PUBLIC SAFETY
In 2022, the Irvine Police Department continued to invest in the training of field personnel to effectively respond to active shooter events and other acts of violence. Patrol officers, School Resource Officers, and other field personnel participated in scenario-based training designed to enhance tactics, communication, and operational readiness. In 2022, the Irvine Police Department continued to focus on officer and employee wellness. Several programs were implemented or expanded to ensure all personnel have the resources they need to continue performing at a high level while meeting the expectations of the community. One of the resources added was the Support Canine Program. This program brought two specially trained Labrador Retrievers to the Department that provide comfort to officers and other employees in the aftermath of stressful or traumatic incidents. The support canines also deploy to assist crime survivors, family members, and witnesses. The Irvine Police Department’s Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Team consists of sworn officers who receive special training in the safe apprehension of violent and barricaded suspects. They work in tandem with the Crisis Negotiations Team (CNT), which consists of specially trained officers who attempt to negotiate with suspects to surrender peacefully. In 2022, SWAT/CNT was activated three times, all resulting in the arrest of individuals who were a danger to the community.
