PUBLIC SAFETY
The Office of Public Relations also enhanced communication by increasing the use of social media to share information related to police activity, community events and programs, crime trends, traffic hazards, significant arrests, and general crime prevention information. The Department has seen a significant increase in followers, impressions, and engagement on all platforms. The Youth Services Unit hosted a School Safety Town Hall Meeting. The School Safety Town Hall was an important event that brought together educators, parents, and law enforcement to discuss ways to improve school safety. The town hall provided a platform for participants to share their concerns and ideas, as well as to learn about the latest strategies and technologies being used to prevent violence in schools. By bringing together various stakeholders, the School Safety Town Hall helped to foster collaboration and build a stronger sense of community around the issue of school safety. The Youth Services Unit successfully trained all schools within the Irvine Unified School District and Tustin Unified School District in Targeted Violence Prevention. This training program was designed to educate school staff on the warning signs of targeted violence and provide them with effective strategies to prevent such incidents from occurring. The training program included workshops, simulations, and case studies. The successful completion of this program has helped to improve the safety and security of schools in the city. The Mental Health Unit has achieved a significant accomplishment through the implementation of the Be Well Program. Be Well brings together mental health care services uniting public, private, academic and faith-based organizations in a cooperative partnership that helps facilitate communication, bridge gaps, and eliminate barriers to care. The result is a more compassionate system of care that works better for everyone in the community. This program is designed to promote mental wellness among individuals and communities and has been successful in providing effective support and resources to those in need. The Irvine Police Department Threat Management Unit (TMU) is responsible for assessing concerning and potentially violent behavior, including targeted violence at schools, houses of worship, and businesses. This unit also provides mental health support to members of our community suffering from mental health issues. The TMU is also responsible for requesting Gun Violence Restraining Orders (GVROs). These orders are a powerful tool for preventing gun violence by allowing law enforcement to temporarily remove firearms from individuals who pose a threat to themselves or others, and play an important role in preventing gun violence in our community. In 2022, the Mental Health Unit issued 21 GVROs that resulted in the recovery of over 70 firearms and thousands of rounds of ammunition.
