Flanders Fields: A Commemorative Tour TUESDAY 29TH AUGUST – SATURDAY 2ND SEPTEMBER £649pp The First World War finally came to an end at eleven o’clock on the morning of November 11th 1918. Just over a hundred years after the end of the Great War, our commemorative tour explores the poignant battlefield sites, museums and memorials dedicated to the soldiers who lost their lives in Flanders Fields. Day 1 Depart from your home and make the journey to Dover for the short sea crossing to Calais. On arrival with continue to our hotel with time to unpack and take a stroll around Ypres. Day 2 Today we embark on a full day, step on guided tour of the wartime sights surrounding Ypres. Our first stop is the largest and most famous of the British Commonwealth Cemeteries, Tyne Cot. A short distance away, we then visit the Memorial Museum of Passchendale and learn about the history of the battle of Passchendale in 1917. After our visit, we enjoy free time for lunch in the town of Poperinge, before making our way to Talbot House, a comfortable retreat for the weary troops with a library, canteen, walled gardens and a chapel in the attic. We are immersed in the history of Talbot House, enjoying a cup of tea or coffee in the canteen, reading a book and climbing to the attic. Day 3 Today we visit the excellent In Flanders Fields Museum, located in the Cloth Hall. This moving museum now makes use of the latest technology in its portrayal of the history of the Great War. We then spend the afternoon at leisure, exploring this fascinating town. This evening we make our way to the Menin Gate, a memorial bearing the names of 54,389 soldiers who have no known grave. Here we join the enormously poignant Last post ceremony, which takes place at 8pm every evening as a solemn act of remembrance. Day 4 Today we visit Bruges where you can walk the quaint canals and enjoy all that the city has to offer. The historic centre of Bruges is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a joy to explore and with the famous Belgian chocolate on almost every corner, why not enjoy a tasty treat and indulge in some scrumptious Belgian chocolates or try a famous Belgian beer? Day 5 After breakfast we leave Ypres and begin our journey home.

SUNDAY 8TH – THURSDAY 12TH OCTOBER

The Rhine Valley is renowned for its vineyards, stunning scenery and historic towns, and this fantastic tour gives you a taste of the best bits of this picturesque valley. Day 1 Following a collection from home we head to Dover for the short sea crossing to Calais. We continue our journey to Germany, arriving at our hotel in time for dinner. Day 2 This morning we catch the cable car from Rüdesheim up to the Niederwald Monument, affording us spectacular views over the Rhine Valley as we go. From here, we continue by coach to Jagdschloss Niederwald from where we descend by chairlift down to Assmannshausen, where we board a river boat for a scenic cruise back to Rüdesheim. After free time for lunch here, we visit the Eberbach Monastery for a 90 minute guided tour and tasting of Eberbach Riesling wine. Taste buds tingling, we make our way to the RheinWeinWelt wine cellar to sample more of the good stuff – we taste 5 wines, helping ourselves from the numerous self-serve dispensers. There are around 160 different wines from the Rhine region on offer here, so we must choose wisely! Day 3 We spend today at leisure in Rüdesheim. We can spend time exploring the famous Drosselgasse area in the heart of Rüdesheim’s old town, sampling a glass of wine along the way, or, for the more adventurous among us, you may wish to take the train to the fantastic cities of Cologne, Koblenz or Mainz for the day. Day 4 This morning we head to the famous medieval city of Heidelberg. This outstanding city boasts the oldest – and one of the finest – universities in the whole of Germany. To help us get our bearings we enjoy a 90 minute guided walking tour of the city before spending the rest of the day at leisure. As we wander through the narrow streets of the Old Town, we can admire the iconic Heidelberg Palace that dominates the skyline here as well as the Alte Brücke (Old Bridge) straddling the Neckar river.
