SIGNAL MAINTENANCE SUMMARY OF SERVICES
The maintenance of a safe and efficient traffic signal system is an important responsibility to motorists, pedestrians, and bicyclists traveling Irvine roadways. The Signal Maintenance Division oversees the operation, maintenance, and rehabilitation of the City's traffic signal system. Specific services include maintenance and improvement of all City- owned traffic signal locations, maintenance of the City’s traffic communications network and infrastructure, review and update of the City traffic signal design guidelines and standards, review of new signal and signal modification plans, response to resident concerns regarding signal operations, and implementation of corrective measures when appropriate. Accomplishments Maintained 380 traffic signal locations and eight visibility-enhanced pedestrian crosswalks on a proactive schedule. Upgraded 266 field switches to enhance the security, performance, and reliability of the traffic communications. Converted safety lights at 50 intersections to L.E.D units for enhanced brightness and reduction in utility costs. Partnered with the University of California, Irvine, to execute a research project using artificial intelligence for traffic monitoring analytics with connected/autonomous vehicles; resulted in installation of Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) sensors at select intersections.
