New North Section of Wiley Post Park Opens Along Oklahoma River
A newly renovated section of Wiley Post Park is now open, giving OKC families a new place to play, relax and enjoy the outdoors along the Oklahoma River. The improvements to the park’s north area include two new playgrounds, a band shell, shaded swing loungers, solar lighting, new trees, shade structures, additional parking and scenic views of the river and downtown skyline. The North Oklahoma River Trail also runs through the 48-acre park, offering opportunities for walking, biking and outdoor recreation.
“We invite residents to come and explore the playgrounds, sit and enjoy the quiet of the river and spend time together outdoors,” says OKC Parks Director Melinda McMillan-Miller. The $8.1 million project was funded through the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 and Tax Increment Financing. Before the renovation, the area consisted primarily of green space and a parking lot. Future improvements will include the USS Oklahoma City Memorial, whose construction began last summer. The $4.1 million project will honor the legacy of the Navy ships named USS Oklahoma City and will feature memorial walls, historical displays, a plaza and a temporary replica of the submarine sail. Originally built in the 1930s, Wiley Post Park has served generations of Oklahoma City families and continues to grow as a destination for recreation, history and community connection.
