PEYTON MANNING’S TIPS FOR SUCCESS 3 Tips for Greatness From a Hall of Famer

“I think you always need to be coached,” said Peyton Manning at a recent event I was lucky enough to attend. He continued, “Whatever level of success anyone in this room has reached, you’re going to hit a plateau. We need a coach to unlock our full potential.” It’s funny that this advice should come from Manning because he was often referred to as a “coach on the field” during his NFL days. He had a preternatural knack for seeing the field and reading the defense, but he was never complacent. Manning knew mastery was an impossibility and, as an old coach told him, “you either get better or worse every day.” Given that he broke nearly every passing record in the book, won two Super Bowls, and was named NFL MVP five times, you’d forgive Manning for resting on his laurels a bit. Of course, that’s not what allowed him to succeed at the level he did. Now that he’s retired from football, Manning has taken to becoming a coach in his own right. He regularly speaks to business leaders about the tactics that cultivated a Hall of Fame legacy during his playing days. I found his perspective, honesty, and insight to be invaluable and want to relay, as best I can, some of the tips he shared. STAY HUMBLE AND KNOW YOUR LIMITATIONS “I believe in mentoring and paying it forward,” Manning said, “but I also believe we shouldn’t think we have it all figured out and that we don’t need to be mentored.” It would’ve been all too easy for Manning to ignore his coaches once he became a perennial Pro Bowler. In fact, many superstar athletes do just that. We’ve all heard stories of hypertalented folks who never reach their full potential because they rely only on themselves. Manning took the opposite approach. Even years into his professional career, he and his brother Eli would spend the off- season with a former coach, David Cutcliffe, who would make

them train the most basic fundamentals, down to taking a snap from center. That may sound crazy, but Manning found it instructive. “Keep being coached,” he told us. “Keep being evaluated.” ADAPT YOUR STRATEGY TO YOUR TEAM MEMBERS As business owners and executives, we function as head coaches and offensive coordinators for our staff. One of the most instructive and eye-opening things Manning mentioned during his talk was about coaches tailoring offensives to his particular assets and limitations. “Design plays your team can do,” he said. “Don’t put them in situations where they’re not going to be really comfortable and not going to be successful.” I think we can all suffer from a tendency to force a top-down approach on our team members without first considering what will work for them. Instead, try to create business practices that accentuate your staff’s strengths and limit the impact of their weaknesses. That’s how you’ll get the highest levels of performance. YOU PLAY LIKE YOU PRACTICE Manning was the type of player who remained unflappable in moments that would send most of us into a panic. He credits this ability to his tendencies during practice. “The biggest mistake people make in that moment,” he said, speaking about the Super Bowl, “is to do something different from what they’ve been doing all season to get them to that point.” We may never face a crowd of thousands screaming at the top of their lungs, but we all face high-pressure situations in our fields. When those moments arise, rely on what you’ve practiced day in and day out to see you through. –Byron Adams

safe to step away for a few minutes. Furthermore, it will let you know how long you have and provide a synopsis of what you missed, meaning you no longer

have to sheepishly ask your fellow moviegoers for a recap. All plot points are hidden, so you’re not in danger of spoiling a scene in the event your urge subsides. Once you begin your break, you’ll be alerted when it’s time to get back to the theater before it’s too late. Every week, RunPee adds information for new releases. They also include other helpful information about the film, like whether you should consider staying beyond the end credits. You can also set it up to alert you for a recommended pee or an emergency pee depending on how you’re feeling. It will even tell you when a break is coming up in the event the movie is crowded and you need to plan your exit route. It won’t, however, keep fellow attendees from asking you to move out of their way. Technology has not yet figured out how to make Mother Nature act on command. For the time being, RunPee is the next best thing. Now, your bathroom break can provide relief without adding anxiety about what’s going on with the Avengers while you’re away. We’ve all been in that situation. You’re at the theater, glued to the screen, and unexpectedly need to pee. With the new app RunPee, that guessing game is a thing of the past. RunPee, as its name suggests, is an app that will tell you the optimal time to relieve yourself during a movie. LIZ FOSSLIEN & MOLLIE WEST DUFFY’S ‘NO HARD FEELINGS’ A Guide to Accepting Emotions in the Workplace The Arccos Sensor comes with a companion app that contains yardage and layout data for over 40,000 courses, so you’ll know exactly how far you have to the pin without counting off steps from the nearest yard marker. The more you use it, the more data you’ll have to improve your game and lower your scores. There’s not a golfer in the world who wouldn’t want that. ANALYTICS TO IMPROVE YOUR GOLF GAME When you watch a PGA tournament, you see countless shots of the pros conversing with their caddies. Every weekend golfer wishes they could rely on the advice of such a trusted confidant, but that’s just not realistic. However, there is a product on the market that allows you to gain the insights a caddie would provide. These insights come from the Arccos Caddie Smart Sensor, winner of Golf Digest’s Best Game Analyzer award for three consecutive years. The sensors, which are approved by the USGA Rules of Golf, are placed in the grips of each of your clubs. As you use them, they gather information about your shot performance to recommend the precisely correct club for every situation. In the past few years, Fast Company has given world- renowned brands the honor of “The World’s Most Innovative Company.” Nobody is surprised to see names like Amazon, Apple, and Buzzfeed topping the list. This year, however, the magazine decided to honor a company that most Americans have never heard of: Meituan-Dianping. What’s behind the surprise selection? An emerging tech giant poised to revolutionize the way people find services online. Fast Company describes Meituan-Dianping as “a Chinese company that aspires to be the Amazon of services.” In America, we are used to dealing with specialized service providers online. We use one app for finding airfare, another for booking hotels, and so on. Companies like Uber and Airbnb are even beginning to expand their services into secondary sectors, but we still have nothing like Meituan- Dianping. Think of them as a massive network connecting consumers and local businesses. The technical term for this type of service is transactional super app, and Meituan- Dianping is one on a grand scale. They generated more than $33 billion dollars in transactions in the first half of 2018 alone. Meituan-Dianping’s bread and butter, ironically, is food delivery. But they also offer a suite of what they call “low- frequency offerings,” such as massages, haircuts, movie tickets, and hotel bookings. The idea is that as users come to rely on Meituan-Dianping for food delivery, they are more likely to use them when in need of other services, as well. Eventually, the idea is that a user will be able to book almost any service they can think of on the platform, hence the Amazon comparison. Of course, providing a robust suite of services provides the company with a truckload of data to help optimize their platform for efficiency and user satisfaction. This data also helps businesses learn about their customers, creating a mutually beneficial relationship with the platform. Provided that the company can keep users ordering and businesses from choosing competitors, Meituan-Dianping could scale to unfathomable heights. A Chinese Tech Giant Revolutionizing Service Platforms HAVE YOU HEARD OF MEITUAN-DIANPING?

We’ve all heard the clichés that tell us business isn’t personal. What a load of junk! We spend roughly half of our waking lives at work, so how could it not be personal and emotional? For far too long, we’ve sought to minimize the impact of our personal perspectives in the workplace, pretending we can operate like autonomous robots. The new book from Liz Fosslien and Mollie West Duffy, “No Hard Feelings: The Secret Power of Embracing Emotions at Work,” puts the sword to this outdated principle once and for all.

From their experience in the workplace, the authors have learned this: “Treating on-the-job feelings as enemies that need to be wrangled into submission” is a fool’s errand. Our lives, they note, are more entwined with our careers than ever before. It’s only natural, then, that we’d feel strongly and passionately about our work. The question isn’t whether or not we should have emotions at work; it’s how can we effectively channel them into productive communication and meaningful collaboration. To help answer that question, Duffy and Fosslien take readers through seven “new rules of emotion at work” and how they relate to topics like health, motivation, culture, leadership, and more. After reading “No Hard Feelings,” you’ll realize that when harnessed correctly, taking business personally can be a very good thing indeed.

bow by being tied down. In Reba’s case, her treatment led to leg injuries and mental issues. Eventually, she became aggressive and attacked her circus handlers. In turn, the circus decided to donate her to the Phoenix Zoo. When Reba arrived, she was still deeply affected by the trauma she underwent. Over the course of five long years, though, Reba began to acclimate to her new surroundings. Through the positive reinforcement and encouragement provided to her by trainers, she began to feel comfortable around people. Now, she’s healthy and happy. At our company, one of our core values is: “We Care About the One.” To us, this means that no matter who you’re speaking with, meet them on their own terms, empathize with them, and provide whatever help you can. Somebody could be having the worst day in the world, but making an attempt to understand what they’re going through is always going to work better than indifference or contempt. The best route to a resolution is always through lending a hand, never cracking a whip. WHY KINDNESS STOMPS ON MALICE By Shannon

Before I worked at AZCOMP, I was a zookeeper for a number of years. During that time, I had the privilege of working with more species of animals than most people can name. Each of these animals inspired and encouraged me in their own way. Just like people, every animal at the zoo comes from a different background. Many of them arrived to us with scars, both those you see and those you can’t. Whatever their previous histories, I found that showing kindness could mend fences and build bridges. No matter who or what we are dealing with, showing compassion and empathy is always the best route to understanding. Perhaps no story from my time at the zoo illustrates this more than my experience with Reba the elephant. Reba came to us from the circus, where she was mistreated and abused. The way some circuses train elephants is extremely cruel, often involving plenty of punishment. From their earliest days, elephants are taught to
