WINTER RACE SERIES
Established by the Victoria Racing Club in 2009, the Winter Race Series brings together races like the Listed VRC-CRV Winter Championship Final (1600m), which had been run since 1979, and a number of other finals for horses young and established, both sprinters and stayers. To qualify for Flemington Finals Race Day on Saturday 1 July, which offers $1.53 million in prizemoney, horses must earn their way into the finals by competing in heats right across Victoria. Horses that finish First and Second in nominated heats will be exempt from the ballot in the respective final. Who will be the next star to emerge?

WINTER RACE SERIES
CRESWICK SPRINT SERIES (New series for 3YO sprinters) This series is aimed at three-year-old sprinters, with heats over distances between 1000m-1200m, conducted at venues including Flemington, Sandown and Caulfield. It is named in honour of Sir Alexander (Alec) Reid Creswick (1912–83), who was a member of the VRC Committee for 24 years, from 1959 until his death in 1983, serving as Chairman 1969–77. His great-great-grandfather Henry Creswick had been a foundation committee member of the Victoria Racing Club in 1864. Sir Alec was a fine horseman himself—Master of the Melbourne Hunt Club, a leading polo player, head of the Equestrian Federation of Australia and a practical supporter of successful Australian participation in successive Olympic Games. He bred and raced many fine racehorses, including champion filly True Course. The final, the $175,000 Listed A.R. Creswick Stakes, is run on Flemington Finals Race Day over 1200 metres, with an honour roll including Nature Strip, Gytrash and Passive Aggressive.
SANTA ANA LANE SPRINT SERIES Formerly the All Victorian Sprinters Series, the series was renamed in honour of five-time Group 1 winning sprinter, Santa Ana Lane, trained by Anthony Freedman. Santa Ana Lane amassed more than $8 million in prizemoney, winning Group 1 races in NSW, SA, QLD and the Group 1 VRC Sprint Classic here at Flemington. Santa Ana Lane was retired a happy and healthy eight-year-old and now
resides at Living Legends, located at Oaklands Junction. This seven-heat series attracts the fastest winter sprinters and features three heats up the famous Flemington straight with heats also conducted at Sandown and Swan Hill, before culminating in the $175,000 Listed Santa Ana Lane Sprint Series Final on
Flemington Finals Race Day. TAJ ROSSI SERIES
This series targets later-developing two-year-olds who are suited to the longer distance of 1600m of the Listed Taj Rossi Series Final and is named after Taj Rossi, the outstanding performer trained by the legendary Bart Cummings. When the son of Matrice was bought by Cummings in 1972 at the Adelaide Yearling Sales for $18,000 (top price) and then sold to prominent owner Victor Peters,
neither could envisage the heights to which Taj Rossi would rise in his short but spectacular career. Beginning his racing as a two-year-old in Adelaide, his first two wins came in moderate company in the winter of 1973 at Flemington. In the spring he ran second at Moonee Valley. Then followed a dazzling sequence in which he won six of his next seven starts including the Ascot Vale Stakes, Moonee Valley Stakes, W.S. Cox Plate, Victoria Derby, George Adams Hcp and Sandown Guineas. Said Bart Cummings: “All along I have said that he is one of the best, if not the best, three-year-old that Australia has known in the last 50 years”. This magnificent group of victories secured for Taj Rossi the award of Racehorse of the Year for the 1973-74 season. Cummings had great respect for Taj Rossi, who was retired to stud as a four-year-old, siring among others, Taj Eclipse, the winner of the 1983 VRC Oaks and yes, owned by Mr and Mrs Victor Peters.

WINTER RACE SERIES
VRC-CRV WINTER CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES This series for open milers takes in heats at Sandown, Swan Hill and Flemington, attracting the most in-form gallopers over distances from 1400m-1600m and bringing them together for the $200,000 Listed VRC-CRV Winter Championship Series Final here on Flemington Finals Race Day. BANJO PATERSON SERIES
This series is for open stayers and is named in honour of revered author and poet Andrew Barton ‘Banjo’ Paterson, who had a lifelong love affair with horses. Polo matches, picnic races and riding his own pony were all part of his early life in country NSW. After moving to Sydney and qualifying as a solicitor, he began submitting poetry to The Bulletin under the pseudonym “The Banjo”, the name of a racehorse his father had owned. His various careers included jockey, horse trainer in the Middle East during WWI and racing journal editor, but it’s his wonderful bush ballads and poems – such as The Man From Snowy River – that truly reflect
his equine passion. In 1886 he published A Dream of the Melbourne Cup ; the first of many racing ballads, including Old Pardon , the Son of Reprieve , The Open Steeplechase , Rio Grande’s Last Race and The Wargilah Handicap . NEXT GENERATION SPRINTER SERIES This series for two-year-olds was introduced to showcase young up-and-coming sprinters and provide an opportunity to gain valuable experience up the unique Flemington straight. The intention is to contribute to the development of the next generation of Australia’s world-class sprinting talents. The series takes in heats at Flemington, Caulfield, Sandown and Mornington, and the $150,000 final is held over the famous Flemington Straight Six course. LEILANI SERIES
This series for fillies and mares is named in honour of Leilani, another Bart Cummings-trained champion who left an indelible print on Australian racing. She won the 1974 AJC Oaks before transforming into a dominant four-year-old race mare, winning the Turnbull Stakes, Toorak Handicap, Caulfield Cup and Mackinnon Stakes in the spring of 1974, before running a gallant second to stablemate Think Big in
the Melbourne Cup. In the ensuing autumn, Leilani won the Orr Stakes, St George Stakes and Australian Cup, among other races. Winning 14 of her 28 starts, Leilani was a horse that Cummings was very fond of; so much so that he named his Sydney stables Leilani Lodge in her honour. Although Cummings was not one to talk much about his horses – especially those in the past as he preferred to look forward – it is well-known that he had huge respect for Leilani, known as a great horse with great fight. Leilani was raced by prominent Melburnians, The Hon Andrew and Mrs Susan Peacock as well as Mr Ian and Mrs Liz Rice. *The Leilani Series, and the former three-year-old fillies series, the Rivette Series, have been combined with heats for fillies and mares to be conducted at Flemington, Sandown and Caulfield.

Introduced in 2019, the Mahogany Challenge was created to showcase developing stayers in Victoria. The series is for three-year-olds and takes in heats at Flemington and Sandown, before culminating in the final on Flemington Finals Race Day. The series is named after the mighty Mahogany, who was raced jointly by Hall of Fame owner Lloyd Williams and businessman Kerry Packer, and trained by the
all-conquering Lee Freedman. He won eight Group 1 races, including both the Victoria Derby and Australian Derby as a three-year-old, and was named the Australian Racehorse of the Year for the 1993-94 season. Known as one of the most versatile gallopers in Australian racing history, Mahogany won four of his eight Group 1s at Flemington, including the Lightning Stakes in 1995 and 1997. GOING AT A Widgee Turf DIFFERENT PACE
By Mick Sharkie
Retirement has never looked better for Group 3 winner Widgee Turf, taken in by legendary horse family the Egans to live out his life in the high country of Victoria. In the Victorian high country, a good horse is worth its weight in gold and always has been. Horses are a part of high-country culture, they are part of everyday life. The landscape is as tough as it is beautiful, steep and unforgiving, hot in the summer and freezing in winter; this is working horse country, and The Man from Snowy River would feel right at home. It’s fitting then that Group 3 winner Widgee Turf has found his way to the high country in retirement. The son of Turffontein was a hard-nosed competitor on the racetrack with a huge will to win – they don’t come much tougher than Widgee Turf. On a farm on the outskirts of Mansfield, the unofficial capital of Victoria’s high country, Widgee Turf and a group of other ex-racehorses are being introduced to a very different pace of life by a family synonymous with racing and with high-country horses. Billy Egan grew up in Mansfield. His father Brendan and mother Sarah always had horses around the place, thoroughbreds, stockhorses, ponies, as did his uncle Gerald, a trainer of racehorses but perhaps better known as a trainer of young jockeys – he was also a stuntman in The Man From Snowy River film.

“I grew up around horses, grew up riding them, it was that sort of lifestyle where horses were just a part of everyday life,” said Egan. Despite the honest nature of working life in the area, there has always been money in Mansfield. The town was a service centre for the surrounding mining outposts during the gold rush and fortunes were made and spent on Mansfield’s streets. Recently the town has boomed again as a gateway to the snowfields of Mt Buller and a weekend escape for well-heeled Melburnians, but horses remain a constant. “People would ride in and go to the pub, do their shopping. There’d be horses tied up in the main street. It doesn’t happen as much these days with a few more cars around but stockmen, cowboys and girls, camp drafters they’re all still around,” said Egan. Egan was always going to be a jockey, there were no two ways about it. He started his career in 2005 and despite some tough times and injuries – the latest in August 2022 when a fall at Pakenham nearly cost him the use of his left arm – he couldn’t imagine another life. Egan was in the saddle when Widgee Turf made a winning debut in a Swan Hill three-year-old maiden in August 2016 and stayed in the saddle for much of the horse’s 42-start career, combining for nine wins, eight on metropolitan tracks, and a Group 1 placing in the 2019 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes. “He was a fierce competitor, he put in 100% every time you went to the races. He was so cruisy and laid back around the stables, but like a great sportsperson, he had that white line fever when you took him to the races,” Egan said.

“That turn of foot was something else. When you let him go he really took off. I can’t really describe what it was like, it felt pretty bloody good when he was at his top.” When trainer Patrick Payne called time on Widgee Turf’s racetrack career with 11 wins from 42 starts and over $1.2 million in the bank, Egan sprang into action. “As soon as he retired, I reached out to his owners Gordon and Marlene McIntosh and asked if I could take him up to the farm and look after him,” said Egan. “Mum and Dad have a great property where we retrain horses for the trails and bush riding. It gives them purpose in their lives. The horses up there are pretty spoilt and well looked after. I wanted a good life for him.” Egan has spent plenty of time with Widgee Turf while he has recovered from his latest fall, a bit of horse therapy helping to keep his mind and body healthy ahead of a return to the saddle. Recently Egan took some racing mates out for a ride, with Lindsay Park’s Will Hayes, jumps jockey Aaron Kuru and his girlfriend Laura Kane and his father Brendan all hitting the trails on retired racehorses that now call the Egan family farm home. Rather than sit around in a paddock eating grass all day, Egan reckons that horses like Widgee Turf are happiest when they are working, when they have something to do. “He just adapted straight away to his new life. He settled in beautifully. Sometimes he gets up alongside one on a trail ride and wants to get up into a canter so that competitive spirit is still there, but you never really lose that do you?” said Egan.

“Thoroughbreds can do anything physically. If they’ve got a tough mindset they’re even better. He’s got the smarts for sure, he’s so adaptable.” “He’ll have a great life up at Mansfield and he deserves it, too.” The career of Widgee Turf is a true racing fairy tale; a $4500 weanling sold through the Inglis Great Southern Sale, the horse then became a cult hero with punters thanks to his will to win and dazzling closing speed, and retired a million-dollar earner, healthy and sound. A horse that gave so many so much joy on the track, it’s only fitting that the Widgee Turf story has a happy ending.

2023 Country Achiever Award WAYNE NICHOLS
By Andrew Nicholl, Chief Executive Officer, Australian Trainers’ Association
The Australian Trainers’ Association (ATA), Country Racing Victoria (CRV) and the Victoria Racing Club (VRC) are proud to honour our 2023 Country Achiever on VRC Country Race Day at Flemington today. This award recognises the career and broader industry contribution by a country-based trainer, and includes a race named in honour of this year’s recipient, Mr Wayne Nichols. In addition, the ATA, in conjunction with Racing Supplies, will provide a trophy and a $500 product voucher, which will be presented to Wayne in The Committee Room today.
Wayne, an only child, was born in 1953, growing up in Dandenong. His early years were completely unrelated to racing, with Wayne concentrating on his sporting passion at the time, water skiing. Between the ages of 16 and 28, Wayne won 10 Victorian state titles, a national title, and represented his country internationally, including at events held in California, New Zealand and London. It was not until Wayne retired from water skiing pursuits that he exhibited an interest in thoroughbreds. At the time, the family was residing on a farm at Bundalong, outside of Yarrawonga, where Wayne’s retired father (Ted) had in 1981, obtained his Owner Trainer license. Wayne obtained a stable hand license, and began to work alongside his father.
22
After two years with his father, Wayne decided thoroughbred training was his calling, and applied for his own trainer license, which was duly granted in August 1983. Wayne amassed a small team of thoroughbreds, and divided his time training between the farm, and Wangaratta racecourse. In 1985, Wayne moved to Benalla, purchasing a farm and stable complex which sat directly opposite the racecourse, before moving his operation to “Spring Lodge” at Goorambat in 1999, where he remains to this day. In his time at Benalla, he boasts four Benalla Trainer premierships, a North East Trainer premiership, and two North East Horse of the Year awards, as some of his more notable achievements. Wayne’s good horses during his career have been many, including Simple As That (15 wins), Destry Girl (11 wins) and Devil May Care (5 wins); these horses winning respectively at Listed and Listed/Group 3 level. But the mantle of ‘No 1’ sits with Diplomatic Force, who raced in Victoria, Queensland and South Australia, placing multiple times at Listed and Group 3 level, winning a Group 2 (Yallambee Stakes) and Group 3 (RN Irwin Stakes), and placing in a Group 1 (The Goodwood). All up, the horse won seven races and placed ten times, earning total prizemoney across his career of $622,000. To this day, the 18-year- old gelding – a homebred which gives Wayne an added sense of achievement – spends his retirement relaxing in Wayne’s lush paddocks at “Spring Lodge”. Over the years, Wayne has been a renowned industry mentor and educator to many, including track riders, several of whom have gone on to train in their own right (Peter Robl, Dwayne Reid & Nathan Newton). His list of indentured apprentices is also extensive; Peter Robl, Travis Creek, Jess Payne, Amanda Masters, Todd Rawiller and Simon Miller. More recently, at the ‘tender’ age of 69, Wayne has taken Hannah Le Blanc under his wing. A fixture in the industry for 39 years, Wayne has trained 277 winners. He is credited with a Group 2 win, two Group 3 wins, two Listed race wins, together with multiple Group and Listed placings. His prizemoney earned across his training career sits just shy of $4 million. From the early years working as a stable hand for his father, to honing his craft firstly at Wangaratta and then Benalla, successfully breeding homebreds and competing with these horses at Group and Listed level around Australia, to educating and mentoring track riders and apprentices, we say congratulations Wayne, you are a most worthy recipient of the 2023 Country Achiever Award.
