OCTOBER 2022
A NOTE FROM SYLVIA October is one of my favorite months—the vivid fall colors, crisp air, smell of dry leaves and the slightly slower pace of life. We pause to savor a cup of hot apple cider, read a good book and enjoy the Minnesota Orchestra on TPT, which will return later this month. You will also want to mark your calendars for a Sunday evening at home on October 16th when you can watch a triple feature of Masterpiece premiers: Miss Scarlet and the Duke , Magpie Murders , and Annika will assuredly be a night of entertaining murder mysteries for all of us at- home detectives. Another exciting release is Making Black America: Through the Grapevine . This four-episode series premiers on Tuesday, October 4 and is the latest documentary series by Dr. Henry Louis Gates, Jr. The series chronicles the vast social networks and organizations created by and for African Americans. In the series Dr. Gates speaks with historians, politicians, and cultural leaders to tell the history of how Black communities have formed spaces for themselves—from all-Black towns and business districts to Black Twitter—throughout U.S. history. Many of you tuned in last month to watch Facing Suicide and its companion digital series on youtube.com/PBS . The Facing Suicide Initiative was undertaken with the goal of impacting real change by raising awareness of proven suicide prevention efforts. This initiative has continued with community outreach events in Minnesota, as well as nine other communities across the nation. I look forward to sharing more about the impact of these efforts with you in the coming months. In the meantime, I encourage you to share the digital series with those who struggle with mental health issues and their support networks. October’s programming reminds me of what I love most about TPT. Our offerings are diverse. We entertain, educate, and make an impact on social issues. Yet, we never waver in the quality of the content. Thank you to all our members who make this possible!

LESLEY GOLDMAN: A Conversation with TPT's Chief Content Officer
Lesley Goldman joined Twin Cities PBS (TPT) in May of 2022 as its new Chief Content Officer. We sat down with Lesley to learn more about her background and her thoughts on what is to come for TPT.
ment that also educates and informs. I still loved journalism, but Newton’s Apple showed me that media making could be creative, entertaining, and fun. It felt groundbreaking. It let me see outside the box and think of storytelling in a new way.
CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT WHAT GOT YOU INTO MEDIA MAKING?
HOW DO YOU THINK YOUR EXPERIENCE WILL SHAPE YOUR WORK AT TPT?
I was always drawn to good storytelling. When I was younger, I was an avid reader. I loved the theater, tv, and film. I loved to immerse myself in places and people different from me. As I got older, I became enamored with non-fiction storytelling. The power of real-life human stories was enormous. I went to journalism school at the University of Wisconsin. During that time, I worked at the local PBS station in Madison. When I graduated, I got a job at TPT working for Newton’s Apple . And that changed my course. I saw that you could create entertain-
I never followed a traditional career trajectory. This means I approach my roles with a unique perspective....I not only have extensive experience in the development and production of content, I am driven to reach the right people on the right platform at the right time. That is the foundation of every content strategy, and it will be for mine as well. How people consume media is changing, and it is our job to make sure we continue to tell stories that resonate and reach the

right audiences. The biggest asset I have is the team I get to work with....It will be my job to empower and guide these leaders as we successfully navigate the new media landscape. I am already thrilled at the foundational effort we are putting in that will allow us to innovate and create multi- platform content in new and different ways.
strategic goals, we first need to be thought- ful about how we decide what content we creatively develop, where it will live, who we want to reach, and what outreach, engagement, and curriculum will be built around it.
WHAT SHOULD VIEWERS BE EXCITED ABOUT IN THE NEXT YEAR?
WHAT EXCITES YOU MOST ABOUT TPT?
There is quite a bit to be excited about this coming year. We are building on the success of Jim Crow of the North with the release of a digital series that tells more stories of the roots of racial disparities in Minnesota. We will also be bringing back some of our digital favorites for new seasons, such as Outside Chance and Worn Within . We will continue to provide amazing national educational kids programming with the release of new episodes of SciGirls and the beginning of production on our newest national kids' program, Mashopolis . Season 2 of America Outdoors , which we are fundraising for right now, is another big thing for viewers to watch for. We will also soon be in production on six new original Minnesota Experience documentaries. These will launch an exciting new era for Minnesota Experience as we explore ways to share the series on new platforms. Finally, as we look forward to the next few elections and the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, Almanac will continue to be Minnesota’s go-to source for reasoned political information. We will also be producing more content that explores what citizenship means and helps spur civic conversations across Minnesota.
TPT’s strategic goals are what excite me the most. TPT is one of the top performing public television stations in the country....We could stop and rest on our laurels, take a break, but that is not TPT’s style. TPT’s strategic goals are ambitious and will require the entire organization to work together like they never have before. It is exciting and a huge challenge. One I embrace, but I don’t take lightly. We need to continue to press forward with multi-platform efforts quickly and strategically. We also have huge opportunities to expand on one of our strengths: telling stories that have not been told by storytellers and creators that have not always had access to tell them. AS YOU LOOK AHEAD, WHAT DO YOU SEE CHANGING AND WHAT DO YOU SEE STAYING THE SAME WHEN IT COMES TO TPT’S CONTENT? I have no doubt we will continue to create the impressive content TPT is known for. Just this morning I woke up to learn we were nominated for 14 Regional Emmys. My role is to help elevate this great content while also exploring new platforms and new ways of storytelling. I will be looking at moving into emerging media while maintaining the integrity of programming that already exists. If we want to reach our

FACING SUICIDE: LET'S TALK DIGITAL SERIES
FACING SUICIDE LET’S TALK
Produced by Twin Cities PBS, Facing Suicide: Let’s Talk creates a space of understanding, hope, and action for young people whose lives have been impacted by suicide, including those who have experienced a suicidal crisis, and the loved ones, peers, and community who support them. In each episode host/therapist Shani Tran (below) brings a question to the group of individuals who have either dealt with suicidal ideation or an attempt, to get their insights and advice on how to navigate the complexities of a topic that can feel overwhelming. Each conversation revolves around how hope and healing have brought each individual to a place of stability in which they can manage their mental health, leverage their stories to connect with others, and continue to spread messages of hope.
EPISODES: • How Do I Ask For Help If I’m Thinking About Suicide? • How Can I Sustain My Mental Health When the World is Too Much? • How Do I Ask if Someone is Ok? • What Does Healing Look Like After Suicidal Ideation or an Attempt?
TPT's film, Facing Suicide , explores the powerful stories of those impacted by suicide — one of America’s most urgent health crises — and journeys to the front lines of research with scientists whose work is leading to better prevention and treatment.

Building on Henry Louis Gates, Jr.'s body of Black history programming on PBS, his new series draws a line to the modern moment and the lasting impacts of the contributions that Black men, women and communities have made on this place called America. Dr. Gates, who serves as the show's host, writer and executive producer, offers this soaring description: “For centuries, 'the Grapevine' has connected Black Americans in formal and informal networks - not just as a way of communicating, but of building and sustaining communities large and small. From churches to fraternal and sororal organizations to Black Twitter, this is the story of the making of Black America and how, in the making, a people did more than survive the onslaught of enslavement and segregation. They redefined America and its cultural gifts to the world." TPT 2 Tuesdays, starting October 4, 8 p.m.

When Can You Afford to Retire? By Christine D. Moriarty
Get a Pencil, Paper, and Your Tax Returns
Look at your recent Form 1040 tax return. It will show a complete income picture, beyond your salary, by including investment income, alimony, and annuity income. On line 9 will be the starting annual income number to use. On line 16, find the amount you have been paying in federal taxes. Find the state taxes you have been paying on your state form or your W-2 if you do not file a state income tax form. So, for now, deduct those amounts from your income. You still will pay taxes in retirement, although typically not as much. Find your annual savings. For retirement, these are on your W-2 or Schedule 1 of your 1040. If you save in a Roth or brokerage account, your annual statements will show that yearly total. Deduct all savings from the result in step #2. From your savings total in step #3, subtract any money in tax-deductible college savings accounts for your children or that will be used to pay off student loans, if they will be paid by the time you retire. Subtract from the result of step #4 any other large sums you spent for special events, such as a once-in-a-lifetime trip.

“I want to know if I can retire,” Marie said, sitting down across from me. She was typical of many pre-retirees everywhere, trying to figure out when they could stop working. When I was a financial planner, many of my clients thought this was an easy question. Instead, they got the question they did not anticipate from me: How much are you going to spend annually in retirement?
3
Understanding where your money goes today is critical to being prepared for your retirement years.
4
If you are five to ten years from retirement, you can use your current spending less the large savings you accumulate as your starting point. With a calculator in hand along with recent tax forms, real estate bills and investment statements, you will have a good estimate of what you need.
5
Understanding where your money goes today is critical to being prepared for your retirement years.
You now have a pretty good estimate of how much you spend annually, which is also called your outflow.

Honoring the Wishes of Those Who Didn’t Want a Funeral By Marijke Vroomen Durning
Funerals, shivas, memorials and other rites that mark a death are a fact of life. They bring together people to remember the deceased, while providing support and a sense of community. But more and more, people are opting not to have a traditional service or rite, choosing something different or even nothing at all. Those left behind may have strong feelings about those wishes, especially if the instructions run counter to their own ideas and beliefs. “I think it's important to honor the person who has died and their wishes,” said Candi Cann, an associate professor of religion at Baylor University. “But I also think it's important to honor the needs of the person who is left behind, and sometimes those [wishes] don't always match up.”
“Everybody has different ways they want to remember the people they love.”
As Laurie was mourning her husband's death, some people weren't happy with the lack of a funeral. They couldn't understand her desire to honor her husband's wishes, telling Laurie directly and indirectly that she wasn't “doing it right.”
Laurie (a pseudonym) lost her husband unexpect- edly earlier this year. He didn't want a funeral. When he died, Laurie felt she needed to respect his wishes but admitted this left her feeling isolated as she mourned. Laurie said that had she done the traditional Jewish funeral and shiva, a period of seven days when people visit, bring food, and provide support, she may not have felt so alone. “Friends rallied around. I felt very supported that way,” she said. “A few friends have taken us out for a meal, saying if we're not going to do shiva, we still want to eat something together.”
She is planning to hold a memorial, perhaps in the fall.
If someone doesn't want to have a funeral or memorial, they should still take into account the feelings and grief of those left behind, Cann said. “If you really care for [your loved ones] and want them to be healthy and to feel loved, then I think it's important to figure out what they want and need in order to grieve you and to move through the grief,” she said.
