PUBLIC WORKS & TRANSPORTATION

ACTIVE TRANSPORTATION & TRANSIT SUMMARY OF SERVICES

The Active Transportation & Transit Division implements City Council-approved transit and active transportation initiatives that enable the transportation system to carry more people with less roadway congestion and improve the quality of life in the City and region. Active Transportation & Transit coordinates with Orange County Transportation Authority regarding provision of iShuttle and other bus services in the City. The Division manages the transportation elements at the Irvine (train) Station, oversees the project development phases of Irvine Station transportation programs, and is responsible for the provision and maintenance of bus stop amenities throughout the City. The Division also participates in regional studies that focus on alternative transportation strategies. Identified results of the City’s telecommuting policy and rideshare outreach including Average Vehicle Ridership improvement of more than 2.5 employees per vehicle coming to the Civic Center over the last three years. This is up from an average of only 1.14 employees per vehicle prior to the telecommuting policy.  Adjusted the City transit service at the direction of City Council to match lower ridership resulting from hybrid work schedules for many Irvine employees.  Led the effort to install electric vehicle charging stations at the Irvine Civic Center for public use, resulting in over 17,000 uses and over 252,000 kWh of electricity consumed, which equates to avoiding nearly 180,000 kg of greenhouse gas emissions.
