DMR Architects’ renovation reenergized the beloved and historic Bergen Performing Arts Center. The project transformed the theatre into a modern backdrop by renovating and expanding the existing lobby and adding a VIP room, complete with two bars and a private entrance. The former vaudeville and movie theater is one of the few such buildings still operating in the United States. Through the use of raw industrial design elements juxtaposed to the refined existing traditional décor, DMR’s design transformed the space to better appeal to the PAC’s eclectic audience while honoring the theatre’s historical character. Why was this particular job your favorite/most unusual? Interior design anywhere—but especially in performance spaces—is about igniting as many of the senses as possible including visually pleasing design, comforting materials for seating, and incorporating the best acoustics. The bergenPAC renovation allowed DMR to provide a unique performance space that contributed to the economic development and cultural vibrancy of the community, while also supporting the performing arts.
Size: 14,000 gsf The Center was designed to be contextual to the other buildings on the military base. It houses a medical health clinic; a large multi-purpose area which is used as an auditorium for recreational sports, dining and large assemblies; a kitchen with a scullery, food preparation area, food line service and loading dock; plus classrooms, offices and a fitness center. This multi-purpose new facility was designed with complete flexibility and durability to serve cadet classes year after year. The program selects 200 at risk 16-to-18 year old students in a voluntary 17 month alternative education program that helps change their future and earn their high school diploma or GED. Designing this facility that transforms the lives of these youth was very gratifying as it also enhances our community.
