THE SLOVERS DO THE RHINE DAVE & JOAN DO EUROPE IN STYLE!

Last year Joan and I decided to take a cruise through parts of Europe. We chose Emerald Waterways “Jewels of the Rhine” in a river cruise ship. We started in Amsterdam, a fascinating 700 year old city of picturesque canals, world class museums, theatres and cafés. The afternoon was spent sailing on a canal boat tour, through the Dutch countryside passing windmills and through locks towards the Rhine River. This night the Captain hosted a gala dinner, a spectacular event of fine food and of course....local wine. An amazing start to a cruise through 4 different European countries! By day 3 we were cruising along the Rhine to Cologne, founded by the Romans, the city is one of Germany’s oldest and is famous for its magnificent World–Heritage listed Gothic Cathedral. There were many different museums and galleries including a Roman artifact museum. We were treated to a local Kölsch beer style!! On to Koblenz, a 2000 year old town, situated at the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle rivers. We visited the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress before sailing through the spectacular Rhine Gorge, passing the infamous Lorelei statue and Pfalzgrafenstein Castle, which was built on an island in the middle of the river as a medieval toll station. Countless vineyards and medieval castles line the shores of this section of the river, with photo opportunities at every bend.

We then boated down to Mannheim and took in the medieval town of Heidelberg including the impressive castle which overlooks the town. It was in Kehl, where we docked and transferred by coach across the river to Strasbourg, the capital city of the Alsace Region in France. A guided walking tour here included the Grande Ile, the historical city centre and UNESCOWorld Heritage Site known for its medieval black and white timber framed buildings, old tanning houses, baroque sandstone buildings, canals and river locks. What a fabulous afternoon! The next part of the tour took us to Breisach with a visit to the Vogtsbauernhof Museum, an open air exhibition of sixteenth century life, featuring a number of reconstructed Black Forest farms. We also had a guided hike through a typical Black Forest village, followed by some tasting of authentic Black Forest Cake! Finally we sailed across the border to Basel, Switzerland, and after breakfast we disembarked from the ship and transferred to Geneva en route to the second week’s cruise down the Rhone river. A tour starting in Lyon, France that tantalized the taste buds with more excellent food and fabulous wines. Stay tuned for the next leg of the journey! Dave and Joan

When Your Motion is Lost When you lose the movement of the hip, knee or ankle joints, your muscles have to take on the abnormal strain. This leads to common aches and pains experienced by millions of people. Many people feel that medication will help solve their hip, knee or leg pain. While medication can help to decrease inflammation and pain, it cannot address the root cause of the problem. Most pain in the hip, thigh, knee or leg comes from poor flexibility, strength or coordination. Treating Leg Pain To determine the source of your leg pain, our physiotherapists examine your walking, squatting, joint movement, comparing the strength and mobility of the joints. A comprehensive treatment plan, including special hands-on techniques, is made to achieve the fastest relief and the longest lasting results. Thehipandknee jointsare incrediblemarvelsof thehuman body. At times they have to withstand up to 6 times your body weight in force. The knee joint is the second most complicated joint in the body and has to move in many directions including forward, backward, side to side and rotation. These different movements are called accessory motions and are needed for normal walking, running and bending. When you experience pain in the side of the hip, groin, thighorknee, youmayhavedifficultywith theseaccessory motions. Prolonged sitting, injuries, arthritis and disease can affect accessory motions. With every day use, tissues around thehip andknee joints tighten, leading toagradual loss of motion. This causes a lot of pressure to build up on specific parts of the joints.

DOES ARTHRITIS PAIN GRIND YOU DOWN?

Millions of people suffer through arthritis pain every day, taking Ibuprofen and stronger medications to numb the pain and address the ongoing inflammation. The definition of arthritis is joint inflammation, however the term has acquired a wider meaning. Arthritis is now used as a generic term for osteoarthritis and other conditions that affect joints. The pattern, severity, and location of arthritis symptoms can vary depending on the specific form of the disease. Typically, arthritic conditions are characterized by pain and stiffness in and around one or more joints. The symptoms can develop gradually or suddenly. Certain rheumatic conditions can also involve the immune system and various internal organs of the body. Physiotherapy is an important part of the ongoing treatment for arthritis. Physiotherapy strengthens, stretches and stabilizes muscles surrounding affected joints providing needed support. Relieving Joint Pain Exercising is important to help reduce joint pain and stiffness. Light to moderate-intensity physical activity can actually prevent a decline in function, even restoring health. However, some people with arthritis may be reluctant to exercise because of joint pain after activity. You can take various steps to relieve pain, such as heat and cold therapy, or pain relievers, making it easier for you to exercise and stay active. In addition to physiotherapy, choose non–impact exercises such as bicycling, swimming or water exercise. Furthermore, resaerch shows that even modest weight loss combined with exercise is more effective in decreasing pain and restoring function than either weight loss or exercise alone.
