COMMUNITY SERVICES
OPEN SPACE PROGRAMS SUMMARY OF SERVICES
The Community Services Department, in partnership with the City’s Public Works Department and the Irvine Ranch Conservancy (IRC), preserves 6,000 acres of City open space. Land management is performed in accordance with the Central and Coastal Orange County Natural Community Conservation Plan and General Plan. Community engagement and enjoyment of the open space is fostered through public programming that highlights nature education, habitat protection, and restoration efforts.
Accomplishments
Providing Increased Access: Increased the number of self-guided recreation activities like the new Bommer Canyon Exploration Day in July 2022, and the seven-day Bommer Canyon Nature Garden self-guided access in October 2022. Added interpretive signage next to the Bommer Canyon Catt le Camp to explain the area’s agricultural past and natural history for visitors. Monarch Butterfly Habitat: Initiated a monarch butterfly habitat enhancement project in January 2023 to support local and migratory monarch butterfly populations. This project provides an opportunity for the community to get involved and support the open space through free public stewardship activities offered on letsgooutside.org .
