EQUINE WELFARE
SUCCESS STORIES BY KE I TH HI LL I ER
In the past decade Racing Victoria has expanded its Off The Track Program into a rapidly growing list of new career opportunities for thoroughbred racehorses post-racing. Top off-the-track performers in different equestrian disciplines were recognised in Equestrian Victoria’s recent annual awards, highlighting their continued popularity amongst the equestrian fraternity. Thoroughbreds have been a mainstay of the Australian equestrian landscape for decades, popular with show riders, showjumpers, eventers and dressage riders alike– all disciplines that are overseen in this state by Equestrian Victoria (EV). Racing Victoria (RV) has sought to amplify this relationship in recent years, promoting the thoroughbred as the ideal equestrian athlete. RV’s Off The Track Program (OTT) has enjoyed a long and successful partnership with EV, which provides additional recognition and rewards for those equestrian riders who are succeeding with their OTT thoroughbreds across all equestrian disciplines and levels. The most recent EV awards were announced in November 2020, with categories including OTT Acknowledged Retrainer of the Year, OTT Showhorse of the Year, OTT Dressage Horse of the Year, OTT Jumping Horse of the Year, and OTT Eventing Horse of the Year. Last year’s Lady of Racing award winner Fiona McIntyre added a second major acknowledgement in 2020 for her outstanding dedication and commitment to the welfare and care of racehorses post-racing by claiming the OTTAcknowledged Retrainer of the Year. Balancing full-time work and her retraining commitments, Fiona has long been flying the flag for OTT horses as she is a passionate advocate for the thoroughbred and their post-racing careers, which she says are endless given the opportunity, time, and correct training. “Every racehorse can have a purposeful second career after they have retired from the track. It’s just a matter of finding the right fit for each individual horse in terms of vocation and matching “their
personality” to the right discipline, to provide the best possible opportunity to excel whether that be as a competition horse or simply a pleasure horse,” she said. Based just out of Geelong, Fiona has a great track record in retraining OTT thoroughbreds, teaming up with well-known racehorses including Sirmione and Precedence who competed in four Melbourne Cups for the late Bart Cummings. Australian Olympic eventing rider and Victoria Racing Club Ambassador Amanda Ross was awarded both the OTT Event Horse of the Year and OTT Dressage Horse of the Year for her work with mare Koko Popping Candy, or Zarzy, as she is affectionately known. While eventing is Amanda’s (and Zarzy’s!) primary focus, they compete in many dressage and show jumping competitions as part of their cross-training, leading to the Bianconi mare’s recognition in both the eventing and dressage categories. Adam Prime’s horse Saddle Up Smudge was named the OTT Jumping Horse of the Year. Adam, a teacher at St. Joseph’s secondary school in Echuca, paid $600 for the 10-year-old retired thoroughbred who raced four times as Praire Sky before retiring from racing in 2013.

EQUINE WELFARE
But Adam saw a fresh future for him. He saw a horse with attitude, presence, amazing movement with a balance of bravery, care and ability. He helped him develop quickly with his safe jumping technique that won him the 2018 thoroughbred event at Equitana, held at the Melbourne Showgrounds. As competition got tougher, Saddle Up Smudge got more relaxed and confident. Adam shares a common interest in equestrian riding with his wife Jervaise and sons Hamish, 16 and Darcy, 12. The family has an interesting nickname for the horse; they named him ‘Smudge’ because the star on his forehead is off centre. All the family shared the thrill of Smudge winning the OTT Jumping Horse of the Year award. Natalie McKay produced the OTT Show Horse of the Year, St Andrews (NZ), who finished his racing career under the care of Queensland trainer, Marcus Wilson, and had won more than $65,000 during his racing career. Queenslander Adam Oliver, a horseman with a respected eye for a show horse, told Fiona McIntyre he was a natural. Fiona, who also had a keen eye for a show horse prospect, agreed before St Andrews (NZ) had taken half a dozen strides. Ridden by his new owner Natalie McKay, he went on to become the Reserve Champion Hack at the Canberra Royal Show, won the OTT class at Equestrian Australia’s national horse and rider championships and won Reserve Champion Large Hack at Barastoc Horse of the Year at Werribee for the last two years. RV’s Post-racing Initiatives Officer Melissa Ware is passionate about the post-racing careers ahead for retired racehorses and is responsible for RV’s OTT program. “These awards give us a valuable opportunity to recognise the top achievers in each sport and celebrate the success of off-the-track thoroughbreds in all four disciplines. “The winners this year are all very accomplished in their chosen field and we are delighted to endorse their ongoing success,” Ware said.
RV continues its longstanding association with EV by extending its OTT naming rights sponsorship. OTT will sponsor more than 150 equestrian events in which 4,500 retired racing thoroughbreds will compete. Collectively former racehorses have made more than 15,000 appearances at Victorian equestrian events since OTT was established in 2012, proving just how valued these equine athletes are to the riders who love them.
THESE AWARDS GIVE US A VALUABLE
OPPORTUNITY TO CELEBRATE
THE SUCCESS OF OFF-THE-TRACK THOROUGHBREDS IN ALL FOUR DISCIPLINES.

PAGAN’S BIG PLANS
JOHNNY REACHES FOR THE STAR BY MICHAEL LYNCH
Denis Pagan had a dream come true when his horse Johnny Get Angry won the 2020 Victoria Derby. Now, he has his eyes on an even bigger prize – the Lexus Melbourne Cup. We find out his plans to get him there, and why it is all about the horse.
Success in one sporting sphere doesn’t guarantee that you will be a winner in another.
But the determination, planning, painstaking attention to detail and empathy with elite athletes – key qualities required to become an AFL premiership coach – are a strong platform for transitioning from one “game” to another. And Denis Pagan, the premiership-winning former North Melbourne mentor is certainly showing that neither age (he will be 74 in September) nor a late switch in professions is any barrier to success in the ultra-competitive world of racing. Pagan, who has a handful of horses in work alongside Troy Corstens at the latter’s Flemington base, says he is already “living the dream” having won the $1 million VRC Victoria Derby with his fan favourite Johnny Get Angry last year. But that dream could become ever more fantastical if Pagan’s plan to get “Johnny” to the greatest race of all, the Lexus Melbourne Cup, comes to fruition over the next few months. Pagan admits that he is taking an old-fashioned approach with his stable star, having tipped him out and spelled him for several months following his Derby triumph. In so doing he missed the chance to run in multi-million dollar derbies in Sydney, Adelaide and Brisbane, but the trainer is optimistic that his patience will be rewarded.
He is planning a “classic” Australian Cup preparation for the son of Tavistock, one that Bart Cummings, TJ Smith and Colin Hayes would recognise. Johnny Get Angry’s Cups campaign will kick off in the Aurie’s Star Handicap down the Flemington straight in early August – a race that many of the former champion trainers used to begin their Cups candidates preparation. He will, all being well, take in races like the Makybe Diva Stakes and Turnbull Stakes (both at Flemington) as lead-ups to the Caulfield Cup and, hopefully, the Melbourne Cup itself. “I think Hyperno might have won it (the Aurie’s Star) in 1979 for Bart. I know Rogan Josh (the 1999 Melbourne Cup winner) ran in it, I am sure George Hanlon used it a lot,” said Pagan.
PAGAN’S BIG PLANS
“I know training methods have changed, but it’s not going to do my bloke any harm and I think a run on the course proper, with matchday conditions, is only going to benefit my guy. “He is fit and ready to go, and he was going to have another trial anyway so he might as well run in a real race. He has only had seven starts so the experience will do him the world of good. While it will be too short for him, it will be great if we see him running on at the end doing his best work at the finish.” Regular rider Lachie King, the apprentice who triumphed aboard Johnny in the Derby, is out injured after a race fall at Wodonga so Pagan is looking for a temporary replacement in the Aurie’s Star. He is determined to reunite the partnership for the rest of the spring when King recovers.
“Lachie got injured at Wodonga, broke three ribs and smashed himself up so he will be out of action for a while.
“Lachie will be back on board as soon as he is fit. He has done that much work with my horses, not only Johnny Get Angry, but he has done a hell of a lot of work with Turn It Up Tommy (Pagan's Derby hopeful for this year) and he comes in every morning.
“I wouldn't get anybody who is as committed and loyal as Lachie, so he is first cab off the rank for me.”
Pagan’s high regard for the young stayer made it an easy decision not to run him in the autumn, to allow him time to develop with this spring in mind. “He had no injuries. He came in in the autumn and was in work for maybe six-and-a-half weeks and one morning he came out scratchy.
“I got the vet to look at him. She said, ‘nothing much wrong there, give him some anti-inflammatories’. But I didn’t want to do that. I just wanted to let nature take its course. “He doesn’t owe me a zak. I just tipped him out. Touch wood he is going along nicely now and has benefited. He’s stronger and he’s heavier, whether he is improved we don’t know. But he will have to, because he is going to be against some good open-class gallopers, and he will meet some very good stayers on the way through. “In this caper, like a lot of sports, it’s a game of inches. Everyone who looks at him says he looks well, but we will find out when we get to race day. And we are not really be able to answer that question until he gets up to 10 furlongs (2000 metres).”
GOOD LUCK EMMA AND ZIDANE!!
The VRC sends the best of luck to VRC Ambassador Emma Booth and her horse Mogelvangs Zidane as they prepare to take on the world at the Tokyo Paralympic Games later this month. The Para-dressage competition starts on Thursday 26 August and will be broadcast live across the Seven Network.

EQUESTRIAN AND THE OLYMPICS
BY SARAH MARINOS
Australian teams have performed with distinction in the modern era of Olympic history. Here we turn the spotlight on the equestrian events and the competitors who have achieved success. In 1956, the world came to Melbourne. More than 3000 competitors from far-flung parts of the globe converged on the city to take part in the Games of the XVI Olympiad. They were an Olympics of firsts. The 1956 Olympics were the first time the event was held outside Europe or North America, and they were the first Games held in the Southern Hemisphere. They were also the first Olympics with live television broadcasts that brought the events into Australian lounge rooms. And they were the first Games in which athletes united to walk together as part of the official closing ceremony. The Melbourne Olympics were also a first in another respect. By the time the opening ceremony unfolded on Thursday 22 November, and by the time Australian athlete Ron Clarke lit the cauldron, one of the sports had already been completed. Because of Australia’s strict quarantine laws, the equestrian events had to be held in another country, and so they took place in Stockholm, Sweden, five months before the official Games began. The Australian team narrowly missed out on medals that time around, the team placing fourth. At the following Olympics in Rome in 1960, the Australians struck gold – literally. Since then Australia has built on its equestrian successes, particularly in eventing. Australia’s first equestrian team left Melbourne in January 1955 for the six- week journey to England. Only 15 months before the competition, none of the eventing team – David Wood, Brian Crago, Ernie Barker, Bert Jacobs, John Winchester and Wyatt Thompson – had performed dressage before their selection or had experience in three-day eventing In fact, their only event before the Olympics in Stockholm was to qualify at the prestigious Badminton Horse Trials in England. Finishing fourth in the Olympics was a surprise achievement. “For a country which never before competed in Olympic equestrian events, Australia’s effort was remarkable,” wrote The Daily Telegraph in Sydney. “It will enhance Australia’s reputation for horsemanship throughout the world.” Wyatt (Bunty) Thompson, who grew up in the New South Wales highlands on his family’s sheep and cattle property, later recalled his pride in riding into the stadium in Stockholm as part of that Olympic team.
“I could feel tears of triumph and humility,” he recalls. “I had fought for Australia in the war, and now I was battling again for my country in sport. In all my dreams and ambitions, I had never imagined achieving such a great honour.” During the Rome Olympics, Australia confirmed its reputation as a force to be reckoned with in eventing by winning a gold medal. The team included Lawrence Morgan, Neale Lavis, Bill Roycroft and Brian Crago. During the cross-country event, Roycroft fell and had to be airlifted to hospital, leaving three riders to compete – and Crago’s horse had already been withdrawn from the competition. Against doctor’s orders, 45-year-old Roycroft left the hospital. He competed with one arm in a sling, completed a clear show-jumping round, and helped the team secure gold. He went on to compete in five Olympic Games in all. He also produced 23 Olympic horses and his sons Barry, Wayne and Clarke also became Olympic riders. Bill and Wayne won bronze in 1968 and in 1976, becoming the first father and son team to share the winners’ podium at the same time. Australia continued to enjoy equestrian success and earn medals. The eventing team won bronze in Montreal and gold in Barcelona (1992), Atlanta (1996) and Sydney (2000). Andrew Hoy proved a stalwart of the eventing team, competing in seven Olympic Games in total, the only Australian to do so. He failed to gain selection for Rio, but is making it number eight this year in Tokyo.

EQUESTRIAN AND THE OLYMPICS
“The feeling from each Olympics changes because as you get older you value things more – you value the results, you value the opportunities and you value life more,” he said. “The goal is to be successful and produce a world-class performance.” Women have also been an integral part of Australia’s eventing history. Gillian Rolton was the first woman to win gold, riding Peppermint Grove at the Barcelona Olympics, a feat she repeated again at the next Olympics in Atlanta. In Atlanta, Sonja Johnson overcame significant hurdles to win a silver medal and was listed for the 2000 and 2004 Olympics, but injuries prevented her from competing. The determined Johnson finally made the Olympic opening ceremony in Beijing in 2008. Mary Hanna, set to appear at Tokyo, has appeared in five Olympics Games. Husband-and-wife team Lucinda and Clayton Fredericks have also enjoyed Olympic success. Theywon silver in Beijing and placed sixth in London in 2012. Australian talent was on display in the equestrian arena at 2016’s Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. Scott Keach, who began riding on sheep and cattle farms inWestern Australia and first competed at the Seoul Olympics in 1988, found himself in Rio 28 years later at the age of 51. Edwina Tops-Alexander continues to represent her home country and will be at Tokyo riding in show jumping. She was crowned Australia’s Best Junior at the Australian Young Rider Championships in 1995 and by 2011 was the top- ranked female rider in the world. Tops-Alexander has represented Australia in the Olympics on three occasions: in Beijing in 2008, London in 2012, and Rio de Janeiro in 2016, and she has accumulated two top ten placings from her Olympic appearances. With bronze at Rio for the eventing team comprising of Shane Rose, Stuart Tinney, Sam Griffiths and Chris Burton, we will be hoping for success once again for the sport with such a rich history, and hopefully many more Olympic medals to come.
Racing’s link
The racing and equestrian worlds overlap in many ways.
Shane Rose, part of this year’s eventing team, not only won a silver medal in Beijing in 2008 the brilliant off-the-track thoroughbred All Luck, but is also one of Australian racing’s premier horseman. At Bimbadeen Part he educates young horses, and offers spelling and pre-training, often with great success. Among his students are colts Capitalist and Hellbent, as well as fillies September Run, Funstar and Egg Tart.

Andrew Hoy is also connected to the racing world. Ex-racehorses often factored in his career as a young rider in Queensland, and he won a gold medal at the Barcelona Games in 1992 on the thoroughbred, Kiwi. He has recently worked with Racing Victoria, promoting the transition of retired racehorses into equestrian careers. Stuart Tinney’s greatest success also came aboard a thoroughbred, when he won team gold on Jeepster at the Sydney Olympics in 2000. Historically, thoroughbreds have been an integral part of the Australian Equestrian Team’s success in eventing. Some of the incredible thoroughbreds who have brought home Olympic medals for Australia include Kiwi (Andrew Hoy – Team gold medal, Barcelona 1992), Sunburst (Wendy Schaeffer – Team gold medal, Atlanta 1996), True Blue Girdwood (Phillip Dutton – Team gold medal, Atlanta 1996), House Doctor (Phillip Dutton – Team gold medal, Sydney 2000), Jeepster (Stuart Tinney – Team gold medal, Sydney 2000), and All Luck (Shane Rose – Team silver medal, Beijing 2008). While there are no thoroughbreds on the Australian team for this year’s Olympic Games in Tokyo, there were two shortlisted ahead of the original date last year – Koko Popping Candy (Amanda Ross) and Willingapark Clifford (Hazel Shannon) while Shane Rose’s horse for Tokyo, Virgil, has a thoroughbred dam.

2021 COUNTRY RACING ACHIEVER AWARD
The Australian Trainers’ Association (ATA), Country Racing Victoria and Victoria Racing Club (VRC) are proud to honour our 2021 Country Achiever on VRC Season Premiere Race Day at Flemington today. This award recognises the career and broader industry contribution by a country-based trainer, and includes a named race on today’s card. In addition, the ATA, in conjunction with Racing Supplies, will provide a trophy and a $500 product voucher, which will be presented to the winner in The Committee Room today.
To the award itself, and this year’s recipient is John Ledger.
John spent his early life growing up in Lalor on the outskirts of Melbourne. In the early 1960s, the family relocated to their parents’ original home town of Mulwala. John joined the local pony club where he competed in individual and team events around the countryside, including successful trips to Sydney Royal &Melbourne Shows where he often came away with championship ribbons.
John’s father & brother (George Snr & George Jnr) eventually found their way into racing, setting up their stable in Mulwala & Yarrawonga respectively. John, from age 10, worked at both, then from 12yrs of age, started riding track work at Corowa, the closest racetrack to Mulwala. In his mid 20’s, John established his own pre-training business in Yarrawonga, counting country legends such as Phil & Ken Sweeney, Ollie Cox and Jack & Richard Freyer as clients, before successfully applying for his own trainer license in 1986. After 14 years operating a stable in Yarrawonga, John moved toWangaratta in 2000, and built the current days home and stable complex adjacent the racecourse. John’s good horses include Love and Run, Blaze the Turf, Lago Lad, Soleil & Secret ToyBizness. But his most memorable was Brave Chief, who won 18 races, with son Adrian on board for 7 of those wins. He was Moonee Valley Horse of the Year in 1999, also winning a Sandown Cup. As an educator, John was instrumental mentoring many apprentices, including Kylie Heddle, Brooke & Sally Sweeney, Andrew Stead, Billy Egan, Ben Smith, Adam McCabe, Jackie Tong courtesy of the Hong Kong Jockey Club, and of course, his son, Adrian Ledger. A fixture in the racing industry for over 40 years, John has trained 471 winners across Vic, NSW, SA, WA & Qld. He is credited with a Group 2 and 11 Group 3 race wins, and has earned lifetime prizemoney in excess of $8,000,000.
Well done to John Ledger, a most worthy recipient of the 2021 Country Achiever Award.
