Development Matters Inspiration, Investment, Involvement Inspiration
Our new Science building, designed by Grimshaw, architects well known for their inspirational buildings, will provide all our pupils with the very best oppportunites to study the three Sciences. It will be important in maintaining our position as a leading public school and will, of course, help us to continue to recruit the very best teachers and pupils. When the present Science block was opened in 1952, to replace the Victorian building seriously damaged during the War, there were fewer than 1,300 students at Dulwich. More than 60 years on, we have more than 1,500 pupils aged 7-18, with more than half of Upper School students choosing to study Science at A level. Despite there having been frequent improvements and re-orderings to the building over the years, the foundations are lean and the laboratories outmoded. The new building will transform the heart of the campus and give Science the status it deserves in our community.
It has been a full year since I first wrote in these pages and what a busy year it has been for both the Development Office and for the College. A number of milestones were arrived at, principally the granting of planning consent from Southwark Council for our new Science building. In a year which saw the College 1st XV win the Daily Mail RBS Cup final at Twickenham, watched by thousands of OAs, parents and pupils, we have also broadened our communications, increased our events programme and met and supported many OAs, helping them to keep in touch with each other and re-connect with the College. The College and the Governors have continued to monitor and support Development activities and to assist the Development Office in fundraising. I would like to thank the members of the Development Strategy Committee in particular for the active part they have played in preparing us to launch our capital campaign for Science.
