Leaving high school is an exciting time, especially if you know what career you want to follow and how to get there - but if you don’t, it can be a little daunting. That’s where we can help. Whatever stage you’re at on your career journey (or even if you haven’t started yet) our experienced Careers & Progression Team will support you in making the right choices about your future. I KNOW WHAT I WANT TO STUDY! What to study at college is an important decision and it’s great that you know what you want to study. It is still worth taking time to research what qualifications are needed for your future career – do you need a degree? If so, can you complete a degree apprenticeship in that profession? Do you want or need to go to university? What are the university entry requirements? When you apply for college, you will be invited to attend an interview – this is a perfect opportunity for you to discuss your course and explore your career journey including apprenticeships and university.
I’M NOT SURE WHAT I WANT TO STUDY If you’re not sure what college course to apply for… here’s a few things to try…
• Attend a Preston College open event where you can visit as many curriculum areas as you like, speak to students and tutors, and see what’s on offer. Our open events are Wednesday 30 September 2026 (4-7pm), Saturday 7 November 2026 (10am-1pm) and Thursday 4 March 2027 (4-7pm) . Visit www.preston.ac.uk/open-events to register. • Visit www.prospects.ac.uk and give their career quiz try. It takes 10 minutes and will give you a list of careers that match your skills and personality. • Think about school and write down the following, which lessons are your favourite and why? Which are your least favourite and why? • You can contact our Recruitment and Careers Team by calling 01772 225774 or emailing guidance@preston.ac.uk and ask to speak with one of our dedicated Careers Advisors.
