JOURNAL T he F uture I s N ow Spring Hill | Clearwater | Brandon | Weston Opportunity in Stem Cell Therapy

As co-founder and one of the primary physicians at NSI Stem Cell, I have been fortunate to be on the leading edge of stem cell therapy in the United States. A majority of the protocols we abide by at NSI were developed by myself and Dr. Eric Edgerton after we recognized how important stem cells would be to the future of health care. But when I say health care, I don’t mean just the treatment. At NSI, we look at treatment from a different perspective. It’s not simply about treating a patient’s conditions and moving on. It’s about promoting positive health habits while treating and managing a condition or disease. Too often, health care providers will focus solely on the condition they’re treating. They may prescribe a medication or suggest surgery, and that’s it. There isn’t an emphasis on

continued care and living a healthy lifestyle. If you want to improve your life, you can’t just treat the condition. You have to change the way you live to ensure a continued positive outcome. That’s how we operate at NSI. Through the type of health care we provide, we are constantly looking for new and improved ways to heal and promote health. Throughout my career, I’ve always been focused on lifestyle medicine, and in that, I’ve recognized the challenge in keeping patients compliant. The fact is, to see truly astounding results — as we often do at NSI — you must change certain habits, whether it’s eating healthier, getting more physical activity, or both.

cells for several years, and I continue to be astounded.

However, I’m more excited to see future stem cell therapies unfold in the coming years. There are many neurological conditions we may be able to treat and cure. There is an increasing body of literature suggesting we may be able to apply stem cell therapy to heal spinal cord injuries. This is an area of medicine that doctors and researchers have long struggled with. The future holds a lot of hope. In many respects, we are already living in that future. A handful of years ago, we knew little about stem cells and their potential. Today, we are in the early stages of an incredible new technology. We are pushing what is possible and learning so much. And as a result, we’re helping many people. If you or a loved one is not getting the care you need from traditional health care sources, you have a new option. You no longer have to rely on the current health care system and pharmaceutical methods of treatment. Stem cell therapy represents the future of health care, but you don’t have to wait for the future to take advantage of the many opportunities it offers.

The future holds a lot of hope.

Working with stem cell therapies comes with a unique set of rewards, particularly with our patients. The outcomes and the way therapies affect individuals is, at times, mind-boggling. I have seen so many remarkable and

THE TRUTH ABOUT TURMERIC T he S ecrets of the Y ellow S pice

For thousands of years, turmeric has been a staple in curries as well as a spice renowned for its ability to treat a vast number of ailments. When dried and powdered, the turmeric plant turns a distinctive sunny yellow. Native to Southeast Asia, in recent years turmeric has become a sort of “spice-of- all-trades.” Throughout North America, people are adding turmeric to various foods and using it to treat everything from arthritis to

heartburn. Anecdotal evidence suggests that the spice can treat just about every kind of inflammation in the body, whether it’s joint pain or a headache. Have a stomachache or nausea? Try turmeric. Have a mild rash or burn on your skin? Try turmeric. There are even a number of current studies looking into the effectiveness of turmeric as a treatment option for those with diabetes and dementia. When one substance is purported to have near-magical healing powers, you have to remember to take it with an additional dose of skepticism. Can one spice really cure everything that ails you? Let’s ask science. Researchers have identified over 20 distinct compounds that work similar to NSAIDs (such as aspirin and ibuprofen). Of

the enzymatic reaction that triggers inflammation. One of these compounds is called curcumin, which is often considered the active ingredient in turmeric. An article published in the medical journal Nutrition and Cancer found that, by weight, pure turmeric powder contains 3.14 percent curcumin. However, clinical trials of curcumin have produced less-than-stellar results. A comprehensive review of 120 studies of curcumin, published in 2017 in the Journal of Medicinal Chemistry, found no evidence that the compound produced positive results as an anti-inflammatory or antioxidant. In fact, researchers found curcumin to be an, “unstable, reactive, non-bioavailable compound.” What does this mean for people who use turmeric for its medicinal properties? If it works for you, continue to use it. If you’ve thought about adding it to your diet, give it a try. It’s safe to use and studies have shown virtually no toxicity, even in high doses.

those compounds, six are COX-2 inhibitors. COX-2 is an enzyme that causes inflammation and pain in the body.

In short, these six compounds help block

NOMORE KNEE PAIN! E dward ’ s S teps T oward K nee R ejuvenation Edward W. came to NSI Stem Cell when the functionality of his knee deteriorated. “My knee kept giving out on me,” Edward says. “I needed to do something, and I’m 90½. Because of my age, the doctors would not operate and put in an artificial knee.”

One day, Edward came across stem cell therapy while reading the paper. “I didn’t know much about it,” he says. “In fact, I didn’t know anything about it!”

After receiving no answers from his doctor, Edward took the next step. “I made an appointment, came in, and talked with a doctor,” he says. “I liked what he said, so I decided to go ahead and have the stem cell [therapy] done. “About three months ago, they did the procedure, and since then, my knee has felt a lot better,” Edward says. “It hasn’t been giving out on me. I have no pain. I have more control of the use of my leg, and I am pleased!”

A utoimmune D isorders Did you know that a critical element in managing the symptoms of autoimmune disorders is a healthy lymphatic system? This important system branches throughout the body to protect us from disease and inflammation caused by illness. The system includes lymph vessels and nodes, as well as tonsils, the adenoids, the spleen, and the thymus. Ways to Help Autoimmune disorders can stress the lymphatic system and produce symptoms of chronic fatigue, swollen lymph nodes, muscular aches and pains, and joint pain. Additionally, an unhealthy lymphatic system can lead to increased frequency of sore throats, colds, viral diseases, and infections. It can also induce symptoms of autoimmune disorders such as fibromyalgia and arthritis, and has even been connected to the formation of cancer. What can you do to keep your lymphatic system healthy? Whether you’re battling an autoimmune disorder or your system is functioning normally, there are steps you can take to support your lymphatic system and give it a boost. 1. Adopt an anti-inflammatory diet. Processed food products increase stress on the digestive, circulatory, and immune systems. Turn your attention to high-antioxidant, nutrient-dense foods, including green, leafy veggies, broccoli, berries, and fish rich in omega-3.

2. Exercise. All types of normal exercise, including walking routines, are great for the lymphatic system and for controlling the symptoms of autoimmune disorders, but it’s hard to beat yoga, as well as high-intensity interval training! 3. Massage therapy/foam rolling. Massage is an excellent therapy to help alleviate and prevent swelling, discomfort, and the buildup of fluids in body tissues. Foam rolling also works in a similar fashion, and it can easily be done at home. 4. Far infrared sauna. FIR light waves penetrate deep into tissues, promote cell regeneration, and increase sweat production. Sweating allows more toxins to be flushed from tissue. 5. Supplements that support the lymphatic system. Essential oils, lemon, myrrh, oregano, cypress, and frankincense oils are particularly good for the improvement of blood flow and the reduction of swollen lymph nodes. 6. HIVAMAT therapy. Short for (HI) Histological (VA) Variable (MA) Manual (T) Technique, this therapy is especially beneficial in relieving pain caused by lymphatic issues. 7. Stem cell therapy. This addresses lymphatic system dysfunction on multiple levels, replacing unhealthy cells with new healthy tissue, repairing damage, and releasing anti-inflammatory properties. It’s a therapy that literally heals from the inside out.

Thanksgiving at America’s Resort Page 4

T hanksgiving at A merica ’ s R esort CARVE YOUR TURKEY AT THE GREENBRIER

This Thanksgiving, many Americans plan to go over the river and through the woods to sleep on the air mattress at grandmother’s house. But your family Thanksgiving doesn’t have to be crowded and uncomfortable. For generations, The Greenbrier Resort in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, has brought families together for a weekend of true American elegance. The local hot springs have been popular with travelers since 1778, but The Greenbrier didn’t come to life until 1913. The sprawling 710-room national landmark sits on 11,000 acres of rolling hills and has been described as “‘Monte Carlo’ meets ‘Gone With the Wind.’” The blend of Colonial decor and Hollywood Regency flourishes make guests feel as if they have stepped back in time, while still offering all the modern amenities. Mom and Grandma relax in the spa, Grandpa enjoys a round of golf, the siblings all go off-roading

in a Jeep, and later, the whole family faces off in a game of laser tag. With 55 leisure activities offered at the resort, make every day as busy or as relaxing as you want before enjoying a gourmet dinner at one of the resort’s six full-time restaurants. The Greenbrier is a dream getaway anytime of the year, but America’s resort really goes all-out for the traditional American holiday, Thanksgiving. Family members from every generation can find something fun to do before the family gathers together for the massive Thanksgiving brunch in The Greenbrier’s Colonial Hall. The award-winning culinary brigade serves up Thanksgiving classics, like soft rolls and roasted turkey, alongside marinated mussels and ricotta tortellini. Make time for the horse-drawn carriage ride and evening gala, and you have the perfect Thanksgiving.
