To engage some audiences, it is necessary to do so on their own turf as part of a broader programme of local celebration.

How Maximise the audience

Providing opportunities for communities to get involved at ‘home’ within their communities, and ‘away’ at the event itself, is a very effective way of maximising engagement and social impacts. Reframing and collaboration with community influencers can be used to co- create opportunities that appeal to a much wider audience than those who usually travel and pay to attend an event. These opportunities can also be used to facilitate community engagement in associated activities before, during and long after the event. Other opportunities include running tailored activation tasters , fundraising competitions prior to the event, or organising watch parties on the day and fan zones so that communities can see the action on an outdoor big screen or inside a local venue even if they cannot attend. Work with community influencers to identify ways of encouraging more people from the community to travel to away events. Making attendance social and part of an affordable community ‘day out’ can be a big incentive. Providing support with transport to get to the event and extending local VIP treatment and perks on arrival also enhances the welcome. Recruiting and Incentivising Volunteers to participate in the event will also increase engagement alongside engaging with local businesses, schools, clubs and venues to help Keep it Local .
