2022-2023 Reading and Entertainment Season News

Hello MIYC Members! I hope you are having a wonderful summer respite and have set aside time to enjoy your ‘Summer Reads.’ I’m taking this opportunity to share some exciting news in preparation for our 2022-2023 Reading and Entertainment Season. I have been receiving requests for an expanded monthly Book Club and Movie Matinee offerings. Our current Book Club will continue featuring Classics and contemporary novels and meet on the LAST Thursday of the Month, January – May. We hope that if we can hire enough staff, we will be able to add a new Book Club, which will feature non-fiction and historical novels and meet on the SECOND Thursday each month. I want to ask for your input on books for discussion. I am also requesting that you, as Members and participants, volunteer to be the presenter for the book(s) you suggest for discussion. These books will get top priority for selection. For the non-claimed book suggestions, we will vote to determine the list and find a presenter. I will work with you to create the PowerPoint presentation and run the ‘Show!’ And for some more great news - Past Commodore Jeff Comeaux has volunteered to coordinate a new Matinee Movie Group, staff and calendar permitting! We will need to determine a day and time for the Monthly Movies. We have these suggestions - a luncheon presentation, a before-dinner matinee, or maybe even a Sunday afternoon. We plan on using a similar structure for the presentation – a before-movie explanation of the plot, characters, cinematography, and twists for which to watch. And a post-viewing discussion. We need to reserve our time for this on our MIYC calendar ASAP. This is your Book Club and Movie Matinee experience, and I am requesting your input to assist in structuring and scheduling these events. We have scheduled a planning session for December 8 at noon, and I hope you’ll plan on attending. We are looking forward to an interesting, informative, and fun Book and Movie experience this Season! Getting to Know You Our Executive Chef Bradley Reich

Brad was born in Rochester NY, and has also lived in Raleigh, NC, West Palm Beach, FL, and now Naples. He is married, and has a daughter Ashley who lives in Manhattan, NY, and a son Noah, who lives in Naples, FL. When not busy at the Club, he enjoys time at home with his family. Other than English, he speaks a little Spanish.

Brad Reich

Brad has owned his own restaurant in West Palm Beach, FL called Salad World Grill and Deli from 2018 until 2022. He also has worked for the J.W. Marriott here on Marco Island, as well as being the Chef for the Rookery and Hammock Bay Golf Courses. He is a self-described “Foodie” at heart and enjoys going out and exploring all the trends of foods and seeing how other chefs are doing. He will be bringing what he feels is his best skill – his passion for food – to our Marco Island Yacht Club and will continue to create his best dishes for our members and guests. In the next year, Brad aspires to be recognized as one of the top chefs for private clubs in Florida. Brad’s favorite vacation locations are Caribbean spots, and he would also like to visit Italy to learn more about that style of culinary art. He enjoys all kinds of music; books, including those of Chef Gordon Ramsey; Movies like Training Day; TV series such as Sons of Anarchy; Card games like Blackjack, Gin Rummy, Uno; Board Games like Backgammon.

His personal motto? “Stay hungry my friends.”

Getting to Know You Director of Food and Beverage Youssef Oualidi

Born in Casablanca, Morocco, Youssef has lived in a variety of places worldwide, including Frankfurt, Germany, Atlanta, GA, and in Florida – Orlando, Tampa, Ft. Lauderdale, and now, Naples. As well as English, he is fluent in French and Arabic, and a bit of German. He is married, and the father of three boys, aged 16, 19, and 24.

Youssef Oualidi

Youssef holds a degree in Hospitality Management. His prior job experience includes Walt Disney World, Marriott International, Noble House Hotels and Resorts, and Northwood Hospitality Group. He feels he will bring balance and leadership to our Club, spending his time engaging with members and employees, focusing on guest satisfaction, employee engagement, and positive financial results. In the next couple of years he plans to elevate our Members’ Food and Beverage experience and have the MIYC achieve Top Platinum Level recognition. In his leisure time, Youssef enjoys watching soccer, basketball, and football. He also enjoys Rock & Roll and classical music; movies like Grease, Face/Off, Old School, and going to the beach. He enjoys good bread pudding with ice cream! His dream vacation is to visit Tahiti and Bora Bora. The causes he cares about include the American Cancer Society and St. Jude Children’s Hospital. His personal motto?

months. The addition of the H2B visa employees will help improve our service levels during the peak season. We have been successful in identifying eight individuals that will perform selected tasks in our club including:

It's October! I have to say it is hard to believe October is here already! October is the beginning of our new fiscal year. And in October, we begin welcoming the Club members who have been away for much of the Summer. At the Club, we have been working hard to get ready for the coming year. As is the case each year, we have spent much of the month of September cleaning and freshening the Clubhouse. Floors and carpets have been cleaned. Outside areas have been power washed. The kitchen has had its annual deep clean. And all areas have had a quick clean to make sure we are ready to host our members and guests this fall! There are also a lot of activities that have been underway to get ready for the coming season. The most significant, and one I know many members are waiting for, is getting our elevator back in operation. The crew started work on the project at the beginning of September. We are expecting the work to be done by the time the Club reopens. However, as is the case with many things in this crazy post-Covid economy, the circuit boards are on back order. The circuit boards are the 'brains' of the system. The company is working diligently with their supplier to solve this issue. However, we may see a delay of a few weeks before the project is fully completed. We have also been working on a project to bring in up to eight workers known as H2B visa employees. You have seen these types of employees at many food service establishments in our area. The special H2B visa classification allows foreign workers to work in the U.S. for a defined period. Many of these individuals work in the hospitality industry up North during the summer and in Florida during the winter

cooking in the kitchen, serving and food runners. General Manager Carrie has been working closely with the Human Resources Committee to identify individuals and make sure we have all our paperwork completed to satisfy government requirements. We expect to have these individuals on staff starting November 1, and they will stay through the end of April 2023. Design and planning activities related to the Clubhouse renovation project have also accelerated during the past few months. As I have noted in meetings and other communications, we expect to have a project review at the Annual Meeting in November that will address the renovation project objectives, the financing plan, and proposed schedule. We will be asking the membership to approve proceeding with the project. Look for a series of 'Chairman's Emails” in the next month to give you more information on the project. We are all looking forward to a very exciting year. The member events calendar is full, the member cruises look fantastic, the food being prepared by our new Chef is awesome, and the special interest groups all have a season full of activities planned. We look forward to seeing you back this fall and enjoying the Club! Dave Everitt

It seems as though, when we weren’t really paying close attention, Summer slipped swiftly away. Back in June, a long season of napping in hammocks, reading good books, and lazy days of nothing in particular stretched before us. The Good Life beckoned, what the Italians call, “Dolce far Niente”, the sweetness of doing nothing…

Wait a minute, we’re MIYC Members, we don’t sit around doing nothing – our lives are full of action and purpose. We travel, visit friends, see family, have picnics, head North to measure the growth of grandchildren and admire their latest artwork. Some of us remained on Marco Island this summer to play cards, Canasta, Mexican Train Dominoes, Bridge, go fishing, go boating, dine out in restaurants blessedly free of snowbirds, socialize, and enjoy Happy Hour at the Club in a Covid-free environment at long last. Kelley and I had the pleasure of visiting several energetic Members this year at their summer homes. We started with Roy and Kathy Hershberger in Asheville, North Carolina, who gave us great tips on the wine and shopping scene around Asheville, and joined us for a great lunch in the Biltmore Village, next to Biltmore Estate. From Asheville, we headed up to the Virginia Wine Country, where there are a number of ambitious wineries with lovely tasting rooms, gourmet restaurants, charming B&B’s and live music. Some of them even have pretty good wine; they are working on that aspect… Next, we spent the month of August on Mackinac Island, where there are no cars, only horses and buggies, bikes, and two golf courses. We did lots of biking, got to know several horses by their first names, and played golf every other day. The plan was to meet Dave Randall and Shelly Derrough on the island when they flew in on their airplane, but Dave and Shelly ended up traveling to their new boat instead, aboard which they are as of this writing, bringing her down from Connecticut to Marco Island. After Mackinac, we stopped by Dominic and JoAnn Sergi’s home in southeastern Wisconsin, where we were treated to a lovely afternoon of boating on three interlocking lakes aboard the Sergi’s luxurious pontoon. We then retired to their beautiful lakefront home, in which we were served a sumptuous gourmet dinner. If I hadn’t had that second helping, I would have been up for a game of Pickleball after dinner, on their brand-new home court. Instead, we just relaxed and admired a perfect lakeside sunset.

Next up was in the far north of Wisconsin, at Todd and Michelle Nelson’s wooded retreat on Big St. Germain Lake. It’s a long and winding road into the far north woods, and the Nelsons graciously allowed us to stay with them over Labor Day Weekend. Their house may be far away from the city, but it has every civilized comfort. Todd served a welcome glass of champagne on the lake to the girls aboard their Waverunners. As the weekend progressed, we enjoyed Bloody Marys for brunch, vintage wine for dinner, and cognac and cigars around the firepit after sundown. At this writing, our final stop is Minneapolis, where we await the birth of our second grandchild. As Commodore, I felt it was my duty to sample the hospitality of a few Members this summer, and to report back to you that, judging from this sample, our Members are the most gracious, welcoming, friendly and fun-loving bunch of folks I’ve ever known. Thanks to all of you for making our particular summer fabulous, and we look forward to seeing all our Members back at the Club in October. Our first Signature Event of the year is HOMECOMING - our Welcome Back to Marco Island Yacht Club. Remember the days when school was reopening and you would be so excited to see your ol’ buddies. Well, we are going to recapture that spirit. Join us dressed as a sports player, a cheerleader, a teacher or a nerd. Or, just come as you are. We are planning a fabulous Homecoming dinner following cocktails. Then a night of dancing to the tunes of Wendy Renee, SW Florida’s premier songstress. We will have the proverbial “ bonfire”; school pictures of your fellow members; a crowning of the Homecoming King and Queen (random drawing out of the hat) and entertainment by some talented members. Don’t forget to forward a school picture of yourself to Pam Dorr. These will be displayed without names so we can guess ‘who you were’. Email pictures to Pam at AGM@marcoIslandyachtClub.net. Or you can mail your photos to the club in Pam’s name. If you will be in Marco two weeks before our event on October 29, drop the pictures off to Pam. This is just the start of our fun-filled event calendar. We will have events each month including a Talent Show (MIYC’s Got Talent), a comedian, Holiday Gala etc. So, come back soon so we can get the party started.

I want to begin my column for this issue by thanking the Club’s “Mary Sunshine,” our member Mary McKeown. When a Club member experiences a life-changing event, our own Mary McKeown makes sure that the Club sends the appropriate card to let that member know that the membership cares. Mary has handled this duty for years, so Mary, THANK YOU from all of us for brightening our days! Jason Brooke is a three-month trial member as he purchased the membership at the American Cancer Society’s Imagination Ball. Thank you for supporting one of our favorite organizations, Jason! Community Support Speaking of Community Support, be sure to see the advertisement for the Love of Cats Gala, another organization we support. Jan & Jim Rich are members who created the organization. The fundraiser is Saturday, January 28 th and will be held at the Club. Check with Jan if you are interested in attending this casino event! We are still collecting for the Food Pantry in the lobby. Keep bringing in non-perishable items and we will make sure they get over to the Food Pantry. Stay tuned as we will have some more information about how we will support Toys for Tots in the November Issue of Anchorlines ! Human Resources Committee

As we transition into what will no doubt be a busy “season” we are reminded of the importance of our Mission Statement: to “provide an extraordinary Member experience of boating, social events and dining in a warm and beautiful club setting where fun and friendship flourish.” In order to provide that extraordinary Member experience, we need to be fully staffed with qualified and motivated people. To that end, we are in the final stages of securing seven front-of-the house H2B visa workers for the season. We have taken special care to ensure these “in country” workers are from clubs and restaurants up north, so they come to us experienced and English- speaking. Carrie and Youssef are planning a focused onboarding protocol for these new staff beginning November 1 so they can hit the ground running. Please give these folks a warm welcome when you are at the Club! Speaking of qualified staff, please also welcome our new dishwasher Ofisyel Hyppolite and cook Christina Rodriguez. Chloe and Brian in reception continue to offer welcoming smiles to members and guests. In continuing our efforts to be the “employer of choice” in SW Florida, we have negotiated favorable rates on health insurance for our staff with a new added benefit: an Employee Assistance Plan (EAP) which, among other things, provides free

confidential access to financial counselling, health care counselors for handling stress and emotional issues, and help from specialists on work/life balance challenges.

In focusing on Member experience, I was intrigued by a recent newspaper editorial which opined on the hospitality industry recovering from the COVID era. The editorial writer suggested that strategies which relied on menu prices, smaller menus, work schedules, etc. focused exclusively on dollars and cents. The author went on: “Someone forgot to mention hospitality, the unqualifiable element that attracts us to one food palace, neighborhood joint or food truck over another. Hospitality is the unsung hero of the dining experience, as essential as any spreadsheet item.” Perhaps the writer’s most interesting comment was: Hospitality is a relationship, not a delivery system…. What if we looked up to see exactly who handed us the menus, and expressed gratitude for a job well done. We are all looking forward to an “extraordinary Member experience” this season, enhanced by a “hospitality” in which we all take part and enjoy!

Safety & Training

“Clean That Strainer!”

In this issue I will be discussing an integral part of any boat that has inboard engines or air conditioning: Sea strainers, also known as raw-water strainers, provide your boat with a layer of defense against the ocean. These strainers filter out the junk and debris that your boat uses to cool its engine(s). Also, since many of your boat’s appliances such as your air conditioners are also water-cooled rather than air-cooled like your house refrigerator or air conditioner, they must rely on water being sucked in from outside your boat, circulated around cooling coils, and pumped back overboard.

It is extremely important to monitor and maintain your strainers, as sea life, algae, sea grass, barnacles and even plastic bags are often sucked up or even grow within the strainers, eventually clogging lines and preventing the cooling circulation from happening. This can eventually lead to overheating and complete shutdown of systems. Following is an easy-to-understand step by step procedure in maintaining your sea strainers (copied from “Dream Chaser” website): • “Turn off the device that is using the water cooling. Example, air conditioner, engines, etc. • Close the seacock that prevents water from coming in the boat when the lines are open. • Slowly unscrew and remove the lid of the sea strainer canister. • Remove the strainer basket and clean with hot water and a brush. • Clean the inside of the screen canister (I recommend a small round toilet brush dedicated to this task). • Put the screen back in the housing and loosely put on the canister cover. • Open the seacock part way and be ready to close the strainer housing tightly as water starts to come out. This is to remove air from the system and is an important step. • Open the seacock all the way and turn on the device. • Check to make sure you have water discharging from the boat in the proper location. • If there is no water discharging from the boat, turn off the device and investigate a possible air lock in the system.” I personally check all of my sea strainers every seven to ten days. This is especially important during the summer when the water temperature is high. Also, if your boat is moored in a wet slip where there is an active current, algae and barnacles build up much faster than in a cooler, slow moving current. Although frowned upon by some marine air conditioner service people, for the past 20 years I have added 8-10 one- inch bromine tablets to my AC strainers on a regular basis. In doing so, I have virtually eliminated the build- up of any barnacle growth on the glass housing or strainers themselves. Bromine is much less corrosive than chlorine and acts as a wonderful deterrent to any unwanted growth. These can be purchased at any pool supply company or retailer such as Home Depot or Lowe’s. The cost for a 1 ½ pound container will vary from $15 to $20. However, you can purchase a 5-pound container from SpaDepot.com for just $39.95. Remember, a clean strainer is a happy strainer! Marketing & Communications

Over the summer, The Marketing & Communications Committee met and discussed advertising rates in Anchorlines . We agreed to increase the rates slightly and provide members with reduced pricing benefits. All advertisers were notified of the increased rate, and only two have decided not to renew for the 2023 fiscal year.

In June, MIYC was approached to participate in the Best of Naples contest, sponsored by USA Today, in the Yacht Club category. We entered and encouraged members to vote for us daily through 2 email campaigns. As I write this, we are waiting to hear how we did! We have had requests for short videos on how to use the App and the website for making reservations. They should be ready by the time you read this newsletter. Watch for an email to let you know how to access them! Please let me know if you have suggestions for videos or other ways that might be helpful to other members! Speaking of the App, have you downloaded it to your phone? I think it’s fantastic and easy to use. Please let me know if you’d like a lesson, and we can Zoom or meet in person at the Club. And, one new feature has been added – you can now “sync” your reservations to your calendar on your phone. When looking at your reservations, click on the calendar inside the two arrows, and your reservations will download to your calendar on your phone!

Another nice feature – you can now send an email to your fellow members and friends when you add them to your reservation! If you include a member in your reservation, it will automatically populate their email. If you invite a non-member, you can add the email in the provided box. As the season approaches, I would like to take a moment to remind members about our unique deal with Freedom Boat Club. Freedom Boat Club is an international organization with more than 300+ locations in the US, Canada, and Europe. not limit you to only one location or region. There are many benefits to this, especially with the limited dock space available in SWFL. Members have the option to take a cruise on the Marco River or out fishing without having the added burden of vessel maintenance, dockage fees, and the dreaded post-cruise clean up. Here at MIYC, we offer a unique joint membership program that allows you to join FBC at a discounted rate. Our yacht club members have exclusive use of two brand new center console boats: a Bayliner Trophy 22 and a Cobia 24. The boats are both kept onsite and are available for booking through Freedom Boat Club’s app and managed by our staff at Riverside Marina. Reservations Please! Please remember to make your reservations for dinner and events at the Club at least two days before the event. Chef Brad and his Staff like to be prepared in order to have the right amount of food and beverage. Also, when you make your reservation for a specific time, please be prepared to be shown to your table at that time. We appreciate your help as this also helps the kitchen Staff serve you in a timely manner.

Aquafit at MIYC Aquafit classes take place at the MIMA pool at 10 am on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Don't miss this opportunity to enjoy water aerobics - a low-impact activity that takes the pressure off your bones, joints and muscles. Water also offers natural resistance, which can help strengthen your muscles and you can add resistance devices to burn more calories! Exercising in the pool provides the toning and cardiovascular benefits of exercise on dry land with less strain and stress plus it allows for a greater range of motion helping with flexibility and balance. And most importantly, it is enjoyable fun! As with any other exercise routine, just be certain you get medical clearance from your health care provider before taking the plunge. Nametag Replacement Policy • Equity members are allowed two replacements of nametags before being charged $10 per replacement. • All other memberships are allowed one free nametag replacement before being charged a $10 fee.

Equity, Full and Trial Members , please note that during season (mid-January until after Easter) you must travel by boat to Naples Yacht Club and Naples Sailing & Yacht Club. We ask their members to do the same due to increased membership and limited parking during season.

Dress Code: Gentlemen, remember to wear collared shirts for dining in the evening. Also, jackets are required at Wine & Dine unless otherwise noted.

Cell Phone Usage in the Clubhouse Dining Areas : Please limit your cell phone usage to texting and searching when in the dining areas of the Club. Conversations should take place under the Port Cochere.

Mariners Fund The Mariners Fund is a way to finance extraordinary MIYC needs; things outside of the normal budget; Club enhancements that will make the member experience better and up to date. For example, the Burgee Bar renovation was made possible entirely by member donations. The bar was expanded, new drop-down window covers were installed and attractive curtains and valances were added. The Mariners Fund also paid to upgrade the Club’s sound system and supported the installation of a new dimmer system to enhance lighting in the Harbour Room. All these improvements were made possible by the generous support of our members. A donation to the Mariners Fund is a symbol of MIYC member commitment. How Can I Donate? You can make a general donation or donate for a specific project. We have identified a number of needs and wishes, which are listed in a binder just below the recognition plaque in the lobby. If you’d like to donate, please download the Mariners Fund Donation Form, on which you can indicate the project you wish to support, the amount of donation and how you wish to pay (separate check, credit card or Club monthly statement.) If there is something special you would like to see happen and would like to financially support, please let any member of the Mariners Fund Committee know.
