingly noticing students exiting or entering vehicles while crossing or weaving through traffic, which poses a serious risk. Please use the designated drop-off zones and encourage your child to cross only at supervised crossings. Holding your child’s hand near roads and vehicles is a simple but effective way to support their safety. Please also take the time to talk with your child about how to stay safe near parked cars, footpaths, and driveways. Please note that the designated entry and exit gate on Lakes Boulevard will be closed in Term 1. This is due to construction on The Lakes South Morang College Kinder. Students and parents/carers are asked to either enter/exit the school through the Gordons Road gate or the front office.
